3rd POV

Last time on Vox Machina, Vax scouted Umbrasyl lair but he was ambushed by the dragon. But thankfully his friends arrive just in time to safe him from the dragon. They did their best to fight Umbrasyl, but it was not enough even with their vestiges. They manage to escape from the dragon and they end up in another cave. Right now, Vax woke up from consciousness and remember what happened.

Vax: Chenga!

He then groans in pain from his injuries, but his sister checks up on him.

YN: A little late for a warning, don't you think?

Vex: Its okay. You're safe now.

Just then they hear a dragon roaring from distance as the cave shakes.

Vex: Sort of.

Scanlan: Okay, we got Vax, now let's slip out the back door.

Scanlan leaves but he was stop by Vax.

Vax: We're not running.

Scanlan: (Scoffs.) How many times do I have to say this? We can't win.

Keyleth helps Percy by holding his arm over her shoulder.

Percy: He makes an excellent point.

Keyleth: Okay, what if we leave and come back with help?

Vax: No damit, we'd never return in time.

YN: Even if we can, Umbrasyl will be ready for us.

Scanlan: Let's just get out of here before he finds us!

Vax: Don't you people see? If the Matron shown me anything, its that fate is real. Keyleth's people, Grog's herd, YN's portal accident, our father. You think that was all chance? We're supposed to be here. (To Scanlan.) You arre supposed to be here.

Scanlan: Screw your Matron! She doesn't control my destiny.

Vax: No, Scanlan, you do. And you can run from it, or you can rise to meet it.

YN: Forget this, this is our only chance to kill the dragon.

Scanlan: Are you insane!?

YN: At least I'll go down with a fight! (Summons his spear.) I don't care whether its fate or not, we do what's necessary, not because we let it bind us until its written for us.

Vax nods before they both leave as YN drank his elixir. Scanlan hesitated and struggles to decide whether he should leave or help until he remembers what his daughter said.

Kaylie: What do you care? For all the wrong you've done in your life, you'd have to do a helluva lot right.

Scanlan made up his mind before speaking.

Scanlan: Vax, I-

Suddenly Umbrasyl breaks in another cave as he roars.

YN: Move!

Everyone got out of the way before Umbrasyl crashes

Umbrasyl: (Evil smirk.) Your relics led me to you.

He flys up and unleash a rain of acids above them. Luckily they ran to avoid the acid. Vax fly up a attacks Umbrasyl before Keyleth attacks in her fire giant form. She does her best to burn the dragon but the scales protected him.

    Suddenly Umbrasyl grabs her with his mouth and grips his teeths until a spear hits him and exploded by YN, preventing Umbrasyl to bite her in half. Keyleth then uses all of her fire magic to break free but with a cost of being thrown at the wall before she turns back.

YN: Keyleth!

Umbrasyl sees YN with the vestige.

Umbrasyl: I shall take that spear from your corpse.

YN: Then come and get it, dipshit!

The dragon breathes acid at him but he uses Quen to shield himself after he threw his spear at the stalactites. The spear explodes as the stalactites fall above Umbrasyl. Unfortunately YN fell on his knees, exhausted from overusing Quen as Umbrasyl rise back up, as if the stalactites weren't enough. Before Umbrasyl could kill the witcher, he was interrupted by Percy shooting at his face.

Percy: YN, get out of there!

Before YN could, Umbrasyl hits him with his tail and knocking him to the wall. Percy runs before the dragon breathes acid at him. Percy runs as fast as he can until the acid reaches him.

Vex: Percy!

Vex shoots the plant arrow to shield Percy. She then focus on firing Umbrasyl with all the arrows she can throw.

Umbrasyl: ENOUGH!!

Umbrasyl roars cause the stalactites to glow.

Percy was next to one and it immediately exploded including the ones close to Vex. She fell off her broomstick and accidentally dropped the bow vestige.

Vax: Fucking hell!

Umbrasyl knocks Vax away with a punch. Vex gets back up and notice the bow, but Umbrasyl grabs it before she could.

Umbrasyl: (Evil smirk.) Let us end this charade, shall we?

Suddenly a yellow construct mace hits him, revealing Pike has join the fight. She shouts as she hits him in the head before landing near him. Umbrasyl wasted no time to breathe acid at her, but thankfully she uses shield against it.

Umbrasyl: (Evil chuckles.) Look at you. Hardly a snack.

Umbrasyl goes for the kill but Grog stops him by grabbing his mouth.

Grog: Why don't you chew on me, fuck bucket.

He does his best to hold the dragon down while punching it by the face until Umbrasyl punches him before turning invisible.

Grog: Aw, what a dick.

Grog tries to punch where he is but fails.

Umbrasyl: Those knuckles will be mine.

Grog was then pin down as he struggles to get out the way as Umbrasyl ready his acid.

Keyleth: Grog!

Keyleth quickly uses her ice to block Umbrasyl acid. The dragon then appears behind her and breathes acid at her.

YN: No!

YN jumps on the dragons back and stabs it with the spear multiple times until he manage to break through the scales. Suddenly he gets a flash back on the first monster he killed and gets an idea.

YN: Let's see how you like this, chicken!

YN stabs Umbrasyl back, in the middle of his wings before YN tap his other spear. The other exploded on Umbrasyl's back to prevent the dragon from flying again. The dragon roars in pain before grabbing YN and smashes and pin him to the wall as the elixir wears off. He coughs black blood and accidentally drop the spear vestige.

Umbrasyl: You little insect, now die!

Umbrasyl was about to breathes acid until Pike saves him by throwing her construct mace at Umbrasyl face. YN watses no time but to use Aard at his face.

Scanlan POV

I hide from being spotted by Umbrasyl as I watch everything is going on. My hands begins to shake from fear and part of me is telling me to run or fight as I remember what my daughter said.

Kaylie: On thing I learned from this life: no one comes back to save you. So what are you prepared to do?

I grip my fist and shake off my fears.

Scanlan: Okay, come on, Scan, you gotta gnome up for the team, for Kaylie, for your imaginary grandkids.

Before I could make my move, but I saw The dragon threw YN toward Pike as they both crash to the wall as Pike cries out in pain. Umbrasyl picks up the spear and my fears come back straight to me causing me to freeze while watching all my friends are struggling to fight back against the dragon.

Scanlan: Nope, screw that.

I grab my lute and run away until I hear my friends.

Vax: Sister!

YN: Damit, he's still strong even when its on the ground!

I then hear my daughter voice in my head one last time.

Kaylie: From all I've heard, it figures you'd run.

I look back to my friends are still struggling to hold their ground. Its now or never, I have to make my decision before its too late.

3rd POV

Vex was thrown by Umbrasyl to her friends that are down. Grog was the last person standing against the dragon as he charges and goes for the punch until his fist stops in mid air.

Umbrasyl: That was a mistake.

Grog tries to punch with his other hand but ends up the same thing. Umbrasyl then reveals himself as he's holding Grogs fists.

Grog gives all of his strength he has left to overpower the dragon, but it wasn't enough when his injured leg got broken again as he screams in pain. Umbrasyl takes the gauntlet vestige away as Grog fell on his knees. Umbrasyl laughs at his failure and Pike saw he was gonna die

Pike: Grog!

Keyleth quickly use her vines to grab and pull Grog away from the acid breath until she became exhausted from using whats left of her stamina yet saved Grog life as he crashed next to them.

Pike: (Afraid.) We can't beat him.

Umbrasyl: (Evil grin.) This mountain will be your tomb.

He growls while YN grab his sword to support him to getting back up, but he was too injured to even stand up.

Vax: If this is our fate, so be it...

Umbrasyl: (Evil grin.) I owe you my thanks, for you have given me Four Vestiges of Divergence.

(The spear next to the gauntlets. Trust me.)

Umbrasyl prepares to finish them all. YN holds Keyleths hand but she hugs him while the twins hold their hands together to embrace their death. Umbrasyl was about to kill them until he was stop by someone shouting at him.

???: Three!

He looks back and sees Scanlan who was sneaking and getting the sword back.

Scanlan: This one's mine.

Umbrasyl: No!

Everyone saw Scanlan fighting the dragon on his own but YN knows it won't be enough for the gnome alone. Before he could think, he quickly let's go of Keyleth and summons a spear.

YN: Do it, Scanlan!

He quickly taps the spear one last time as the one Umbrasyl has on his hand exploded in front of the dragons face. Even if it was a short time, this distraction gave Scanlan the opening before he jumps without hesitation.

Scanlan stabs right to Umbrasyl left eye as the dragon roars in pain and tries to get him off. But that didn't stop Scanlan as he twist the sword before unleashing a powerful blow against the dragon.

Once that was over, the dragon collapse to the ground. Causing a cloud of dust around the dragon. Once it was gone, it revealed that Umbrasyl, the devourer of hope....

Is finally dead.

Everyone frozed after they've just witness that Scanlan Shorthalt, has finally took courage and killed the dragon

(YN next to Keyleth.)

Pike: Wait, where's Scanlan!?

Pike looks around until she saw him underneath the dead dragons head.

Pike: (Worried.) Oh, no.

Grog: (Retrieve his gauntlets.) Vax, YN, give ma a hand!

Everyone else retrieve their vetiges before the three of them lifts and moves the dragons head away before Pike grabs Scanlan and tries to heal him.

Pike: Come on. Come on!

She tries her best but she was out of healing powers.

Pike: Oh god, no...

Vex: Like, can't you...

Vex couldn't finish as she knows that Pike can't. Everyone else became silent to see their fallen gnome friend.

Pike: Scanlan....

Pike begins to shed tears at it falls on Scanlans face.

Pike: You did it. You might not have known what you could do, but I always did.

Pike kisses Scanlan for the first time.

Pike: (Whispers.) Your daughter would have been proud....

Everybody took a moment of silent to mourn their friends, knowing that he gave his life to save his frie-

Scanlan: (Imitating Pike voice.) And I'm in love with you, too, Scanlan.

Pike then saw his eyes open as he smirks.

She then realize that he was faking his death this whole time.

Pike: Wait, you're alive motherfucker!?

Scanlan: (Smirks.) Heheh, oops.

Pike couldn't help but smiles and hug him, happy to see that he's alive.

Pike: Oh, you're okay!

This made everyone sigh in relief that he's alive.

Keyleth: (Relief.) Don't do that again.

YN: (Chuckles.) Well played shorty. Well played.

Pike lightly punch scanlan shoulder which hurt a lot for him. He chuckles but it was cut short as he notice something glowing.

Scanlan: Uh, what's that glow?

Everybody looks to where he sees.

Vax: I don't know, lets check it out.

They all check it out but YN pick up a scenes as he sniffs something familiar. Or you could say someone familiar as Percy notice him.

Percy: What is it, something wrong?

YN: That scent, I recognize that familiar scent.

Percy: Umbrasyl?

YN: Someone else, but doesn't matter right now, let's go join the others.
