I walk into the dining hall, the stone in my hand. My friends sit along the long wooden table.
"There she is!" Tait says, raising his glass to me.
I smile and sit down, laying the stone in my lap. They pass me a glass and a plate with heaps of food. I look at it with disgust.
"What's wrong, Ivanna?" Selman asks.
"This is more than anyone can reasonably consume."
They exchange confused looks, "Ivanna, we've seen you eat at least 10 times that amount in one sitting."
"I know, completely wasteful of me to do such."
They send another round of strange looks, "Are you okay?"
"Of course, I am okay. Why wouldn't I be?" I say, scarping some of the food onto another plate.
"You're acting strange." Raoul says.
"Strange?" I ask.
"What happened out there?" Tait asks.
"It's hard to explain, you wouldn't understand if I told you."
"How can you be sure?"
I sigh and show the stone, "This is what happened, it is an Infinity Stone. When I touched it, it burned. It felt like it was melting through my body and soul. It was terrifying. It showed me the horrors of people, what they could do when corrupted." I start shaking, "It doesn't sound as bad as it was."
A chill runs down my spine and I cringe. My friends exchange glances. Raoul looks at me with his pale blue eyes, "My Father told me about Infinity Stones once."
"Can you tell me what they are?"
"I don't quite remember, so don't think that my words have value. There are six Infinity Stones- they are conformed ingots of the old universe. They are very powerful..."
"Do you know what they do?" I ask.
"I remember that one of them can create whatever you want, another can posses the minds and bodies of others, one will take you wherever you want. Uh, there's a stone that lets you see the souls of the people around you-"
"Like Heimdall?" Tait asks.
"Yeah, like Heimdall."
"So how do I find out which Stone this is?" I ask.
"You expect me to know?"
"I guess not."
"Try taking us outside." Tait says excitedly, "If we can't tell immediately, surely we can eliminate a few possibilities."
"That's the first smart thing that has ever come out of your loud mouth." Selman says with a smile.
"Who wants to go with me?" I ask while standing up, "I don't think I can move all of us."
"I say Tait goes with you, after all, it was his idea." Selman says motion for Tait to join me.
"It would be an honor." Tait says proudly walking to my side, "To be the one to help the future Queen of Asgard discover her powers, I would say is the most honorable thing a man can do for his realm." He locks arms with me.
I playfully smack the back of his head, "Don't get ahead of yourself, Tait."
He looks at me, with blue eyes.
"Tait, your eyes." I say, pointing out the obvious, Tait has light brown eyes- or he should. The whites of his eyes turn black for a moment, shining at me. I drop his arm and back away.
"Raoul..."
"Don't ask me! You did it!" He shouts in alarm, seeing the unnatural eyes of our friend.
"I don't know what I did!"
A sudden rush of adrenaline hits me, causing me to stumble. I catch myself. Tait looks at me blankly, his expression plain. I know that he's in there, that he is just as confused as I am. His eyes still glow blue. I pull the stone from my pocket and look at it.
It is the same blue as his eyes.
"Raoul, I think I know which stone I have."
He looks at me with confusion until I show him the stone next to Tait's eyes, "Any ideas on how to let him go?"
"I figure that he's a slave to your mind. Any slave would run the second you say they can go-"
"Tait, I'm letting you go. You're free."
He doesn't react.
"Maybe you can smack him out of it." Selman says, "I mean- you did smack him into it."
"And maybe it would make it worse."
"Fine, I'll do it myself." Selman says, giving him a good smack to the head.
Tait falls to the floor. We all rush to him, flipping him onto his back. He grumbles a bit and hesitantly opens his eyes, "Did it work?"
"Depends on your definition of 'work'." I mutter.
I sit in my room alone. I possessed my friend- the one with the mental abilities of a toddler. I didn't even try.
There's a slight knock on my door.
"It's open."
The door creaks open and Father Steps in, "I heard about what happened."
"Of course you did."
"It's not a bad thing- what you did."
"Yeah, you're not the one who took over your friend's body and mind." I growl.
"Ivanna, it was an accident. You had no harmful intensions."
"That doesn't justify my actions!"
"I understand, you're angry, probably scared, but what you did was an accident. All you need to do is control it. Control is everything with power." He says, sitting on the edge of my bed, "When I first held Mjolnir it stormed for an entire week. I panicked; I was scared of the consequences. I learned how to control my power and now I am able to use it to my advantage."
He's right, I need to learn how to control my power- the stone's power- whatever. How would I use this power? The power to possess others, when could I possibly use that to my advantage? Perhaps keeping the Stone from falling into the wrong hands is all I have to do.
"How can I control this?" I ask, "Other than not touching people."
"I do not know, Ivanna, but we can figure it out." He says, "We won't give up anytime soon. But you can't lose confidence- that will surely keep you from what you need to do."
I nod.
"Cheer up." He says, "I have a surprise for you."
"Not much of a surprise now that you've told me, now is it?"
He rolls his eyes and sets a long black staff in front of me. The polished black metal gleams. I carefully pick it up. The balance of the staff in my hands is perfect.
"It's beautiful." I gape.
"I'm glad you like it, I had it crafted for you. I was planning on presenting it to you when you initially returned, but that was a rather unpredictable situation."
"Yeah..." I am holding onto the beauty like a child to his mother's hand.
"What are you going to call it?" He asks.
"Name it?" I ask blankly.
"It is your weapon, is it not? The balance should be perfect, as well as any other aspect, so what are you going to call such a fine piece?"
"Delvameg." The name rolls off of my tongue.
The staff glows and the name inscribes itself onto the staff in the old language. The Stone hums in my pocket. I pull it out and it seems to pull itself loser to the staff. I press the Stone to the middle of the staff. I feel it sink in and the metal slowly locks the Stone in place.
"What to try Delvameg out?"
"Yes, I do."
"Let's go." He leads me to the training field.
"Alright Ivanna, let's not hurt each other."
"You know I fight to win."
"So be it." My Father says, spinning Mjolnir in his hand.
I ready Delvameg.
He takes an upward swing and I dodge it, letting the hammer graze my hair. I take a quick step and hit him in the stomach. He stumbles a bit but quickly corrects his path. He quickly turns and hits my shoulder with the hammer.
A loud crack splits through my reality. I stumble forward and grab my shoulder; it is definitely out of place. I take a deep breath and push it back. I quickly turn back and let the staff extend, hitting his ribs. I take another breath as he swings again. I step back as Mjolnir passes by my face.
We stand off again. I start by swinging at his collarbone. Delvameg changes quickly. The round staff quickly flattens itself and turns into a sword, the balance changing, but remaining perfect. Luckily, he blocks it.
I hold the sword out for a moment; how did it change?
Father notices my distraction, "Don't get too caught up in the moment."
"What else can it do?" I ask.
"I don't know, let's find out."
We quickly start fighting again. I step forward and chop at his arm; it hits and breaks through the armor. He throws Mjolnir, sending it right for my chest. I quickly pull Delvameg up and I feel it change again. The weapons clash, pushing me back: pulling the ground up where my feet slide across it.
Mjolnir retreats back to my Father's hand, and I pull back an arrow. The arrow is composed of blue energy and is ready to fire. A long bow rests in my hands, composed of the same metal as my staff.
"Are we done?" I ask.
"Are we?"
"I would say so." I relax the bow and the arrow disappears. Delvameg slowly reshapes back into the staff.
I notice a small group of people watching us. I turn to them and take a sarcastic bow. My Father and I turn away and head back inside the palace.
"You can't blame them." He says, "It's not every day that you see two people of our caliber fight."
"I can do as I please, thank you. It's just that I shouldn't."
"That is no way to speak to the New King of Asgard." He says.
"You're not King yet."
"But I shall be in the week."
Everything stops around me. He's going to be King within the week. My Father will be King. That will make me the protector of the Nine Realms. Not only will it promote him, it will promote me as well.
"I can see you putting all the pieces together." He says.
"I am going to take your place as protector, aren't I?"
"Yes, but do not worry, it's an honorable position to have."
"I'm not worried about honor."
"Then what are you worried about?" He asks.
"Uh- I- Nothing, I guess."
"You should start eating with the rest of your family instead of your friends, just so you can remain informed."
I nod, "I agree, that would be a good idea."
"I shall see you for dinner, Ivanna." My Father says, walking in the opposite direction of my path.
I head down to Tait's room, I need to see if the idiot's okay. I softly knock on the door as I open it.
"You're supposed to wait for an answer." A dazed voice says.
"I just wanted to check on you, make sure you're okay."
"Yeah," He mumbles from his bed, "Just tired."
"Okay, I'll let you sleep." I say, turning around.
"Ivanna, wait."
"What?"
"You have some really dark thoughts."
"What do you mean?" I snap.
"When you possessed me or whatever- I'm not mad about that, just so you know- I saw some really dark things in your head."
I shake my head in disbelief, "You saw what I was thinking?"
"Well, yeah- kind of, I could see some really upsetting memories, some of which I don't believe belong to you."
"Tell me what you saw."
"Well, I remember when your dog ran away." He says, "And how you knew that he didn't really run away- but you were really hoping that he did."
I roll my eyes, "You were there for that."
"Yeah, but it felt different this time."
"What else did you see?"
"When you broke your arm falling off your horse-"
"You were there for that too."
"Okay, but I saw someone murder their entire family."
The words hit m square in the chest, "You know that wasn't my memory."
"Then how did I see it?" He asks.
"I don't know, Tait. But you can't tell anyone what you saw."
"Why not?"
"Just trust me on this one, okay?"
"I don't think I get a choice when it comes to trusting you." Tait says with a smile.
"You're damn right you don't." I say, leaving the room.
