I think everyone was screaming and freaking out. I bit my thumbnail.
Avery Kylie Grambs
A very risky gamble
She was panicky and freaked out. I mean who wouldn't be? I looked deeper Into every word she said. She never lied, she had no idea who Tobias Hawthorne was and she was definitely not a con woman. She was a puzzle that I lost a piece of and I found it. I think. No, she is insanely scared right now. And her favourite colour is green.
"Anna, don't spiral."
"I'm not."
"Look a little lost to me," he glared at me. Seriously like he thinks I'm spiralling.
"Says the drunk boy," I snap.
"I assure you, there is no mistake." Mr. Ortega met Avery's gaze before directing it to those who were making a fuss. "And I assure the rest of you, Tobias Hawthorne's last will and testament is utterly unbreakable. Since the majority of the remaining details concern only Avery, we'll cease with the dramatics. But let me make one thing very clear: Per the terms of the will, any heir who challenges Avery's inheritance will forfeit their share of the estate entirely."
"No will is that ironclad," Zara's husband said. He was furious he didn't get what he wanted. "Not when there's this kind of money at stake."
"Spoken," Nash interjected, "like someone who didn't really know the old man."
"The old man would have never let someone change his final decision, for like anything," I say. I feel like I'm only talking to reassure myself. There is still something I know I am missing.
"Traps upon traps," Jameson murmured. "And riddles upon riddles." his head tilted toward Avery, he thought she was a puzzle that he got to solve. His game. His new riddle.
"I think you should leave," Grayson told Avery. He gave her one of his not so subtle death glares. The one where he tries to make you feel inferior. I think I just make him look like he's constipated though.
"Technically..." Alisa Ortega sounded like she'd just swallowed arsenic. "It's her house."
"I don't understand," Avery says to the group. Another truth. She is just as clueless as the rest of us.
The emotions in is this room are too much form my brain to handle. I feel like I am collecting too much information at once. Inside my head I arrange information into categories of each person. Behaviour. Personality. Environment. I connect it with their emotions. It all makes sense. They all react how I thought they would. Every single time.
"My daughter is correct." Mr. Ortega kept his tone neutral. "You own it all, Ms. Grambs. Not just the fortune, but all of Mr. Hawthorne's properties, including Hawthorne House. Per the terms of your inheritance, which I will gladly go over with you, the current occupants have been granted tenancy unless—and until—they give you cause for removal." He let those words hang in the air. "Under no circumstances," he continued gravely, his words rife with warning, "can those tenants attempt to remove you."
The room was quiet and everyone was still freaked out and confused, some more than most. Oren took the first move and walked over to Avery holding out his hand.
"Oren!" Zara was shocked, "You work for this family."
"I worked for Mr. Hawthorne." John Oren paused and held up His letter that Mr Hawthorne wrote to him. "It was his last request that I continue in the employment of Ms. Avery Kylie Grambs." He stared at Avery. "Security. You'll need it."
"And not just to protect you from us!" Xander added to my left.
"Take a step back, please," Oren ordered.
I grabbed Xander by the collar and pulled him back a bit. The girl was already scared out of her mind she didn't need Xan's jokes.
Xander glared at me before holding up his hands. "Peace," he declared. "I make dire predictions in peace!"
"Xan's right." Jameson turned to face Avery, oh he definitely thought she was a game, "The entire world's going to want a piece of you, Mystery Girl. This has "story of the century" written all over it."
"Or a death sentence," I said under my breath. But not soft enough because Oren proceeded to glare at me.
A/n
Okay so this chapter is very short. I think I got the point across that Anna looks in a daze while she is profiling. Also I am like 90% sure that Avery's favourite colour is green but if it is not then I am sorry. I think soon I might try to do multiple POVs but I don't know.
Thank you for reading.
I hoped you liked it.
