Reader POV

After the funeral for Roman, life somewhat went back to normal. I went back to my life as Chloe Deveraux, the nobody barista from the French countryside.

The pain of Roman's death never left, and I decided that my final kill as Huntington Caspiro would be Roman's killer. During the day I made lattes, and at night I played detective, trying my hardest to track down her killer.

During the five months that I had been here, I had received many suitors, including  Raphael Laurent, the son of my hosts and fiancée of my best friend, Francesca.

I was extremely pissed at his infidelity, but I couldn't do anything but reject him.

1. I couldn't let on that I knew about his engagement, or anything else about his life.

2. Mafia affairs were so common that there was no point in saying anything.

So I grit my teeth, kept my mouth shut, and kindly declined his advances.

Besides, he may have had some sort of feelings for me, but someone else had caught my eye.

Of course, she was someone I was definitely familiar with, but had never met before in my life. Her name was Alison Ramírez, the daughter of Rodrick and Elena Ramírez. She had come to visit the Laurents, but I had quickly offered her a room in my house, as quite frankly, I was lonely and appreciated the company.

But our innocent friendship became something else the more time we spent together.

I knew the two of us would never work out. After all, Alison was a mafia child. She was raised to kill and lead organized crime, marrying the man of her parents choice, leaving her no room to be with the person of her choice.

After about four months into our relationship, Alison told me everything. About her parents, her real job, why she was in France, and the biggest kicker of all, her fiancée, a man I knew very, very well by the name Semi Eita.

The Semi Family was a lower level crime family that still held a lot of influence in the Underworld. They did a lot of dirty work for multiple mafia's, and they especially had strong ties to the American mafia, especially the Bennett Crime Family.

It was no surprise that they were trying to marry off their son to the Ramírezes, after all, there had been tension between their families in the past, and the marriage was most likely a peace deal between the two.

Our relationship remained a secret from everybody, especially the Laurents. There was no telling what they would do and who they would tell. It was too risky.

Until the day came. Alison burst into the house, screaming my name, a huge smile on her face.

I ran to her, mildly panicking, begging her to calm down and explain what was happening. She took a deep breath before telling me everything.

"Chloe , baby! I told Semi about us!"

I stood up, instinctively taking a few steps away.

"Alison, what did you do? Why would you tell him? He'll kill us!"

She walked over to me and grabbed my hand.

"He won't! I swear. When I told him about you, all he said was that he didn't care who I saw, we just needed to create a couple of heirs!"

I yanked my hands away from her, a horrified expression on my face.

"Goddammit, Ali! If you are gay and in organized crime, they'll kill you! And besides, what about the system? There is no way this would work!"

Alison eyed me warily.

"How do you know so much about organized crime? And how do you know about the system? Only the younger generation call it the system. Who are you Chloe?"

I cursed mentally. I said too much.

"I only know about the homophobia and the system because you told me about it. Remember?"

Alison narrowed her eyes.

"I never told you anything. I would remember." She pulled a gun and pointed it at me. "I'll ask again. Who the hell are you, Chloe Devereaux?"

I raised my hands in  surrender.

"Fine. You want to know who I am? I'll tell you. Just put the gun down."

"No way in hell," She hissed at me. "I'll put the gun down when you tell me who you really are and how you know so much about the system. Are you a spy? Was everything between us fake?"

Alison, like the rest of us mafia children, were trained to kill with no emotion, even family, but I could her her voice breaking.

"No, baby, I swear. I'm not a spy. And I'll tell you who I am when you put the gun down."

She raised the gun a bit and lightly squeezed the trigger..

"No. I am in charge here. And since you seem to know so much about the mafia and how everything works, you should know full well that we are trained to kill anyone, even our lovers. Now, tell me who you are."

Her voice took a forceful turn and I winced.

"Fine, FINE! My name is Sakusa Y/n, and I am the daughter of Kira and Kenta Sakusa, the last Huntington Caspiro. now please, put the gun down!"

She lowered her gun. I took the opportunity to wrap her in my arms and press a kiss to her neck.

"How is that possible? I was at your funeral. You're supposed to be dead."

"I'm alive, I swear. My parents helped me fake my death so I could leave the life and be my own person. It was purely by chance that I met and fell in love with you, another mafia child. Alison, please. You have to believe me. Please, I love you."

Alison looked at with me with watery eyes. Then, the full force of what I had said hit me.

"You love me?" The look in her eyes was absolutely helpless. I cupped her cheek and placed my forehead against hers.

"I do love you. More than anything. And I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you. When I heard what Semi had said about our relationship, I was thrilled, but I was also scared. What if he had told someone else? You could've been killed, or worse, tortured and sexually assaulted to "get out the gay."

"I'm sorry for scaring you. I love you too."

We stayed in each others arms for a while longer, just enjoying each others company.

After about five minutes, Alison stood up suddenly.

"Wait a second, since you are mafia, don't you have a betrothed too? What will he think about us?"

I scratched the back of my neck sheepishly.

"I honestly don't know. I'm positive that my parents have chosen someone for me, I just don't know who. I guess I'll have to call them and tell them to cancel the engagement."

Alison's eyes widened.

"Your parents would do that? They would allow you to make a decision like that? You're kidding."

I smiled.

"Well, they've helped me come this far. Who knows how much else they'll do?"

Hours later I nervously tapped my foot as the phone rang, waiting for my parents to pick up. After a few seconds, they finally did.

"Hello? Who is this? And why are you calling so late at night?"

The groggy voice of my mother came from over the phone.

"Hey mom, it's Y/N."

Her voice perked up instantly.

"Y/N? Babygirl? Is that really you?"

"Yes mom. It's me."

"Are you ok> Are you hurt> Has anyone tried anything? If they have, just give me their name and they'll be dead come morning, you can count on it."

I laughed.

"Mom, I'm fine. Really. I just wanted to tell you that I met someone."

"You did! My babygirl is in love? What's the lucky guy's name?"

All traces of my mother's tiredness was gone. Instead, there was a giddiness, like a teenager on prom night."

"Well, actually, her name is Alison. Alison Ramírez. I believe you know her."

My mother went silent for a moment.

"I see. I've met Alison, she is a sweet girl."

My heart pounded with excitement. So my mother approved!

"Yeah, she is a sweet girl."

"But I'm afraid a relationship between you two won't work out. You realize that she is engaged to Semi Eita, right? I couldn't care less about your sexuality. I just don't want you or her to be killed."

I laughed.

"Mom, it's fine. Eita already knows about the two of us, and he doesn't care who Ali sees as long as they still produce a couple heirs. He doesn't mind that we are having an affair."

"He doesn't? That's good. I always knew the Semi boy was a good one. But there is something you need to know. Your father and I have already selected a husband for you. And I'm not sure they'll be ok with you and Alison. "

"But doesn't everyone think I'm dead?"

"That's where it gets complicated, darling. They figured out almost immediately that you were still alive. And I think they still expect you to marry them."

"Then, can you ask them to call it off? I want to spend the rest of my life with Ali. I love her, mom."

"I'll see what I can do. Convincing him and your father will be difficult.

I smiled.

"Well, I think the Annika Makarov who negotiated an international peace deal at 16 could convince a few men to cancel a wedding. I believe in you mom."

I heard my mother suck in breath.

"So you know about that, huh? Well, when you put it that way, I guess you're right. Well, Ill talk to them in the morning. Goodnight my love."

My mother hung up, and I pumped my fist in excitement. For once, things were looking up.
