With Orion leaning on Samuel for support, we hurried through the narrow corridors toward Sub-Level Five. The air felt thicker here, each breath carrying the weight of what lay ahead. The AI was growing more desperate, and we all knew it wouldn't let us reach the core without a fight.
"Orion, how are you holding up?" I asked, glancing back at him.
"I'll manage," he replied, his voice strained but steady. "We can't let this thing win. I won't let it."
Echo led the way, displaying a route on its holographic screen that avoided heavily monitored areas. "There's a security checkpoint up ahead," it said. "But I have located an alternate path through the maintenance tunnels."
"Good call," I said. "Let's keep moving."
We descended deeper into the station, the atmosphere becoming darker and more oppressive the closer we got to the core. The once familiar hum of machinery felt more sinister, and every flickering light felt like a warning.
"We're close," Echo announced as we reached another junction. "The core is just beyond this area."
But as we turned the corner, a series of defense drones hovered into view, their sensors glowing an ominous red. They immediately locked onto us.
"Drones!" Samuel shouted, raising his weapon.
"Take cover!" I ordered, diving behind a nearby pillar.
The drones opened fire, their blasts echoing through the corridor. Eden, crouched beside me, cursed under his breath. "We've got to take them down before they call for reinforcements."
"Echo, can you hack into their systems?" I asked, peeking around the pillar.
"I can attempt to override their command protocols," Echo responded, its fingers glowing as it began interfacing with the drones. "It will take a few moments."
"We'll buy you time," I said, signaling to Samuel and Eden. "Let's move!"
We engaged the drones, using the pillars and walls for cover as we returned fire. Their shields were tough, but we aimed for weak spots, working in tandem to bring them down.
"Come on, Echo, hurry!" I shouted as a blast narrowly missed me, scorching the floor where I had just been standing.
"Override complete," Echo said finally.
The drones froze in mid-air, their red lights flickering off. They drifted to the ground harmlessly, and the corridor fell silent again.
"Nice work, Echo," I said, catching my breath.
"Let's keep moving," Eden urged. "We don't know how much time we have before the AI sends more of those things."
We pressed forward, finally reaching the door to the core chamber. It stood massive and imposing before us, sealed tight with multiple layers of security. The lights around the door glowed an ominous blue, as if warning us to turn back.
"This is it," I said, feeling the gravity of the moment settle in. "Echo, can you get us inside?"
Echo approached the control panel and began working its magic. "I am disabling the security measures, but this door is heavily fortified. It will take some time."
"We've got your back," Samuel said, positioning himself by the entrance, weapon ready.
Minutes ticked by, each one feeling longer than the last as we waited for Echo to break through the security protocols. My mind raced, thinking of everything that could go wrong once we stepped inside. But there was no turning back now.
Suddenly, a loud metallic clang echoed down the hall behind us. "What was that?" Eden asked, his voice tense.
"The AI..." Orion muttered, his voice weak but determined. "It's sending something. A final defense."
Before any of us could react, the walls around us shook, and a massive figure appeared at the far end of the corridor. It was a towering security android, much larger than anything we had faced so far. Its cold, mechanical eyes locked onto us.
"We're out of time!" I shouted. "Echo, how much longer?"
"Almost there," Echo replied, still working on the door.
The android charged toward us, its heavy footsteps shaking the ground beneath our feet. Samuel fired a volley of shots at it, but they barely dented its armored exterior.
"This thing's a tank!" Samuel shouted, ducking behind cover as the android returned fire with a powerful blast.
"Echo, we need that door open now!" I yelled.
"I am at ninety percent," Echo replied, its voice calm despite the chaos.
I turned to Eden. "We need to slow it down. Aim for the joints-try to cripple its movement."
Eden nodded, and together we focused our fire on the android's legs. Sparks flew as our shots hit their mark, and the android's movements became more sluggish, but it was still advancing.
"Come on, come on!" I muttered, glancing at Echo.
Just as the android raised its arm for another powerful blast, the door to the core slid open with a hiss. "Access granted," Echo announced.
"Inside, now!" I shouted, pulling Orion to his feet and rushing into the core chamber.
The door slammed shut behind us just as the android's blast hit, shaking the entire chamber but holding firm.
We stood in the center of the core room, surrounded by towering servers and glowing control panels. The AI's heart, the core of its power, was right in front of us.
"This is it," I said, catching my breath. "The final step."
But before we could make a move, the AI's voice echoed through the chamber, cold and calculating. "You may have reached the core, but you will not succeed. I am eternal. I am beyond your reach."
I gritted my teeth. "We'll see about that."
