It All Started With A Text...
Chapter Nine
I walked into the school hallway with my crutches, and everyone either stared or rushed towards Karla and I.
"What happened, Alexa?" someone cried.
I shrugged. "I fell during ice skating and let's just say, you do NOT want to see my knee right now."
I had to tell them what happened so I would be left alone, and then Karla helped me to our lockers. I grabbed the stuff I would need for my first four classes, placed them in my backpack, and then put my backpack on one shoulder.
"So, we get to leave classes five minutes early today?" Karla asked. "All because of your crutches?"
"Yeah, apparently they don't want me getting more injured, or something like that," I replied as we went to homeroom. We took our seats, and then talked some more until the bell rang.
Attendance was taken, and five minutes before the bell, Mr. Yates nodded towards me, signaling that I could go ahead and leave with Karla.
We went, slowly, to math and managed to get there right as everyone else got out. Mr. Brown left the room muttering to himself and shaking his head.
I turned to Karla and sighed. "He's in a mood again."
He came back in thirty seconds before the final bell, grumbling again. When the bell rang, he said gruffly, "Assignment is on the board. I want total silence."
I was taken aback, but I pulled out my notebook, pencils, book, and calculator before starting on the assignment. I was done in about forty-five minutes, so I put everything away except for a sheet of paper, and I started writing a little story.
"Miss Burnham, what are you doing?" I heard. My head shot up.
"Oh, I'm finished," I said, gesturing towards the board.
"Why are you-writing?"
"Because there is nothing else I can do. I'm ahead in this class. And all my others."
"So?"
"Uh, I was just writing because I have no more school work to be done."
I was getting fed up. Big time.
"Well, then do tomorrow's assignment."
"I told you, I already completed it. And the rest of the week's, too." Everyone was staring at us, in disbelief. I was only doing something because I was bored, and he was making way too big of a deal out of this.
"One more word and it's straight to the office!" he finally yelled.
My mouth dropped. "What did I do?"
"Office, now!" he bellowed. I put my stuff away and grabbed my crutches. Karla stood up.
"Oh, no you don't. You're not going with her."
"I have too," she replied. "Her parents, and principal's orders."
"Well, too bad." he said. I cocked an eyebrow.
"Do you want me to go ask the principal?"
"No, you are going to sit down. Right. This. Instant!"
"I can't. I have to go with her. I am under order from my dad, her parents, the doctor, and the principal. I have a doctor's note!"
She handed it to him. He ripped it right down the middle. "Sit down!"
"You know what? Come on, Alexa." She grabbed her stuff, and we went as fast as we could to the office.
"Alexa and Karla? You two cannnot possibly be in trouble," the secretary said in disbelief.
"Oh, just ask Mr. Brown. We're in loads of trouble. I was finished with today's, and the whole week's work, so I was writing, and he started arguing with me, and then sent me here for absolutely no reason, and Karla has strict orders to be with me at all times, and he wouldn't let her go with me, and he was just in a rage over nothing. And he ripped up my doctor's note, didn't care about anything, and it was actually kind of scaring me." I replied.
"Ah, okay. You two can go," I heard. The principal was standing there, eyebrows raised. "I heard the whole thing. You can stay here until five minutes to the bell, alright? I have to make a phone call."
We heard him go to the office and close the door, yet I still heard the entire conversation.
"You need to be here directly after school, Carl," I heard him say, which is Mr. Brown's first name. "We need to have a little talk."
The whole thing lasted about five minutes, and then he hung up. Karla and I talked quietly unitl it was time to leave, and then we made our way to science.
We had a discussion about elements and reactions all hour. It was boring but we didn't do any work, so that was the upside to it.
Ms. Sanders let us go early, so Karla and I walked all the way to the other side of the building for choir. We got there as the bell to get into class rang, so we picked up the pace a little and took our spots for singing. Karla grabbed my binder for me, which was filled with my sheet music.
Ms. Jones clapped her hands sharply and we all snapped our heads toward her. "Please take out your Ave Maria sheet music and we can get started."
I flipped to the beginning of the song, and we sang through it a couple times, and then Ms. Jones had the soloists grab wireless microphones so we could sing our solos during the song. Karla grabbed us both one, and she took her spot next to me again.
Mr. Carter said while Ms. Jones was yelling at the guys, "Sopranos, sing your beginning note."
I straightened up and sang the note clearly. He added in the altos, and then the tenors and basses, and then we started singing.
While the whole choir sang the beginning "Ooh," Ms. Jones had me, Karla, Sasha, Kyle, and Tyler sing in the microphones. Then the two guys sang their beginning part, and then Karla, Sasha and I sang our part.
Well, I sang the first few measures, and then they joined in, and then the rest of the chor joined in. It was so boring because the song is so long.
Karla and I almost didn't get to leave early, but we told her and wemanaged to get out of the room in time. We walked to History to find that we had a sub who looked totally clueless on what to do. She gave us a smile and then turned to the computer. She basically just let us talk the whole hour away, and it was very loud and hectic.
She almost didn't let me leave early, too, because she thought I was "Faking" Yeah, I can totally fake a bruised knee.
When we walked out of the room, we first stopped by our lockers, and put everything away, and then Karla grabbed my lunch.
"I think I can grab it," I tod her, reaching for it, but almost pitched forward with unbalance. Karla caught me and stood up straight.
"You can't even let go of your crutches, I think I can handle a bagged lunch. Come on, let's head to the lunch room." she said, raising her eyebrows.
I rolled my eyes playfully and we walked into the lunch room to be greeted with chaos. We found a table with some of the football players and cheerleaders. I sat next to Josh and greeted him with a smile.
"How's your knee today?" he asked me, returning my smile.
"A little better. I can move it a little bit, and I can like graze over it with my fingers, but that's about it," I told him, setting my crutches at the end of the table.
I spread out my lunch, which held a homemade salad with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and boiled egg, an orange, a bag of Mini 100 calorie cookies, and a bottle of water.
"Alexa," Karla said, giving me a warning look.
"What?" I asked innocently. I didn't see anything wrong with my lunch.
She hissed in my ear, "That thing is about four hundred calories. That is not enough for lunch. What did you have for breakfast?"
"Two boiled eggs and a piece of toast," I said truthfully.
Karla placed her fingers on her temples and sighed. "Please start eating right again," she pleaded before turning her attention to her lunch, which held a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, an apple, a brownie, and a juice box.
I ate my lunch quickly, and then Karla and I walked across the hallway to the gym, and I was immediately excused of doing anything, so I sat on the bleachers. Karla went and changed, and I got to watch everyone play volleyball, and it was incredibly boring because I couldn't do anything.
I got bored, so I checked on my knee, and the swelling was gone, and it was fading a tiny bit. I put a little bit of pressure on it, building it until I felt pain.
When we left, I was off to my favorite class of the day: language arts. We read a story about this kid that risked his life for a pair of shoes (it was based a few decades ago, in the Caribbean.)
When class was over, I packed up my bag and Karla and I went to the gym for dance. I situated myself on the bleachers and played my iPod before practice was over and it was cheer time. I read a book this time, and at seven, my mom picked Karla and I up and drove us home. Dinner was waiting for us, so we ate up, and then watched TV for awhile.
At ten, we both headed to our bedrooms after saying good night, and then I checked my Facebook. I had a couple of messages, which I replied to, and then I shut my computer and crawled into my covers, being careful of my knee.
I pulled my covers up to my chin, and then I rolled over and quickly fell asleep, falling into a deep, dreamless sleep.
