Chapter 7 - The First Trace

Waiting had lasted long enough.

For years, Adrian convinced himself that time would dull the memory, that success would bury the past beneath something more important. It never did. The silence only sharpened it.

So he stopped waiting.

The search began quietly. No announcements, no reckless moves. He had the resources now, the influence, the patience to look where others couldn't.

Old records. University files. Alumni lists. Addresses that no longer existed. Names that led nowhere.

Every lead ended in the same empty answer.

Elara was gone.

Anyone else would have accepted it. Anyone else would have moved on, called it coincidence, called it fate.

Adrian didn't believe in either.

Weeks turned into months of searching. He followed fragments of information the way a hunter follows faint tracks in the dark, never rushing, never losing focus.

Then one evening, something changed.

A name appeared in a file he almost ignored.

Not her name.

But a connection.

A research institute listed in an old academic record. A transfer request filed years ago. No explanation, no details, just a location that had never been mentioned before.

His fingers stopped moving on the screen.

For the first time in years, the silence cracked.

He read the line again. And again.

A slow smile touched his lips, faint, controlled, but colder than anything he had felt in a long time.

"So you didn't disappear..."
His voice was barely above a whisper in the empty office.

"You just hid."

He leaned back in his chair, eyes fixed on the glowing city outside the glass wall. The lights stretched endlessly, but his world had narrowed to a single point.

A place.
A clue.
A direction.

All these years, the distance between them had only made the pull stronger.

People thought time erased things.

It didn't.

It preserved them.

Refined them.

Turned them into something far more dangerous.

His fingers tapped slowly against the desk, the rhythm steady, controlled, patient.

"I looked for you once," he murmured quietly.

His eyes darkened, the faint smile fading into something sharper.

"This time..."

He stood, picking up the file without hesitation.

"This time I won't stop until I find you."
