After the group of four arrived at Dolle Harbor, Gon was called over by the captain while the other three waited for Gon as they were looking at the map.
"Guys! Guess what?" Gon's voice filled the area around the three of them, "The captain gave me a hint on where we should go!"
The gang's eyebrows lift in surprise, as they looked down at Gon. Gon gave out the information he was given, once finished the group started to think which way where they should go.
"Huh...That's strange.." Leorio spoke up, grabbing the attention of the other three.
"Why?" Gon asked, tilting his head.
"According to the note I received, the exam is supposedly held at Zaban City. Right now we're here." Leorio pointed where they were on the map, "The tree is the opposite direction."
"Perhaps you misheard him?" Kurapika implied arms crossed as he looked at Gon with a questioning expression on his face.
"No," Gon responded as he shook his head. "He told me to head to head towards that cedar tree."
Kurapika stares at him for a moment before speaking up, "I see..."
"And this notice isn't any help!" Leorio complained, "Where exactly in Zaban City are we meant to go?"
"Our task is to find the exam site, using limited information," Kurapika stated.
"Just another test before we're allowed to take the Hunter's Exam." [Y/N] emotionlessly added.
"I-I...knew that," Leorio grumbled.
"Anyways, I'll go have a look. The captain must have a reason to suggest that." Gon said as he started to walk towards the cedar tree. [Y/N] decided to follow Gon.
"Hey...hey! You're serious?! The bus to Zaban is about to leave. We should take it!" Leorio shouted, pointing at the bus.
Gon and [Y/N] ignored him and started walking. Of course, Leorio kept calling out to them but the duo ignored him. Gon looked over at [Y/N] before asking, "Do you think the other two will follow us?"
[Y/N] simply shrugged, "Maybe."
"Wait for me!" Kurapika rushed over to [Y/N]'s side, "I'm going with you both." He said.
[Y/N] hummed and asked, "Why did you decide to follow the both of us?"
Kurapika just gave her a small smile, "I'm interested in both yours and Gon's behavior than the captain's advice. That's why I decided to follow you two," He responded.
[Y/N] simply stared at him before shrugging and coldly saying "If you say so,"
"Wait, wait, wait!!" Leorio calls out to them as he rushes to their side, "Wait for me!!"
He soon joined the group and [Y/N] asked Leorio the same question to him and his reply was, "It's just-I knew you guys would be lonely without me, plus it's no fun traveling alone!"
[Y/N] took out her book from the pocket of her coat, and starts to read it. She looked back once more, 'He's still following us.'
Time Skip
The group soon arrives at a small deserted town. The three scan their surroundings while [Y/N] looked up from her book and then searches her surroundings too.
"This is a creepy place..." Leorio muttered.
Gon shook his head, "There are a lot of people here" Gon stated.
Right on cue, two doors on the left opened up, which revealed a group of masked people appear and block the path with a stage where an old woman sits.
"W-What's with the freak show?" Leorio muttered.
"Exciting...." The old woman mumbled.
"E-Exciting?" Leorio repeated in confusion.
"Exciting..." The old woman repeated.
"Exciting?" Leorio gulped.
The old woman suddenly snapped her eyes wide open and announced loudly, "EXCITING TWO-CHOICE QUIZ!!" Then the masked people played their instruments to add a dramatic effect. The four of them were taken aback. "You four are headed for that cedar tree on the hill right?" The old woman asked but none of them answered but the old woman continued anyways, "To reach that tree you must pass through this town. The quiz is made of one question and your answer will be the answer for your whole group. You will have 5 seconds to answer being either 1 or 2."
"Hey! What's going on here?!" Leorio interrupted but the old woman ignored him.
"You'll have 5 seconds to answer the question. Give the wrong answer and you are disqualified. You'll have to give on this year's Hunter Exam."
'I see, so this is how it works,' [Y/N] thought.
"I see... This is another trial to see if we can take the Hunter's Exam." Kurapika thought aloud, with a smirk on his face.
"Lucky us because I'm a pro at quizzes!" Leorio confidently said before a look of shock came onto his face, "Wait! One question!?"
"Your answer will either be 1 or 2. Any other answer will be incorrect."
"Hold on! All four of us share one question? So if one of them answered incorrectly, I'm disqualified too?" Leorio questioned.
"As if that would happen!" Kurapika retorted, "What scares me is the likelihood of the vice versa happening."
"What was that?" Leorio hissed.
Gon and [Y/N] just watch them fight back and forth, so Gon decided to break their argument.
"You know...This way is easier since only one of us needs to know the answer. I'm not good at quizzes." Gon admitted, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck.
"I suppose..."
"Fair point..."
"Hey, there. Hurry up." The four of them turn their attention to the stranger that's been following them. "Or I might answer the question."
"Who the hell are you!?" Leorio asked.
"You don't know?" Gon asked Leorio.
"He was trailing behind us the whole time," [Y/N] informed the male.
"Huh? Seriously!?" Leorio gasped in shock.
"Sorry kid, but I happened to overhear your conversation." The stranger 'apologized' to Gon.
"What will you do?" Everyone turned their attention to the old woman.
"He seems eager to take it. We should let him go first." Leorio stated just as a masked person brought in a red button for the man. "That way, we could see what type of question we can expect."
"I don't mind." Gon responded.
"I have no objection," Kurapika stated.
"No objections," [Y/N] added.
"Then I'll get to it," The man smirked at them.
"Here is your question. Evil villains have captured your mother and lover. You can only save one. Who do you save?"
The group was caught off guard by the question since it has no right answer. However, [Y/N] has already figured out the trick in this question.
'I see, so this is a trick question. There is no correct answer.' [Y/N] thought as she looked at the three males, hoping they figured it out already.
"H-How is that even a question!?" Leorio asked under his breath.
The stranger smirked as he pressed the red button, "The answer is 1" He confidently stated.
"Oh? Why do you say that?" The old woman asked with curiosity and interest.
"Because you only have one mother but you can always find another lover/" He answered casually.
"What!?" Leorio gasped at the response of the stranger.
"You may pass," The woman said. The other three males were taken back as the man grinned at them.
"You just need to tell her what she wants to hear. Adios!" The man then ran off towards the street.
That caused an uproar from Leorio, "Hey, now! That's bull! How was that the right answer!?" Leorio yelled as he was angry. Leorio clicked his tongue, "I won't put this sham. I'll find a different route." Right, when Leorio was about to leave the old woman spoke up.
"It's too late," Leorio looked back at the woman with a confused expression, "Refuse to take the quiz, and you are disqualified."
Leorio's shoulders started to tremble in anger, "That's ridiculous! Different people would answer differently!! There is no right answer!!"
Kurapika's eyes widened at the realization. Right when he was going to open his mouth the old woman shut him up.
"Not another word from you! Say anything and you are immediately disqualified." She said.
Kurapika gritted his teeth as he remained silent while [Y/N] narrowed her eyes at Leorio. 'Figure this out, Leorio...it's a simple trick.' She then looked at Gon, 'Gon..did you figure it out?'
"Here is your question. Your son and daughter have been kidnapped. Who do you rescue? Select 1 for your daughter, 2 for your son."
'She's making fun of us...!' Leorio mentally growled.
"Five."
[Y/N] watches Leorio walking to the side and picks up a wooden stick.
"Four."
Leorio swung the wooden stick in the air as [Y/N] slowly started placing her book in her coat's pocket.
"Three. Two. One. Buzz! Your time is up." The old woman announced right as Leorio raised his stick ready to attack her.
In a blink of an eye, the stick was blocked. The three males were shocked to see [Y/N] move at a fast velocity and block the wooden stick with her arm, even more so as she didn't wince in pain.
'S-She's fast!' Kurapika noted, 'She just...blocked that stick with her arm..without wincing in pain either!'
"Don't stop me [Y/N]! I won't be satisfied until this old hag learns her lesson!" Leorio angrily yelled at the girl.
[Y/N] tried her best not to let out an irritated sigh and coldly stated, "Calm down, Leorio."
"How the hell am I supposed to calm down!?" Leorio angrily shouted.
"You'll waste our correct answer." [Y/N] simply said.
Leorio's eyes widened and blinked at her like an idiot, "Correct answer?" He repeated, very confused.
"We gave the right answer. Silence was the correct answer." [Y/N] explained.
"Silence? What do you mean...?" Leorio questioned.
"There is no answer." The girl stated.
"Exactly," Kurapika agreed with the girl, "The quiz has no right answer. But we could only state one or two as the answer. In other words, we weren't supposed to answer the question. Silence was our only option."
"Wait, what about that guy? He passed!" Leorio pressed.
"She never said he was right, all she said was you may pass." Kurapika pointed out, "That means that this path is not the real path to the Hunter Exam."
The old woman cracked a smile and stood out of her seat, "That's right, the real path is here." She walked to the side and slid two doors open. It was a dark pathway, the only thing illuminated was the light at the end of the pathway. "This directly leads to the tree. Walk two hours and you'll reach the top. There you will find a couple that lives there and will take you to the Hunter Exam." The old woman informed them.
Leorio dropped the wooden stick to the ground as he approached the old woman, "Gran, I'm sorry for my rudeness."
"Don't be. I don't mind. I do this job because I like meeting people like you," The response Leorio gets catches him off guard, "Be the best Hunter you can be." Leorio grinned sheepishly as he scratched his cheek.
Gon sighed deeply as the rest turned their attention to the young boy who just plopped onto the ground. "I can't think of an answer!"
"You've been trying to figure out this whole time?" Leorio asked while holding his chuckle.
"Gon, the quiz is already over." Kurapika informed Gon.
"I know. But what if...what if that really happens to me sometime in the future? What if I had to choose between two people and I could only save one of them? Who would I choose?" Gon questioned.
No one expected the seemingly naive boy to ask such a deep question, which is why everyone was left speechless, not knowing how to answer the young boy except for one.
"For situations like those, Gon," [Y/N] spoke up causing everyone to look at her, "You'll never know the answer until you're literally in that moment."
Kurapika was quite surprised that [Y/N] was able to provide an answer. The old woman nodded at the girl's acknowledgment.
'That's right. That's the true purpose of this test. You must be prepared to face the worst possible scenarios.'
The group said their farewells to the old woman and started walking down the pathway.
Two Long Hours later.
"It's dark out here..." Leorio mumbled as the group walked through the dark forest, searching for the Cedar tree. "She said walk two hours, well it was two hours ago!" He complained.
[Y/N] looked up from her book to see another 'Beware a Magical Beast' sign.
Leorio stands at her side and reads the sign before he sighs. "Another 'Beware of Magical Beast' sign? Are we ever going to make it to the exam site?" Leorio then started to complain, "I'm hungry! And I got to leak too!"
[Y/N] simply shook her head and spoke up, "Leorio, stop whining and we won't leave you behind."
"Oh look! It's the Cedar tree." Gon announced pointing to the tree on top of the hill.
The four started to quicken up their pace. Soon after the group arrives at the cabin. [Y/N] stepped out of the group and knocked on the door, she then opened it, which turned out to be unlocked, but they all stopped dead in their tracks. The couple that lived in the cabin was attacked by a Kikiro.
"It's a Magical Beast!" Leorio exclaimed as they got into a battle stance. Kurapika took out his wooden swords, and Gon took out his fishing rod.
"A Magical Beast?" Gon repeated.
"A transforming magical beast, Kikiro! It can take the form of a human there extremely intelligent!" Kurapika informed the group. The Kikiro turns to the group with a sly grin on his face as he's choking a woman in his arms.
"There's a woman in its arms!" Gon pointed out.
"And the guy on the floor needs medical attention..." Leorio stated, looking down at the injured man lying on the floor.
The Kikiro made a run for it, as so did [Y/N]. Kurapika called out to the girl but she simply ignored him as she's chasing the Kikiro. [Y/N] glanced behind her shoulder to see Gon and Kurapika right behind her. Since she saw no sign of Leorio, she just assumed that he's attending to the man's injuries. [Y/N] then glanced forward, her eyes on the faint shadow in the forest.
'She's really fast. [Y/N] and Gon can follow the faint shadow even through the dark forest. Impressive' Kurapika thought to himself.
Both Gon and [Y/N] catched up to the Kikiro as Gon demanded, "Kikiro! Let her go!"
"Take her if you can!" The Kikiro smirked at them as he quickened up his pace. Gon was caught off guard when he realized the Kikiro was able to talk.
"Oi!" The Kikiro looks up from where the voice comes on, only to be smacked in the head by [Y/N]'s katana, causing him to hiss in pain and accidentally drop the woman. Right when [Y/N] was going to catch the woman, Kurapika and Gon caught her instead. The Kikiro used this opportunity and starts running away from her, again. "I'll be going after him!" [Y/N] stated to them and continues to chase the Kikiro. [Y/N] looked to her side to see there was another Kikiro leading Gon away.
'Oh, I see where this is going.' [Y/N] thought to herself. She then spotted the Kikiro in the middle of a plain field, she landed on the ground and took a battle stance.
"You'll pay for what you did to me" The Kikiro hissed.
"Who is the other one that Gon is taking care of?" [Y/N] asked, catching the Kikiro off guard.
"..W-What do you mean...?" He slowly asked.
"I noticed that there's two of you. My guess is that the two are partners,-" [Y/N] was cut off when the Kikiro lunged at her, trying to attack her with his sharp claws. [Y/N] simply dodged, and gave the Kikiro a low sleep, causing it to land face-first onto the ground. The Kikiro grunts in pain as [Y/N] gives him a cold glare before she starts asking her question, "Is this part of the Hunter Exam, and are you one of the navigators?"
It was silent before the Kikiro burst out laughing, much to the girl's confusion. "I'm impressed, little girl. How did you know there was another one?" He asked.
"I saw her. She was leading Gon away while you tried to lead me away too. This must be a test, am I correct?"
The Kikiro stood there before bursting out in laughter again because they heard someone calling his name.
"Hey sweetheart! Come out here! You're gonna love this!"
"Well, it's time to go kid." The Kikiro lifted the girl up and they went back to the cabin.
"[Y/N]!" Gon exclaimed, causing Leorio and Kurapika to look up.
[Y/N] walked up to the rest of the group and Kurapika asked her, "Are you alright?"
[Y/N] shook her head and bluntly stated, "No."
The Kikiro's and 'couple' gathered in front of the cabin.
"How many years has it been since anyone's been able to tell us apart?" The deeper voiced Kikiro joked to his partner, earning confused looks from Kurapika and Leorio.
Leorio leaned to Kurapika and [Y/N] and asked, "Can you tell the difference?"
"No...not at all," Kurapika replied.
Right when [Y/N] was going to answer them Gon explained to both of them the physical difference between the two Kikiro's, but the two of them still stood there dumbfounded. The Kikiro's then explained that they were the group of navigators for the Hunter Exam. The daughter then began the process of explaining how they scored their group's capabilities that would allow them to take their Hunter Exam.
The daughter smiled at Kurapika, "Kurapika-dono, we made sure to give you the vaguest of hints to determine we weren't spouses. You only caught a glimpse of my tattoos, but you knew in this region, these tattoos are only worn by women who took a vow of chastity. You demonstrated that you're incredibly knowledgeable. Therefore, you pass!"
Kurapika let out a sigh of relief as Gon congratulated him while Leorio stiffened up.
"Leorio-dono," The Kikiro son started, "You, sir, unfortunately never realized my true identity. However, you dressed my wounds faster and more thoroughly than any doctor. Importantly, you demonstrated empathy and kindness by reassuring me my wife would be okay. It is clear to me that your kindness makes you worthy to take the Hunter's Exam. Thus you pass."
Leorio became flustered as he mumbled, "S-Stop it....it's embarrassing." Gon congratulated him with a smile plastered on his face.
"[Y/N[-dono," One of the Kikiro spoke up, "Your speed on foot is unhuman. Also, you caught on quickly that this was might have been a test. You are worthy of taking the Hunter Exam, therefore you pass!"
[Y/N] gave a nod of 'alright' before a smile came onto her lips. Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio congratulated her as they fist bump. Although [Y/N] was uncertain at first but gave in.
"And finally," The husband Kikiro announced, "Gon-dono, your superhuman physical abilities make you worthy of taking the Hunter Exam. Therefore you pass."
Gon grinned as he cheered, "Alright!"
"Now," The daughter and son transformed into their real form, "We'll take you to the Hunter Exam. "we'll take you to the Hunter Exam site, we'll arrive there by morning." The Kikiro carried us and started flying towards the Exam Site.
"Wow! Isn't it great that we all passed!?" Gon asks
