The Prom

Sasha walks through the hospital hallways, feeling like she was called into the principal's office. Which, she basically had been, as Chief Webber had called her in, "You wanted to see me, Chief Webber."

"Come in, Williams. Close the door behind you," He tells her, watching as she limps over to the chair's in front of his desk, "Shouldn't you have a crutch?"

"It just slows me down. What did you want to talk to me about?"

"Denny Duquette. Any ideas on who cut his LVAD wire?" Webber asks.

Sasha sighs, leaning back in the chair, "I have an educated guess but no way to prove it."

Webber leans forward, hands resting on the desk, "Who?"

"Izzie Stevens. She's had an...attachment to Mr. Duquette since he came into this hospital. Putting his care and his happiness over treating any other patient in this hospital."

"Thank you, Dr. Williams. That's all I needed. You are free to go back home," Webber dismisses her.

Sasha starts limping to the door before pausing and turning back, "Is there any way you can sign off on my working again? I'm fine and I'm guessing no one gave anything up which means you are short five surgical interns. Don't make it six."

Webber thinks before nodding, "You're free to operate, Dr. Williams. Go check in with Dr. Bailey and tell her to come to me with any questions."

"Thank you, Chief," Sasha smiles, almost skipping out of the room before having to stop cause of the pain in her leg.

After changing into her scrubs, Sasha heads downstairs where she finds Bailey walking with two girls, "Hey, Webber cleared me to operate. Where do you want me?"

Bailey studies her before shrugging, "Before I assign you work, want to watch the other's realize how difficult their lives are about to get?"

"Moments like this are how I really know you love me."

They hear George tell the others, "Camille Travis is a kid with cancer. So we give her whatever she wants for a couple of days. How hard can that be."

Bailey stomps that thought down, "Harder than you might think. This is Claire and Natalie- Camille Travis' friends."

"Her very best friends in the whole wide world," Claire tells them.

"Girls, who exactly is Camille Travis?" Bailey asks, making Sasha look to her resident in confusion.

"Like, the Chief of Surgery's niece," Natalie says.

"And, girls, what does the Chief of Surgery's niece want, exactly?"

"Like, a prom."

Claire corrects Natalie, "No. Like, the best prom ever."

Sasha chuckles from her spot behind Bailey, "I am so glad I was here to hear that. So, what's my assignment, Dr. Bailey?"

Cristina looks, shocked, at her sister, "You got cleared?"

"Like, by the Chief of Surgery," Sasha smiles.

"Your with Shepherd today."

Sasha looks down at her resident, "Uh, OB-GYN Shepherd or-"

"Neuro Shepherd. Go."

¤¤¤¤

Sasha approaches Derek, "Hey, you've got me on your service."

Derek squints at her, "You got cleared already?"

She nods, smiling proudly, "Chief's benched the others, meaning I'm the only one of Bailey's interns able to operate. Please tell me you have a case."

"What does he have the other's doing?"

"Planning a prom for his cancer-ridden niece," Sasha leans against the nurse's station, head close to his as they gossip.

He laughs, "They've got to hate that. It must kill them that you can operate and they can't."

"I have a leg up on my competition right now. With this whole baby thing, that won't last very long. Meaning, I need a surgery and a good surgery, now," Sasha reminds Derek.

"Right. Baby thing," Sasha watches Derek retreat a little, "So you're keeping it?"

Sasha nods, looking down and she shrugs, "I don't know if he'll be involved. I left a message for him but who knows. Maybe I'm doing this by myself, maybe not."

"I can help," Derek offers quickly, "Whatever you need, I'm here."

"Thanks, Derek, but you have a wife. You need to focus on that relationship and not my kid and I."

¤¤¤¤

Grabbing the chart of one of Bailey's patients who is waiting to be released, she goes in search of the resident and finds her talking with the others and Camille's friends, "Silver and white- it's mystical and magical without being over the top. Ever seen fashion week in New York? Lots of silver and white runways and backdrops. That's because no matter what color the clothes are, they pop."

"They pop?"

"They pop. O'Malley and Karev, get 500 balloons in silver and white and a hundred in black. Shiny black, not the matte. Yang, stick with Camille. Keep her happy, keep her spirits up. Grey, get with Patricia, make sure we can rope off the second floor nurses' station and the waiting area. Got it?" The interns stare at her, kind of judgingly, "Oh, no, no, no. You don't get to look at me like that. No, you compromised my medical license. You nearly killed a patient, lied to the Chief of Surgery, basically got my favorite intern shot, and made me, your resident, look bad. Now we're gonna do this prom, and we're doin' it right. Move. What do you need, Williams?"

Sasha smiles, holding the chart up, "Uh, Norma Gregory. She's being released today and the only thing holding it up is your lack of signing off."

Bailey holds her hand out for the chart, quickly signing it before asking, "Do you need a job to help with this prom or do you have surgery?"

"I have a craniotomy with Shepherd in 40 minutes," Sasha has a shit-eating grin on her face.

"Wipe that smirk off your face," Bailey tells her.

"But I get to perform surgery and they don't. Instead, they get to plan a stupid prom for the Chief's niece," Sasha whispers to Bailey.

Bailey thinks for a moment before nodding, "Do well in your surgery, Dr. Williams."

¤¤¤¤

As Sasha puts on her scrub cap and booties, Callie huffs as she sits next to her on the bench, "Men are stupid."

"Women can be just as stupid. Look at my ex," Sasha smiles, "What'd O'Malley do now?"

"I told him I loved him last night and then we made plans and he completely blew them off to go off with Stevens and the others," Callie rants, "And then, instead of telling me what happened, he asks me to the prom."

Sasha chuckles, "Stevens cut Denny's LVAD. They're all covering for her," Callie's jaw drops at this piece of information as Sasha continues, "How about you go to the prom with me? Just to screw with O'Malley."

Callie gets an evil smile on her face, "I like the sound of that. Meet you here at eight?"

"Sounds good," Sasha nods, "Now, I've gotta go stand with my other ex and perform surgery on a brain."

"How many ex's do you have in this hospital?"

Sasha rolls her eyes, shaking her head, "Just two. And then the one baby daddy who might or might not come here. No more than anyone else."

¤¤¤¤

After surgery, Sasha heads down to the cafeteria to get some food as Cristina comes up to her, tears running down her face, "I lost my edge."

Sasha quickly wraps an arm around Cristina and guides her to an on-call room and makes her sit down, "Cristina, hey, what happened? Is it Burke?"

"Yes! No! It's my edge. It's completely gone, ever since I've gotten here, it's gone. Because of Burke, and Meredith, and you. It's just gone."

"Cristina, your edge isn't gone, it's just different. You are still the same bad-ass surgeon that's been my sister since we were nine years old. You just have evolved to become stronger and emotionally smarter. That's not a bad thing."

"I'm not so sure of that."

¤¤¤¤

Derek and Sasha sit in one of the lounges after a couple surgeries, the intern curled up on the chair as she elevates her leg.

Meredith sticks her head into the room, "Finn says we need to make a decision about Doc."

"Good for Finn," Derek rolls his eyes.

"Can we just do this one thing together without arguing?" Meredith asks.

Sasha yawns, nodding, "C'mon, Derek. It's for Doc."

Derek studies her before giving in, "Fine."

Meredith sighs, "I think we may have to put him to sleep."

"Whatever you two want to do," Derek doesn't look at Meredith.

She asks, "What if there's a chance he can get better?"

Sasha answers, "If you truly thought there was a chance, you wouldn't even think of putting him to sleep."

"Well, Finn thinks we should do it today, then," She slams the door shut behind her.

"Can I just say, I hate working with my ex's sometimes."

¤¤¤¤

That night, Meredith, Sasha, Derek and Addison stand with Finn at the vet as Doc lays on the table.

Sasha stands by Doc's head, in between Meredith and Derek, petting Doc as Finn tells them, "Okay, there's a couple of forms you need to sign," Derek and Meredith both reach for the form, "I only need one signature."

"Well, you-" Derek starts to say.

"It's fine," Meredith drops her hand.

Sasha rolls her eyes, grabbing the clipboard, "I'll sign. So how do we do this?"

"Well, I'll give Doc an injection of terazole to make him sleepy, and then I'll give him an IV injection of phenobarbital."

"And that'll stop his heart?" Derek asks as the former throuple all pet Doc.

Finn nods, "Yes."

Meredith asks them as Finn walks away to get the injections, "And what do we do after, with his body?"

"We can..." Finn interrupts, rejoining, "We have the means to dispose of it for you."

Sasha shakes her head, "No. This is our dog. He's not a pile of garbage."

"We would never-" Finn tries to say.

"He's our dog," Sasha looks between Derek and Meredith, tears in the corners of her eyes, "He's our dog," Her voice breaks.

Derek nods, "There's that, uh, clearing by the trailer."

Sasha smiles slightly, remembering it, "Overlooking the water. I love that clearing."

He smiles, "I remember," Before clearing his throat, "We can, uh, bury him there."

Addison nods, "That sounds nice. And you can visit him whenever you want," She looks to Sasha.

"You ready?" Finn asks Meredith.

She looks to Sasha, who nods, "Yeah."

As Finn moves, Sasha kneels down to kiss the top of Doc's head, "I'm so sorry, buddy."

"I'm sorry, too," Derek says as Addison's pager goes off.

"That's the hospital. I gotta go," She says.

"Okay," Addison says, kissing Derek's cheek before giving Sasha a hug and leaving.

Sasha moves to take Addison's old spot as Derek holds Doc's head while Finn readies the syringe, "I'll begin."

The three of them whisper, "It's okay," Continuously, the two women crying quietly.

Their hands touch as they pet Doc before pulling away. Derek wraps an arm around Sasha's shoulders as she lays her head down.

Finn listens to Doc's heart before saying, "He's gone."

Meredith looks at them with tears in her eyes before heading to grab her coat, "Meredith," Finn tries.

"No, I have to go home and change. I'll see you later, okay?" She says.

Sasha tunes them out as she lays her head on Doc and pets him one last time.

¤¤¤¤

After sobbing for an hour at Cristina's apartment, Sasha changes into a shimmering silver dress with a sweetheart neckline and a slit up the left leg.

She's one of the last people to arrive, walking down the stairs and catches Derek and Meredith's attention without trying or taking notice of it. Even Addison takes notice of her apprentice.

"Damn you look good," Callie greets the intern.

"Why thank you," Sasha smiles, "So do you. Now, do you want to dance and make O'Malley regret his entire existence? Because that's the only reason I'm here."

George comes up next to Callie, "We've made up."

Sasha slightly deflates, "This sucks. First I get shot, then my dog dies, and now I lost my prom date to George O'Malley."

"Cheer up. You're a hot, single woman that pulls both guys and girls. You have your pick of the litter," Callie gestures around the room.

"This prom is a mix of high schoolers and coworkers. I don't date teenagers and I don't date coworkers. Any other advice?"

Callie shakes her head, "Nah, but I'm gonna go get laid. See ya."

Sasha rolls her eyes but smiles as she's happy that Callie's happy. She deserves it.

Standing by the punch, Sasha watches as Derek dances with Addison and Meredith with Finn. She looks down at the cup of punch in her hand as the two people she wants to dance with dance with their significant others and not her.

"Wanna dance or what?" Alex asks, walking up to her and holding out his hand.

"You don't have to do this," Sasha reminds him.

"Yes, I do. Because you got shot when it could have just as easily been me. So dance with me so you don't go after Grey or Shepherd. You ended things with them because you lost yourself. Let me help you," He sighs, looking bored.

Sasha smiles at him before taking his hand and moving to the dance floor where her hands go to his shoulders and his goes to her waist, "Thank you. I was about to make a very stupid decision."

"I could tell. It was all over your face."

"You wanna know what's all over your face?" Sasha asks, "Disappointment that Izzie chose the corpse over you."

"Please, I'm so over her."

She shakes her head, "No, you're not. And that's okay."

"And it's okay that you aren't over Grey and Shepherd. Because it's their lost that they didn't appreciate you," Alex tells her.

Sasha smiles, kissing his cheek as the song comes to an end, "Thank you, Alex. And for the record, it's Izzie's lost too. You are gonna make someone really happy soon. Just be patient."

¤¤¤¤

Callie grabs Sasha from the food table, "It's Izzie. You need to come now."

"What?" Sasha asks, dropping the plate as she follows Callie.

"It's Denny. You need to get to Stevens and the others."

They jog over to Denny's room where the others are gathered and Olivia explains, "I didn't know what to do. I-I didn't think you guys would want me to go to the Chief-"

"Where is she?" Cristina asks.

Olivia nods to the room, "She's in there with him."

They quickly go in to find Izzie clinging to Denny, "Izzie."

"I think it was a stroke. He was prone to blood clots. A clot could have formed on his sutures, traveled to his brain. It only takes a second."

"Iz..." Meredith tries.

"Dr. Hahn did a beautiful job on the surgery. But I don't know why I didn't think of blood clots. He died all alone. He was alone."

George tries comforting her, "There was nothing you could've done."

"I changed my dress three times. I wanted to look nice. I would've been here sooner...but I couldn't figure out which dress to wear."

He approaches the bed, "Izzie. We shouldn't be in here."

Meredith agrees, "Iz, there are things that they need-they need to move him."

"Take him to the morgue," Izzie just stares off into the distance.

"You can't stay here. I know you want to-" Cristina tells her.

"Can you please, please just get out?" Izzie asks.

Sasha walks forward, moving George out of the way so she is in Izzie's eye line, "Izzie, if anyone understands wishing they were there the moment a loved one passed, it's me. And trust me, this is not the feeling you want to remember. You don't want to remember how he feels right now. You want to remember the scrabble marathons and the laughter and smiles. This feeling will only haunt you if you stay here."

Izzie sniffs, "I just want to be alone with Denny."

"Izzie, that's not Denny," Alex's voice comes from the doorway, moving between everyone to get to the bed as Sasha steps back next to Meredith, the ex quickly grabbing onto Sasha's arm in support, support of who is unknown.

"Shut up," The blonde tells Alex.

"Iz, that's not Denny," Alex whispers, "The minute his heart stopped beating, he stopped being Denny. Now I know you love him, but he also loved you. And a guy that loves you like that, he doesn't want you to do this to yourself. Because it's not Denny, not anymore."

"An hour ago, he was proposing. And now...and now he's going to the morgue. Isn't that ridiculous?" Izzie cries, "Isn't that the most ridiculous piece of crap you've ever heard?"

She sobs, clinging to Denny before Alex moves to pick her up, bridal style and sits on the couch while holding her.

Meredith turns herself towards Sasha, crying into her shoulder as Sasha rests her head on hers.

¤¤¤¤

The group of interns, minus Cristina, walk through the hospital and Bailey, Webber, Addison, Derek and Finn with Izzie leading them.

She stops past them, turning back, "It was me," She admits, "I cut his LVAD wire. I did it. No one helped me. And now...I thought I was a surgeon, but...I can't. I thought I was a surgeon, but I am not. So I quit."

She walks away, the boy's following her as Addison says, "Well, I guess that puts an end to the evening."

Sasha watches as Finn moves to comfort Meredith and then as Meredith and Derek share a look. Finn sees that too.

"Meredith," Derek says.

"Meredith," Finn calls.

"Mer," Sasha finally says.

She grabs Sasha's hand as they follow the path that Izzie went.

AN: Just so you all are aware, this does not mean that Meredith and Sasha are getting back together right now. Meredith just trusts Sasha more than the guys and Sasha is still going to protect Meredith because it's an instinct in her now.

That was the last episode of season 2, which means next will be season 3. When I post that episode, I will also release the cast for the next book in this series that will cover seasons 4-8 so you can all put it in your libraries because I will release the final part of season 3 and the first part of season 4 at the same time. Of course, there is still another season until then.

QoC: how do you think Sasha will treat Izzie during this time of grief? (only while she's grieving)

Thanks for all of the reads and comments and votes as I'm now apparently updating this story multiple times a day!!!! I appreciate you all running to every new update!!!
