I FULLY thought that the storm would be on my side, that it would keep everyone locked away in the house and I'd be able to have Tate all to myself.
But I was wrong; very wrong for that matter.
"And you just aim for the striped ball." Luca stood, watching my girl intently as she leaned over the pool table.
Tate shot me a wearily glance, like she could feel the jealousy radiating off of me.
Luca had been attempting to teach her pool, since there was nothing else we could do. Either that or mini sticks; neither of which Tate liked.
Tate smiled once she got her ball in, wiping her hands on her sweater. "That wasn't so hard. Now what?"
"You still have to get the rest of yours in." I informed her, before Luca could. "And you have to do it before he gets all his in."
Luca shifted awkwardly as I took his thunder. "Yeah, thanks, Quinn. It's really not that hard, I'll go easy on you."
Tate forced herself to look away from me, shooting the boy a short nod as she continued to play the game. Luca did in fact go easy on her, too easy. She won easily.
The lights began to flicker, a sharp lightning strike passing in the sky as our house shook. Tate; who's been scared of storms since she was a kid, jumped.
"We're definitely loosing power." Jack groaned, playing with the TV remote as a comedy film was on.
Like a manifestation, the lights turned off, leaving all of us in the pitch black living room.
"Called it." Jack now stared at the black TV screen. "Quinn, you're the only one who knows how to run the circuit breaker."
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, I'll go check it out. Tate would you grab me a flashlight?"
Tate used her phone flashlight as she grabbed the bulky handheld one, handing it over to me as I tilted my head towards the basement steps, urging for her to join me.
She complied, following close behind me as even the dark had been one of her fears.
"Scared, Quinn?" She hummed as we descended down the basement steps. "Needed me to come with you, huh?"
"I think you're the one that's scared, Tate." I snickered, her front pressed into my back. "I do believe in personal space you know."
She pinched me, earning a hiss from me. I turned to face her, stepping towards her until her back met the wall beside the breaker.
Tate sucked in a breath as she was trapped, the flashlight illuminating our faces as I clutched it tightly.
"Is that what you want?" She darted her tongue out to sweep across her plump bottom lip. I never wanted to kiss someone so bad. "Personal space?"
I ran my finger over her jaw, watching her shudder from the light touch. "From everyone else, maybe. But not from you."
She smiled, biting into her bottom lip. "Guess I make a pretty good pool player, right?"
"I think I would've been a much better teacher." I argued, shrugging. "His tactics are a bit weak."
She rolled her dark eyes, shaking her head at me. "Maybe. Didn't matter, I wasn't really paying attention to him."
"Really?" I cocked a brow. "Then, what captured your attention, T?"
"You." She muttered, her gaze flickering between my eyes as I closed the gap between us, lips hovering over one another's. "Just you."
I kissed her, hard. It was a feeling I never wanted to forget, a feeling I never wanted to loose. Kissing Tate felt like getting air pumped into my lungs.
She wrapped a leg around my waist, somehow pulling us closer.
"Quinn!" Jacks voice echoed over the walls.
Tate used her palm to push me off, I stepped back from her, staring at the light from the staircase just around the corner.
"Yeah, man?" I shouted back, trying to keep my composure as Tate paled.
"What's taking so long?" Jack had always been the impatient one. "Luke has already fallen over four times."
"Just took me a minute to find the right switch." I focused on the true reason I came down here; getting the power back on.
In a second, the lights switched back on, bringing power to the rest of our lake house.
"All done." Tate nodded, still recovering from our heated kiss as I shut off the bright flashlight. "Nice job."
I chuckled, seeing how flushed she was. "Looking a little spooked there, Tate."
"I don't know how you aren't." She gritted. "We're lucky he didn't walk down here, Quinn. That was close."
She had a point. I know she did. "At least it wouldn't have been Luke."
She narrowed her eyes at me in a scolding manner. I put my hands up in defense, trying to calm her down. "We might loose power again tonight."
"Is this you asking me to come with you if it goes out again?" Tate fought her grin.
"No, actually." I scrunched my nose slightly. "I know how much you hate the dark, so, just keep your night light on."
Tate parted her lips, her look getting annoyed as she shoved at me. "Quinn, you're such a jerk. You're the one who bought it for me in the first place."
"Why can't you sleep?" I asked, watching Tate bring her knees to her chest as she sat on the living room couch. It was getting late and she still hadn't budged, despite the whole house going to sleep.
"No reason." She lied, her eyes widening slightly as I tried to get a read on her.
I sat beside her, crossing my arms over my chest as she shot me a questioning look. "I'm not leaving till you tell me. May I remind you I have practice in the morning so I'd really appreciate it if you let me go to bed."
She knew my stubborn ways and she also knew I'd get it out of her. No matter what it took.
"It's embarrassing, Quinn." She shook her head, looking down at her hands. "I don't want to tell you."
"Oh, come on." I nudged her, letting my curiosity lead the conversation. "I promise I won't judge. It's a judge-free zone."
Tate tucked her hair behind her ears, still looking anywhere but me. "I'm scared of the dark, Quinn. The room...it has no light. I'm scared to sleep in there."
My lips quirked slightly as I stared at her. And in an odd way, it made my stomach turn to think of her scared.
I slept on the couch with her that night, leaving the floor lamp on.
"What is it?" Tate glanced down at the bag I had slid to her.
"Yesterday you told me you were scared of the dark." I shrugged. "And I know for a fact that couch is uncomfortable. You can't sleep there for months, Tate."
Tate unwrapped the small gift, her face lighting up as she stared at the small owl shaped night light. "Quinn."
"Do you like it?" I shifted, trying to see her reaction.
"It's the nicest thing someone's ever done for me." She smiled gratefully. "I love it, Quinn. Thank you."
"Yeah, you're welcome." I rolled my eyes, pecking her lips once more. "Little owl kept you company."
Need a love like this.
