Kimi's POV
I woke up the next morning with a jump. The strong smell of grilled fish and rice filled the air and reminded me that I had spent the night in the Todoroki household. The air was crisp but the homely scent made my muscles relax and for a moment the world was perfectly peaceful.
"I love you, bitch. I ain't never gonna stop lovin' you, bitch." Peanut squawked from his cage beside the bed. Peace doesn't last forever when you have a parrot.
"Hi baby, I love you too" I cooed letting him out and stroking his feathered head which nuzzled into my touch. I perched him on my shoulder and made the bed before entering the kitchen to be greeted by an overly enthusiastic Fuyumi making breakfast.
"Morning Kimi! Did you sleep well? I'm almost finished here and I've made Peanut some breakfast in that bowl over there. He still likes mango right?" She asked with a smile checking on the rice cooker. Her hair stuck to her face with a small shimmer of sweat from the hot stove, the red streaks looking darker and contrasting sharply with her over all snowy tresses.
"Morning, yeah it was great. Thanks again for letting me stay. And for feeding my feathered baby." I said with a lazy smile still trying to wake up properly.
"Eww is that what you are calling Hawks now? I didn't need to know that." Came a monotone voice from behind me. I spun around to be met with a sleepy Shoto in an oversized white t-shirt. Unlike Fuyumi, who was dressed and ready to go about her day, Shoto's hair that normally fell over his forehead was pinned back whilst his hair at the back stuck up in random directions.
"Well don't you look presentable" I mocked poking his exposed forehead. "And I was talking about Peanut and you know it!" I laughed as Shoto let out a muffled sigh. Upon hearing his name Peanut looked up and flew to Shoto resting on his shoulder and rubbing his face against Shoto's cheek lovingly.
"Good morning Peanut" Shoto mumbled with a rare smile.
"I didn't know you were staying over last night?" He questioned still distracted by the hyperactive parrot.
"Yeah there was an incident outside my apartment and the police thought it would be best for me to stay somewhere else given the break-in before." I said as I set the table, purposefully leaving out any details about the possibility of Touya's involvement.
"Are you okay?" He asked, his eyes widening at the news.
"Yeah, I'm fine, don't worry Sho! On the bright side you get to walk to school with me!" I chuckle as I thank Fuyumi and start to tuck into the delicious breakfast.
The morning routine flew by quickly before a thought popped into my head. Hawks was going to be waiting for me to walk to the station. I grabbed my phone and dialed his number in the hope that I wasn't too late.
He answered on the second ring with a cheerful greeting.
"Morning Babybird! You in desperate need to hear my voice? I'll be there in 10 minutes!" He chuckled. Damn his voice sounds so good even through the phone.
"Umm it's actually about that. I stayed at a friends house last night so won't be there. I'm so sorry, it was last minute and I totally forgot to tell you until just now!" I said, nervously playing with a strand of my hair. I know that my apartment is somewhat out of the way and felt bad enough that he walked me to the station everyday.
"Hey hey, don't worry about it! Is everything okay? You sound kind of panicked. You aren't hurt are you?" He asked sounding concerned.
"No, I'm fine really. There was a bit of an incident last night and the police wanted me to stay with a friend." I mumble out feeling slightly awkward. I hadn't told him about my apartment being broken into just because nothing came from it and I didn't want to look like some over-panicked girl who needed to phone her mom as soon as something went wrong. Even though that is definitely what I was.
"Oh my God! Baby why didn't you tell me?" He asked, his voice growing louder with worry. Hearing him call me baby made me feel giddy, which probably wasn't appropriate given our current conversation but none the less I couldn't help but smile.
"I dunno I just didn't want to make a big deal out of it" I mutter my heart beating faster by how much he cared.
"Well, are you free after work? We can get dinner and you can tell me all about it?" He asked sounding hopeful.
"Yeah, I'd love that! Meet me outside UA at 4pm?"
"Sounds perfect, I'll see you then Babybird!" He calls through the phone.
"See you then Keigo" I smile hanging up and skipping into the hallway to meet Shoto and start our journey to UA.
*** Time Skip ***
The day passed by quickly. Once again I spent my lunch break with Shoto as he told me about the upcoming sports festival.
I told him what happened last night, purposefully leaving out my suspicions that the stranger may have been Touya. Shoto was always so close with Touya, I didn't want to get his hopes up or ruin his memories of his big brother.
Eventually 4PM came and a wave of nerves washed over me. Would he be annoyed that I forgot to tell him until this morning or that I didn't tell him about the break-in? Is now the right time to start asking him about his past? These thoughts paraded across my mind before being broken by a hand waving in front of my face.
"You in there Babybird? I've been calling you for about a minute now," Hawks said with a small smile, concern clearly evident upon his face.
"Hey, yeah sorry I'm just a bit distracted but I'm fine" I smile taking his hand in mine and walking slowly towards the coffee shop we went to before. The walk there was filled with calming conversations of 'how was your day?' but the questions of what happened last night hung in the air around us.
We made it to the cafe and got our drinks quickly before an awkward silence overcame us, our fingers still interlocked as Keigo rubbed calming circles on the back of my palm with his thumb.
"So, what happened last night Babybird? Whatever it is you can tell me." He said with a determined nod. His voice was hushed but strong making me feel both calm and nervous. I took a deep breath and began to re-tell the events of the previous night. I told him about the break in and the unease that I had felt over everything and when I was finished he remained silent, avoiding my eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me about this earlier?" He asked giving my hand a tight squeeze from across the small circular table.
"I don't know ... I just didn't want to be a bother I suppose" I say awkwardly, gazing around the warmly lit cafe.
"You could never be a bother Babybird. Are you staying with your friend again?" He asked finally meeting my eyes whilst continuing to stroke my hand. For a moment I got lost in the liquid gold of his eyes, my mouth going dry.
"No, she left my things back at my place. The police are keeping an eye on my apartment so it'll be fine." I awkwardly rub the back of my head feeling somewhat vulnerable under his intense gaze.
"You can stay with me if you want?" He asks hopefully with a small smile. I suck in a small breath of air. Stay with Keigo? The thoughts of him with messy bed hair and a husky morning voice fill my mind and I can feel myself blush.
"N-no don't worry about it really! I'll be fine." I stutter out.
"I promise I won't try anything Babybird, I'm a gentleman afterall!" He smiles with a small chuckle.
"Really, it's okay, but thank you for being so sweet." I smile back squeezing his hand reassuringly.
"Okay, but I am going to walk you to and from work okay? I don't want anything like this happening again. I'll have my agency link up with the police about what happened last night and see if we can get any leads."
"T-that would be amazing. Thank you so much!" I smile shifting my chair closer to give him a tight hug. I honestly don't know how I got this lucky. I've known Keigo for a matter of months and already I feel so at ease with him. But yet again the words of Recovery Girl float back in my mind. I don't know a lot about him.
"Of course. If anything like this happens again, you'll tell me right away, okay?" He asks petting my head softly before I pull away from the hug with a small grin.
"Deal" I say holding out my pinky with a determined look. Keigo chuckles before wrapping my pinky finger with his own and moving our hands up and down like a hand shake.
"Oh before I forget I got your prize!" Keigo cheered pulling out a dark purple gift bag from behind him. Where was he keeping that and how did I not notice? The bag was a deep violet with silver vine designs swirling around it like ripples on water.
"Thanks Hawks! I honestly forgot we even ... oh God why?" I laugh with a loud snort as I remove the book from the bag only to see it was entitled 'The Little Book of Kama Sutra' with a rather R-rated cartoon image on the front cover.
"Just giving us some ideas for the future Babybird. Besides I heard it's a good read!" He laughs as I hide my face in my scarf with embarrassment and put the book back in the bag before anyone could see it.
"You really are something else, you know!" I chuckle watching him wiggle his eyebrows up and down with a goofy smile on his face.
"Hey at least it made you laugh!" He said gently taking my hand and pressing it to his lips with a small smile. My heart thumped hard at the simple contact and I once again reflected on the power he held over me. The smallest of actions sent sparks through my skin and he knew it. He then reached behind him and plucked out a small lilac book no bigger than his palm. Seriously where is he storing these books?!
"I was just kidding with the Kama Sutra book by the way. Here, this is the book I actually planned on getting you."
I reached out hesitantly and looked at the title feeling a small smile stretch across my face.
'The Little Book of Love Poems' it read in beautiful gold cursive. I opened it up to find an incredibly messy hand written note.
'To my Babybird, the only girl who gets my heart racing
~ Keigo xx'
I looked up at him only to see a faint blush dance across his cheeks watching me read his personal note.
"I love it, thanks so much!" I smile pulling him into yet another tight hug.
"If I knew you'd react to a book like this I would have brought you to the library!" Keigo laughs, his breath hot against the outer shell of my ear.
"There is actually something I wanted to ask you." I say, awkwardly rubbing my head. Damn why am I making this so awkward.
"Is this you asking me to be your boyfriend Babybird?" He teased getting close to my face with that cocky grin of his.
"No! I mean, not that you being my boyfriend would be a bad thing but I just ... I wanted to get to know you better." I say quickly trying to not insult him whilst getting my point across. My palms began to sweat as he tilted his head blankly before that smug grin returned.
"You want to try out the demonstrations from the first book huh? Well, I'm not opposed to it but I was hoping for us to be official before then." He chuckled watching my face turn red in embarrassment.
"Not like that! I mean get to know you better. Like your family, where you grew up, went to school. All that kind of stuff."
Keigo looked slightly taken back. His eyes widened by a fraction before they returned to their original sharp angle. Was this a normal reaction? He is normally so confident but appears this nervous when asked to talk about himself? Recovery Girl's words played in my mind and I grew convinced that he was hiding something from me.
"Babybird I-" he cut himself off and looked in my eyes before releasing a deflated sigh.
"I don't like talking about my personal life all that much. But I suppose you're apart of my personal life now. You'll find out eventually so how about we agree that on our next date you can ask me anything you want and I'll answer it." He smiled his voice sounding more quiet than normal, as though voicing this meant it was written in stone and he was convincing himself to stand by it.
"That sounds good ... Birdbrain" I say trying to ease the tension.
***Time skip***
The rest of the evening went smoothly. I tried to avoid bringing up his past and family life, though he enjoyed informing me that he had spotted my mom watching him from the window when he had picked me up at Halloween. This came as no surprise and I could just imagine her scrolling through hero feeds to try and figure out who he was.
Keigo as promised walked me home, keeping a sharp eye on the area surrounding my apartment but felt happier once he spotted a police car parked across the street.
"If anything happens you call me, okay Babybird? Even if you think it's something silly just call me and I'll be there." He said in a worried tone, his hands placed firmly on my shoulders. I stared up into his honey eyes and smiled softly. I know so little about his background, but I do know that he's good person.
"I will, thanks Keigo." I said giving him a kiss on the cheek and watching his feathers puff up at the contact. So. Cute. I internally fangirl.
"Goodnight!" I smile watching him let out a flustered 'goodnight' before I disappeared into my home, a small smile still plastered on my face.
