It All Started With A Text...

Chapter Three

I woke up in a fast-moving vehicle. I squinted my eyes and hesitantly opened them. I saw Karla sitting next to me and a couple of people taking my....vitals?

What the heck?

"Oh, she's awake!" one of them whispered.

"Oh, Alexa, thank gosh! You had me so worried!" Karla rambled.

"What happened?" I asked groggily.

"Okay, well, we were playing volleyball in gym. Maggie purposely aimed the volleyball at you and it hit you square in the nose. You fell and smacked your head really hard on the floor, and you blacked out. After you were out for five minutes, we called the ambulance. Maggie was taken away, kicking and screaming that you deserved it, and she is probably going to be expelled, along with Cassandra, because they both started to try and slap you and punch and kick you. Your parents were called, and they are going to organize a couple of restraining orders and then meet us at the hospital."

I nodded very slowly, grimacing at the pain in my head. Then attendant noticed this and started to click on a flashlight.

"Sorry, honey, but we need to check to see if you have a concussion," she apologized, shining the flashlight into my eyes.

"I think she has a concussion," she whispered to the other attendant, who nodded. I started panicking a little. "Shh, calm down," she soothed me. "We're almost there, and then we can check, okay?"

I nodded; but it hurt so bad. I winced, tears gathering in my eyes. The attendants jumped up as soon as the ambulance stopped moving. They quickly strapped me to the gurney and started rolling it. Karla found my hand and squeezed it. I squeezed it back and she smiled at me.

A doctor came in with a team of nurses. A nurse immediately moved the gurney into a nearby hospital room. They settled me onto the bed and started taking my vitals again. Then they wheeled me down the hall to the MRI room. They gave me special glasses that played a movie. I picked Soul Surfer, and they started the machine.

I was put in, and I felt a little claustrophobic. I heard a voice through the little intercom. "Alexa, how ya doin'?"

"I just feel a little claustrophobic," I replied.

"Just focus on the movie and you'll be fine," he promised. "We'll be done in about fifteen minutes."

"Okay."

I started focusing on the movie glasses and then before I knew it, I was out of the machine. I took off the glasses and they wheeled me back to the room.

Karla was sitting in a chair in the corner. She jumped up and squeezed my hand when she saw me.

"Okay, now what?" I asked.

"We're going to hook you up to an I.V. and take a look at your X-rays. Do you need anything to relieve the pain? Would you like pain-killers?" the kind nurse explained.

"Some pain killers would be nice," I said politely.

"No problem, honey. As soon as I get the I.V. set up, I'll get you hooked up with that." she said.

She elft and came back about five minutes later with I.V. supplies in her hand. She had me squeeze my fist a few times, and then she inserted the needle. She put the plastic tube covering on it, and then attached the bags of liquid and everything to it. She adjusted some liquid, and I started to feel a little pain relief.

"Is that better?" she asked.

"Much." I replied, smiling gratefully.

"Okay, the doctors will be back in about a half hour, so just sit tight until then," she said, smiling at me and leaving the room.

Karla sat beside me and we staretd talking. "So, are you hungry at all?" she asked, checking her watch. "It's around one."

I kind of was, but after I remembered that I was trying to lose a couple of pounds, I decided against it. I needed willpower to fight my weight.

"No, I'm okay," I said, giving her a small smile. I looked around the room. "Hey, is it just me, or is it dark in here?" I asked.

"They keep it like that in case you do have a concussion. You could be sensitive to light," she explained.

I nodded in understanding. We just talked until my parents showed up. "Alexa, are you okay?" they cried, rushing over to me.

"I'm fine," I laughed. "The doctors will be coming in any second to tell me if I have a concussion or not."

"Oh, your parents are here," the doctor said, coming into the room. "Excellent. I am Doctor Phillips, but you can call me Jared. We have indeed confirmed that Alexa has a minor concussion. She will need to stay here for just tonight, to have us monitor her."

"When can I started activities again? I cheer and dance," I asked.

"You can started that on Wednesday. You'll be fine after tonight, it was very, very minor, but enough to just make you black out. No worries at all. You should be in no pain at all in a couple of hours, we jsut want to observe you."

I nodded. "Okay."

He explained a few things to my parents, and then they left to sort the bills out. Karla and I talked for awhile, and then they came in with my dinner.

I picked at the hospital food. Disgusting! Then my parents came in with the cafeteria food. I ate that, much better!

Karla had to leave then, and my parents arranged to have work off tomorrow, and then Karla promised to come by early in the morning. My dad came by with my phone and iPod a little later and I immediately grabbed them and started looking through my phone.

I had about nineteen "Are you okay?" text messages. So I sent out a mass text that read: Hey guys, yeah, I am ok, I just have a concussion from hitting the floor when I got whacked with the volleyball. What happened after I blacked out in gym?

I clicked send, and then I turned on my iPod and started playing a few games. I hung out in my room until I got really bored, and then I snuggled under the itchy hospital blankets and fell asleep.

A little boring, I know, I know, but I've got a bit of a headache. So, I've got no school tomorrow so I'll probably upload then, too. But I've got the orthodontist tomorrow, too, so my teeth will hurt and then I have two hours of dance.
