Lollie Parker

You know first base, second base, third base?

Right now Lollie and Lucas were on second base, eventually moving on to the third.

It was exciting.

Lollie and Lucas stood on a baseball field in the middle of freezing weather.

"I hit that." Lollie said.

"I know you did, but it went to second base."

"No, it didn't it went out of second base." Lollie sighed, "What if I hit it again?"

Lucas smiled, "What do I get out of this?"

"If I hit it and you catch it on second base. I'll buy you anything you want from Topanga's."

"Anything?"

"Anything and everything."

"Okay. What if I don't catch it?"

Lollie shrugged her shoulders, "I don't know. You know me, you know what I like."

Lollie stuck her hand out, "Deal?"

Lucas smiled and shook her hand.

"Deal."

This was considered a date to them. They had fun with their dates. Their friends and family thought it was odd that going to a baseball field in forty-five-degree weather or literally tackling each other to the ground was weird, but Lucas and Lollie didn't care.

All that matters is that they were enjoying each other's company and that's exactly what they were doing.

When Lollie made it to home base she turned around and faced him.

"The automatic ball machine thing is going to start and I'll hit it and it will fly over your head, okay?"

"Is that so?"

"Oh, I know so."

Lollie got into position and was ready to hit the ball.

When the machine threw the ball Lollie hit it with a ton of force.

It did fly over Lucas' head and he didn't catch it.

"Yes!"

Lollie ran over towards Lucas and jumped on his back.

"I told you."

"Would you look at that?"

Lollie smiled, "I could be a baseball player."

"I wouldn't doubt that."

Lollie hopped off his back.

"I'm having a good time."

"I'm glad you are."

"I still want my prize though."

"I still want my prize though." He mocked.

"Are you mocking me?"

"Of course."

The two of them laughed.

"You want your prize?" Lucas asked.

"Right now? Sure."

"Okay, close your eyes."

Lollie told as she was told and closed her eyes.

Lucas bent down and kissed her.

The two of them parted.

"That's my prize?"

"Yes, but there's always more."

"Well, thank you."

"Hot chocolate?" He asked.

"Hot chocolate."

"Legacy." Mr. Matthews said.

He looked around his classroom and saw a goose in Farkle's seat.

"Why is Farkle a goose?"

"That's the Einstein Academy goose." Riley said.

"Oh, of course, the Einstein Academy goose. Why is it on Farkle's desk?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"Einstein captured Farkle." Lollie said.

"It was their end-of-the-year prank." Lucas added.

"So, since they took our mascot-" Maya started.

"We took theirs and now we're even." Noah finished.

"Farkle's not a mascot." Mr. Matthews said.

"What would you call him?" Maya asked.

"Where's Zay? They got Zay, too?" He asked, completely ignoring Maya.

"Zay's back in Texas. He's at Vanessa's spring formal." Lucas said.

"All right, guys. Listen up. It's your last week of school. This is my last chance to teach you something." Mr. Matthews said.

"Do you have more to teach us?" Maya asked.

"I have so much more I wanna teach you. So much more. I mean, you guys are gonna be leaving this place. What will you be leaving behind? What is your legacy? I wanna talk about just what you've gotten from this place, but what you've given." Mr. Matthews said.

Maya gasped, "He's right. We still haven't thought of our class prank! I was thinking we could let all of the air out of school. Everybody would just be like."

She grabbed her neck and pretended to choke, "That'd be hi-larious."

Farkle huffed and walked into the classroom, "I'll tell you what's hi-larious. Nobody saved me! Why did nobody save me?"

"Farkle, we looked for you for a whole five minutes, and then we took the goose." Riley said.

"He's the new you." Maya smiled.

"Donnie Barnes, regular goose." Lucas said.

"I'd see that movie." Mr. Matthews said.

"I don't want to relive that day." Lollie said.

"Oh, please. Farkle cannot be replaced by a goose. Farkle is unique and one of a kind."

Farkle bent downs towards the goose, "Hah!"

It honked back at him.

"You don't know me."

Lollie had her head on the desk, she wasn't sleeping. She was listening.

Riley stood outside the classroom with her face pressed against the glass as Maya whispered things to Noah.

She was also laying on his desk.

"You came into this place a bunch of young kids who didn't know very much, and now look at ya. Young men and women ready for what's next." Mr. Matthews said.

He approached Maya, "Snap out of it!"

He looked over at the window and told Riley to come inside.

She only put more pressure between her and the glass.

Mr. Matthews faces Noah, "What are you doin'?"

"At this point, I don't know what's going on."

Mr. Matthews sighed, "Get in your seat."

Maya sat up and went to her seat.

"Now, the most important thing you can do in life is give people the reason to remember you. The people who do that are the ones we study in here. So, your last assignment from me and for yourselves is to figure out what you will give back."

"What?" Maya asked.

"Nothing just looking." Noah said.

"Don't you have to look at her now?" Maya asked.

Noah sighed. "Right now we are all friends. I don't want to hurt anyone. I love your outfit by the way."

Riley smacked the window with both of her hands and shouted.

"You look nice too, Riley."

Riley looked between her classmates and came back inside.

"What are you grateful for? Who do you want to remember you?" Mr. Matthews asked, "Do something about it right now. Now get outta here."
﹏﹏﹏﹏

After a few minutes, Lollie popped her head back inside the classroom.

"Can I help you?" Mr. Matthews asked.

Lollie walked inside and sat at a desk.

"Even though you're probably going to follow me everywhere, I want to say goodbye."

"Why?"

Lollie sighed, "You really helped me when I first came here and I brushed you off. You've really inspired me in more ways than you could imagine."

Mr. Matthews smiled at her.

"So if you do follow us in high school or legitimately anywhere else. I want you to help me, even when I don't seem like I need it because I probably do."

Lollie stood up, "I'm glad you've been my teacher."

Lollie walked towards him and hugged him.

Later that day the group of friends sat down at their desk.

"What?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"You got one last lesson for the road?" Lollie asked.

"Yeah. I do."

"Well, I've never said this before, but you have my attention." Maya said.

"Good. This one's important. I've gotten to watch you guys become friends and I've gotten to watch you grow. You guys grew up so fast and I've been trying to teach you to keep your feelings inside." Mr. Matthews said.

"And you were right. Look at us." Riley said.

"I was wrong. Your teacher was wrong. I can't keep you in this place. You've outgrown it. You guys are graduating to whatever comes next. Do you know why?"

"No." Maya said.

"You've earned it." Mr. Matthews said.

"How do we know when we're ready?" Lollie asked.

"The same way we know anything. Let's take one last test and see." Mr. Matthews said.

The five of them groaned as Farkle cheered.

"Are you even allowed to do this? It's the last day of school." Riley asked.

"I'm still your teacher. I can do whatever I want. Besides, this test isn't for a grade. This is the test to find out what you've actually learned here. Question one. What's the secret of life? Maya?"

"People change people." Maya answered.

"And for extra credit?"

"What us does for them?"

"What does that mean?"

"How we help those who are less fortunate than us."

"Are you two an us or them?"

"We're an us. I'm very blessed. We all are."

"Question two. Sneak attack." Mr. Matthews said, "Riley? Lollie?"

"Pearl Harbor." Lollie said.

"And for extra credit?"

"Missy Bradford tried to tear our friendships apart. Lucas and Lollie were new here and she tried to throw a sneak attack. I think that was the moment we all realized what we really meant to each other. The moment we all came together." Riley said.

"Good. Farkle? Canada." Mr. Matthews said.

"Our greatest allies are the people right next to us." Farkle said.

"Noah?"

"I think I was the most changed by these people. I know that whatever I'm feeling, I can just tell my friends and everything would be okay."

"Will it?" Riley asked.

"I guess we'll see."

"I thought we stopped." Maya said.

"I thought we were just friends." Riley said.

"We're not. We're no good at it. We can't even look at each other anymore. I don't need any note cards to know that we have different feelings now." Noah explained.

"And that's why your teacher was wrong. I can't hold you back from what you feel. Congratulations. You've all passed this test with flying colors." Mr. Matthews smiled.

"What happens now?" Lucas asked.

"Now you graduate, Lucas. You walk out of here with everything you've learned and you live life. You live it. You face whatever comes. This is gonna be the greatest test of your friendship yet."

"Wow. I made it to high school. We're gonna need some good teachers, Matthews." Maya said.

"Yeah. So, one last thing. How will the school remember you?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"I have an idea." Lucas said.

"What's our prank?" Maya asked.

"I have an idea." Riley said.
﹏﹏﹏﹏

The group of friends gave the elementary school kids a tour of the middle school.

"And that concludes our tour of the big, bad John Quincy Adams Middle School." Riley said.

"Not so scary, right?" Maya asked.

"You guys are gonna do great here." Noah said.

"There's one more thing before you guys go." Farkle said.

"We wanted to give you something from our class to yours." Lucas said.

"We think one of the greatest legacies in life is friendship." Lollie said.

Lollie removed the blanket to reveal the friendship bench.

"And no matter what happens in your new school, friends always have a place where they can sit, and talk, and work things out." Lucas said.

Ms. Kossal approached them, "Because sometimes, life swirls you all up and knots people together for a reason. Is that what you're feeling?"

Maya nodded as she looked at the cat picture.

"I think everybody should leave their mark." Riley said.

Lollie smiled, "We work very well together."
﹏﹏﹏﹏

Lollie stood in her red cap and gown and looked over the ledge of the rooftop.

Lucas approached her, "You okay?"

"Yeah, just thinking."

"Want to y'all about it?"

"This is the next big step of our lives. It's kind of nerve-wracking."

Lucas grabbed her hand, "We've made it this far. How bad could high school actually be?"

Worse than what he thought.

"You would've been fine without me." Mr. Matthews said.

"I don't really see it that way, Dad."

"None of us do." Maya said.

"Thank you for teaching my daughter so well." Katy said.

"My pleasure."

Minkus smiled, "I don't think Farkle would've reached his full potential without you, Cory."

"Thanks, Minkus. He had a lot to live up to."

"Thanks. That's why we want to see what he does."

"Of course he will."

"I don't really think you understand, Matthews." Lollie said.

"What?"

"Their class prank. Oh, you haven't heard about that?" Topanga asked.

Mr. Matthews panicked, "No. What'd they do?"

"Well, we started talking about legacy." Riley said.

"About what we left behind." Maya said.

Lollie smiled, "And what we don't want to leave behind."

"What we wanted to take with us." Lucas said.

Zay patted his shoulder, "This is good."

"We stole something from school." Maya said.

"You what?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"This is good." Zay repeated.

"Well, put it back!" Mr. Matthews said.

"Nope. It's ours now. We captured the real John Quincy Adams mascot, and we're taking it with us. Forever." Lollie said.

"What did you guys do?" Mr. Matthews asked.

Maya smiled, "We stole you."

"He told you it was good." Noah said.

"What are you talkin' about?" Mr. Matthews asked

"Our mom called Mr. Jonathan and we told him that you had a lot more to teach us." Noah said.

"They got you promoted, Daddy!" Auggie said.

"Of course, the superintendent of schools didn't want to move teachers around for only one student, so there would have to be a lot of other people who thought you knew what you were doing." Topanga said.

"So, the parents put together a little petition, got some signatures and we presented it to him. I was very convincing." Minkus explained.

"How many parents?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"All of 'em. We want our children to have the best." Katy said.

"You're going to high school, Cory. Again." Topanga said.

Mr. Matthews approached Riley, "We get to stay together."

"You said you had a lot more to teach us. And now, you can." Riley said.
