I was soon whisked away to the stands to watch the beginning of the match. Avery was a few seats behind me. When half time came around she quickly ran off. She was clearly feeling overwhelmed with everything. She wasn't invisible anymore. She was the entertainment.
I slipped out to follow her. I watched as Grayson led her to a second elevator. Jealousy burned at the pit of my stomach. It felt stupid. I was the one who kept messing with him.
Jameson popped into view from beside me, "What are you staring at."
"Grayson took Avery up that elevator," I looked to see the same jealousy burning inside him that I had mere seconds ago. "I assume it goes to the roof."
"Yes, it does."
I fixed him with a stern gaze, "You are not going to do something stupid."
He flashed me a grin, "I would never."
After he went up the elevator, it didn't take me long to follow him. This was going to be fun—or it would be a mess. Either way, I would probably get some entertainment.
Immediately after the elevator door opened I saw Avery sitting in the middle of the two boys. She was obviously rattled by whatever Jmaeson had just said. He was simply amused.
"Hate to break up love triangle 2.0 but we all need to talk," I say making my presence known to everyone.
Avery and Jameson get visibly irritated by the comment, Grayson however is simply confused. Good sign for me I suppose.
Jameson leant into Avery whispering in her ear, "She's on my team."
Right after the words leave his mouth her mood shifts instantly.
Grayson glared at me, "You are doing this as well."
"What else would I do with my day Gray Gray?"
He frowned slightly, "I thought you might be the voice of reason."
"I like to win." I told him before turning to the group, "Now back to what we all need to talk about. Well excluding him," I hint to Grayson, "Neither of you has any idea on what you are doing when it comes to figuring out where Toby is."
"That's why I have a wonderful assistant," Jameson said cracking a smile. I could see the layer behind it. He was trying to say something different.
I play along rolling my eyes, "I'm saying that this isn't just a dandy little game anymore. People are going to get hurt, bombed, kidnapped, and more. This is real life."
"There is no way that any of that will happen," Avery announces to me. Her face is set with a new determination to go through everything she already knows. She needs to win. I won't be able to get her to back down, but I can still freak her out.
"I can guarantee you this will cause a mess. Everything bad that will happen will happen to you. You are not going to solve this like the last one."
The line hit something at her core. Like she knew what I was saying would happen.
Before anyone says a word fireworks lit up the stadium.
The minute they did I saw Avery's face. It sounded like a gunshot. Panic raced through her. I could tell it was bad the way her body shook slightly. Jameson was right there in a second immediately rushing to the floor next to her.
"Fireworks," He said softly to her, "It's just fireworks for halftime."
I saw her body react to his voice and it trailed through her mind. She looked up and repeated it back to him.
"Just fireworks."
Grayson's eyes shifted over to me painted with a concerned look. I glared right back at him not bothering to say a word. Nothing needed to be said. Nothing could be said.
"For the record, Heiress, I have been making excellent progress on our bet," Jameson said trailing his hand along Avery's cheek, she shivered at his touch before standing up and leaving.
A second later Jameson did the same, "Back to the game then."
And then it was two.
"Still don't want to talk Annabelle."
"Nope."
His look was stern, "I think we need to have a proper conversation."
I felt my eyes roll, "I think I need to leave now."
"Are you going to keep ignoring me?" he said his voice stern. It wasn't how he was feeling. I could see the mix of annoyance and guilt on his face. The feeling that his problems were the ones around him needed to be fixed. Like his own ones were non-existent compared to mine.
"No."
Grayson ran a hand down his face, "I can't keep doing this."
The words hit me instantly. It was like a wave of cold water. I never understood how some of the most unintentional sayings could hurt the most. I don't know why this hurt. But it did. Everything hurt.
"Then don't."
I didn't turn around when he called me again.
I should of. I said I would stop lying.
—--------------------------
Monday meant back to school. Another long and pointless day of classes that I mildly disliked surrounded by people I very much disliked.
Due to my fight with Eva a week ago ment I was free from people coming up to me every five seconds to try and talk to me. It also caused a major shift in our circle of people.
I have had the same friend group since freshman year. There were six of us. Most of them were girls who had made their way up by talking to Eva and convincing her they were special.
I was able to make it to lunch without anyone in our group coming up to talk to me. I had a double criminology period in the morning which helped me avoid everyone.
"Anna," Squealed Ellie from beside me. She was a small blonde with beautiful curly hair, she looked like sunshine. "You won't believe what Eva is saying about you."
I forced a smile letting her guide me over to a table, "What is she saying this time."
She sat down beside me at our usual spot, "She is saying that you are the reasons she and Christian broke up."
Her face was lit up in excitement as she told me the whole story of what she had been hearing. Ellie lived for and gossip and drama that happened in our school. She also had intense problems with half the girls in our year from her constant rumour spreading. If you had a secret you didn't want her to know about it.
"She also said you like manipulated her into dating him in the first place."
"Now we all know that is bullshit," Anika says sliding down next to me. Her jet-black hair was pulled up today in a high pony highlighting her naturally tan skin. She looked effortlessly stunning. "She's just trying to get you apologised like you always do."
Anika is similar to me. She stays for the mandatory things you have to do to be in the group but has her own life outside of everyone. She's definitely my favourite out of everyone. She is level-headed but ready with a statement to make you feel like everything you care about is stupid. The one person you don't want to be mad at you.
"I don't care about fixing anything," I say leaning back on my seat.
They both stare at me confused.
The one thing about this group is I never let them know me. I never let anyone inside my mind or understand how I thought. Every argument I had with Eva they always thought I apologised and fixed it myself. I never did. Eva just told them what she wanted to happen.
I said unmindfully, "She'll get over it."
"I don't think she's going to," Ellie told me. She then paused and gave me a look of concern. "Is everything okay with you? I know things have been tough for you with everything."
"I'm a billionaire. Life is perfect," I say forcing some hope into my voice. Anika let out a cackle, something she rarely did.
"Somethings up with you girl," She claimed still smiling, "Somethings also wrong with your head."
I zoned out as the conversation turned into holiday plans and classes, nodding along and pretending to care when Ellie was afraid she wasn't going to get the diamond necklace she wanted for her birthday.
I saw Avery dash up from the spot with Xander walking out the front doors. The table she sat at had been occupied by Thea Rebecca and Xander who were discussing the new mystery at hand.
Avery looked annoyed and a little worried that she wouldn't win. She had something I could use now.
"Hey, I have to go talk to someone, I'll see you guys later."
The two sets turned to me both believing it was Eva I needed to speak to. A little irritation and disbelief spread on their faces. They both chose my side and didn't want me to back down just yet.
"It's Avery," I gave them a knowing look, "I'm not speaking to her."
"Oh," Ellie said nodding her head, "The girl with the money, I see."
Anika's face flashed with second-hand embarrassment from Ellie's comment, "I'll see you in Advance Calc next period."
"Yep, see you."
It took me a while to catch up with her. For some reason, a million people wanted to get in my way today.
When I finally did she was standing by her locker with an expression of pure fear and simmering anger on her face. She was holding notes that someone had put in her locker. Some dumb school prank.
"Who threatening you," I say walking up.
She looks up at me appearing as a deer in headlights not saying a word. Gently I grabbed the papers out of her hand.
They were comments about what people were saying about her. I stepped around to look inside her locker which only revealed a photo of the interview her father did.
"Did you do this?" She asks putting on a brave face. I could see her cracking. She couldn't have another thing set her off.
I let my face form into a subtle frown, "Avery if I wanted to do something to you it would be a lot worse than putting a few comments from people on the internet in your locker." I looked back up to the photo of her father, "He can't do anything. You know that right."
"How do you know?" She croaked out.
I shrug, "When parents decide they want you again it usually takes a bit more convincing than an interview after their kid becomes rich."
She frowns like I've just stated the obvious, "I know that just-"
I cut her off, "Everyone gets the comments. Everyone has a psycho parent who wants your money. What you need to do is talk to Oren."
"I was going to."
"Good."
