Kakashi POV
I sat besides (y/n) who was sleeping peacefully on my bed. She was tightly gripping the shirt I had given her.
I began running my fingers through her (y/h/c) hair. It was matted from sweat but still soft. The tension in her shoulders lessened and her grip relaxed.
I let out a breath.
What am I doing?
I loved all of my students, who were practically my friends. But why was it different for (y/n). More and more often I found myself sneaking glances at her, making sure she was okay. And more and more often when she spoke to me I felt a pang in my chest. Especially when she smiled. Her face would crinkle and she just looked so... alive.

Unlike me. An ANBU who had killed more people than I could possibly count. An ANBU who had tortured and been tortured. In comparison (y/n) was like a saint. I knew I was being selfish. She deserved someone better.

"No!"
I was snapped out of my thoughts by (y/n) crying out. She was panting again and shaking. I pulled her up and wrapped my arms around her, rocking back and forth.
"It's okay (y/n)" I felt water on my hand and looked to see tears flowing down her face.
"P-please don't leave. Don't go. I n-need you"
I squeezed her tighter.
"I'm not going anywhere (y/n). I'm right here"
She shook her head and tried to pull away from me but I held her still.
"I - I need you. M-"
Her sentence was interrupted by a coughing spasm. She jerked awake, wild eyed and scared.
"(Y/n) calm down. It's okay. You're awake now" it hurt me to see her like this. Her breathing evened out some and she turned over, pressing her wet face into my chest. I simply held her as she quietly cried.
"Kakashi?" She asked weakly
"Yes?"
She hesitated and I could feel her pulse quicken.
"do you get nightmares?"
"yes, all the time"
"how do you deal with them?"
"I just imagine that the person I love the most is there with me. I know that as long as they're there I'm safe"
She relaxes in my arms.
"I'm safe" she whispers.
I feel my face get hot and I'm glad I'm wearing my mask.
What did that mean? Was she just reassuring herself? Or was she replying to me, insinuating that I was the person she loved the most?

That's impossible and it was silly of me to even consider it.

"I don't want to go back to sleep" she mumbles into my shirt
I look at the clock. It's almost 6.
"Okay" I say softly "I'll go make you some breakfast okay? Just stay here"

//// Your POV

You feel Kakashi shift away from me to get up. You try to grab onto him, You didn't want him to leave yet. But he does and you're left lying on the bed. You hear the sounds of fridges and cabinets open.
You sit up and after waiting for the dizziness to pass you stand up. You take small steps out of the room and into the hallway then into the kitchen.
From the smell you guess Kakashi is making eggs and French toast.

You stumble into the chair at the table. Alerting him to your presence. He's swiftly at your side.
"Why didn't you stay in bed"
"I wanted to move around a little, I'm okay now, really"
His angry expression softens and he kisses your head.
You feel the blood rush to your face and turn away, missing that the same thing had happened to him.
"Sorry I don't know what came over me" he mumbles and quickly goes back to the stove.

What was going on?

A few minutes later Kakashi places a plate of eggs and toast in front of you and take the chair opposite. You take small bites.
"It's good" you say in between mouthfuls
"I'm glad. Usually my cooking is well... not that great" he chuckles and rubs the back of his head reflexively.
You're about to shove another piece of toast in your mouth when Kakashi leans forward and places his palm on your forehead. You sit there mouth open.
"You still have a fever. We need to get it down" he then gets up and goes somewhere else in his apartment.
I swear to god if he doesn't start warning me before he does stuff like that I'm going to have a heart attack.

He returns as you finish your meal with a bucket of cold water, a cloth, and a book.
"You can sit on the couch"
He helps you up, even though you don't really need it, and guides you to his sofa. You lie down and he places the cold cloth on your head.
"Is it okay if I read to you? It'll help pass the time"
You choke a bit.
"One of Your? Books?" You say. You knew what kind of material he read on missions and you think you'd actually die if he read even a sentence of that to you.

He turns red in response. "You know I have other books besides those. And besides you're not old enough for that sort of stuff"
You frown.
"Hey I'm an adult Kakashi I know about what's in them"
"Shhh" he just shakes his head.
"Anyway this book is about something way different"

He begins to read from the novel. His voice flows over you. It was deep and warm, charming almost. You never realized how nice his voice sounded until you were lying there and the only thing you could hear was him speaking. Every once in a while Kakashi would pause to change the towel on your forehead. He was right, the time did pass quickly. Soon you ate lunch and then dinner.
He read the last sentence and closed the book shut.

"The end, now time to get you to sleep"
You hadn't wanted the book to end. You felt like you could have listened to him speak forever. You let him carry you over to the bed and tuck you in.

"Kashi?"
He looks at you
"Thank you... for all this"
He smiles down at you with a look you could have sworn was affectionate.
"It's no big deal... I wouldn't want my best girl to have to deal with this by herself"

Best girl????

"Ah I mean.. best student" he laughs and you feel your heart melt.
Since when had you felt so in love with him?
