Girl on Fire

Instead of talking to Cato about our kiss, I jump off of the chariot and search to find the girl on fire. I finally am able to push my way through all of the other tributes crowded around in the back of the building and I stand behind the girl.

"Hi." I say as sweetly as possible. She turns around, her chocolate brown hair in an intricate braid updo. Her appearance is sharp and intimidating. Her narrow eyes land on. Her fire is gone but she is still glowing. I smile and wait for her to say something. She just frowns down at me. My smile fades.

"I'm Clove. And you are?"

"Katniss Everdeen." The boy from her district answers for her. She looks at him, clearly aggravated. He's a medium built, dirt blonde boy with soft puppy dog eyes. He doesn't intimidate me whatsoever, he seems nice actually.

"Sorry about her, she isn't good at making friends." He says. He's friendly to me. Maybe a possible ally?

"Or smiling, apparently." I say sarcastically. He smiles at me, humored by my remark.

"Hey, you ran off." Cato walks up behind me.

"Sorry. I just wanted to meet Katniss, and..." I say stuttering, gesturing to the boy.

"Peeta. Peeta Mellark." Katniss says, shooting a snobby look towards her partner. This is the first time I've heard her say anything.

"I'm Cato Had- . . . Cato, my name is Cato." He almost says his last name but clearly avoided it. Maybe he sees the two District 12 tributes as a threat to him. I don't know why though. Twelve never wins. Better safe than sorry I guess. Katniss and I exchange a glance but she looks away, avoiding me. I'm trying to be as nice as possible so I could make ally's easier, but it doesn't seem to work with Katniss.

"What happened to your forehead?" Katniss asks Cato, breaking the ice.

"Oh, a stupid Capital woman." Cato laughs a little.

"So, see you at the training center tomorrow?" Peeta inquires, changing the subject.

"Do we really have a choice?" I ask. Peeta laughs and Katniss walks away in a fit, he follows after like a lost puppy.

"Ally?" I ask Cato, referring to the two tributes.

"Ehh, maybe. We will decide tomorrow once we see their skills. Since we are Careers, we automatically have an alliance with 1. Uhh, over there." He points over to a blonde female and thin male in pink costumes.

"Really? That's our alliance? He is wearing pink feathers. And a blonde? I bet she has the brain of a squirrel." I say, clearly very underwhelmed by our automatic ally's.

"Clover." Cato says angrily, gritting his teeth. He does this when I get sassy towards him.

"What?" I ask still staring at the District 1 tributes.

"I'm a blonde."

My mouth falls open. I turn around slowly to face him.

"Uhh. I didn't mean that. I uhh, I think you're pretty smart." I'm trying to take back my rude comment about blondes. It's not him, it's the girls who I stereotypically assume are dumb.

"Really? Do you think I'm pretty or do you think I'm smart? Huh?" He crosses his arms and grins at me.

"More pretty." I smile and he does too. He wraps his arms around me and picks me up, crushing my arms to my side. We are both laughing like children and he kisses my cheek.

"Ya know, I always liked you, Clove Kentwell." He sets me down back onto my feet.

"Yeah, I know." He grabs my hand and walks me to our floor. He lets me in first and I walk to my bedroom, he follows. I open my room door and turn around to close it when my eyes are met by Cato, leaning against the door frame. Wow. That is sexy.

"Goodnight, Clover." He smirks.

"Goodnight, Cato." As I shut the door he yells:

"Oh, and take off that costume! You look ridiculous!" I laugh and close the door. I take a deep breath and fall back into my bed, and before I knew it I fell into a deep sleep.
