Chapter Five

I woke up in a bed I didn't remember in a room I'd never seen next to a man I didn't know. What is this? Where am I? Where's the crows that always caw outside my window? Where's my pajamas? Where's the familiar lighting from my windows?

I pushed myself up a bit, careful not to wake the man on which I'd been sleeping. But when I saw his face, he didn't seem like such a stranger after all... Sleep tousled black hair, a soft-featured face, and through his parted lips I could see the wide gap in his teeth.

What was his name? Gosh, why is it so hard to think in the mornings... Wait a minute... World leaders... Murder... Getting caugh... Taken to jail... No, not just jail... That's it! Superjail! And this is the Warden!

That was so much harder than it needed to be. Laying back down, I sighed quietly and listened to the Warden's steady heartbeat. He shifted closer, muttered something, and wrapped his arms around me. He then proceeded to snore like a pug.

Trying not to laugh, unable to stop a smile, I cuddled up to him and hid my face in his chest.

~~~
I didn't think I was tired enough to fall asleep again, but I must have, because when I was roughly jerked from bed I was also jerked awake. The face screen of the robot that had carried me here  displayed a red mad face and I grinned sheepishly. "Hi?"
It beeped.
"Well, excuse me princess."
The robot shook me.
"Wha...?" The Warden had finally woken up and I twisted myself awkwardly to look at him.
"Help, please."
He blinked, apparently unable to process what was in front of him. Then, "Jailbot! You put her down this instant!"
The robot beeped persuasively.
"Well... Be that as it may, she's allowed here."
"Beep beep beep."
"Yes, I know she's in your prisoner database."
"Beep beep."
"Yes, I know that too. Look, just consider her... 'The exception'."
Jailbot's face changed to a green smiley and it set me down gently.
"Oh thank goodness." I hastily straightened my robe- the only thing I wore- and gave the Warden a grateful glance. "Nice robot."
He grinned. "Isn't he? I built him myself you know." He hugged the robot. "My greatest creation~ Aside from Superjail, of course." The robot beeped happily. "Alright Jailbot, you can go."
The Warden shoo'd the bot away and it left obediently, closing the door behind it.
"Oh crap, I messed up." The Warden gave me an embarrassed look. "You wouldn't happen to know how to work my shower, would you?"
~~~
"I cannot believe you didn't know where the toilet was."

The Warden huffed and crossed his arms. "Well, I've never actually used it myself, Jailbot always does everything while I'm still half asleep."

"Gross." I poked the Warden on the cheek before running the brush through his hair one last time. "There. Done?"

He looked at himself in the mirror, eyes narrowed. He turned to look at me with a pleading expression. "Do you know how to shave?"

"Oh my gosh, Warden."

And so, I rifled through his things until I found the shaving cream and a razor. "Sit still." I turned his chair so he was facing me and put my hand under his chin, tipping his head up. "It begins..." I muttered, rubbing the cream on his face. He then proceeded to try and lick it off.

"No, Warden, don't eat the shaving cream."

"Bleh! That tastes bad!"

"Of course it does!"

Exasperated and wishing for my own shower, I nonetheless tipped his head back up and drug the razor over his skin, barely breathing, careful not to cut him. Some places were harder than others, the curve of his jaw, by his nose, just at his cheekbones, and near his throat. With his head tipped up like it was I could see the faint pulse of his lifeblood flowing through his veins.

There was a wet heat running down my arm and I looked down, confused. Blood. Blood everywhere, it's on my hands, my clothes, oh no, please no, not this, not him. Uncle Billy seemed as confused as I was, looking down at the gash on his stomach, then to the blood on my hands, the razor I still held.

"(Y/N)?"

I screamed and dropped the bloodless razor, staggering back, expecting to slip on the blood that surely must be covering the floor, because there was so much of it, so much.

"(Y/N)!"

The voice wasn't Uncle's, wasn't Pa's, it was Warden, the Warden was the one in front of me. He was on his knees, shaking me by the shoulders and I wanted to tell him to stop but I couldn't seem to stop screaming. There wasn't any blood on him.

He grabbed me, held me close and I struggled to get free, but he just held me, trapping my arms against my sides. My throat hurt and I closed my mouth. My cheeks felt wet and I wondered when I'd started to cry.

I stopped struggling and the Warden let me go, a mix of confusion and worry on his face. "Um... Are you okay?"

I nodded even though I wasn't.

"You wanna talk about it?"

I shook my head.

"You want... Some milk?"

I smiled despite myself. "No, Warden."

He wrapped his arms around me. "Just hugs then."

"... Just hugs."

~~~
I walked through the prison at the Warden's side, head high, shoulders back. A kind of shame was lingering in my system, flickering brighter whenever I thought of the episode I had in the Warden's bathroom.
Seriously, how weak could I get? One flashback and I was a shivering ball of cowardice on the floor. I grit my teeth and glared ahead of me, daring, begging, someone to fight me. I needed to work off these lingering emotions.
"You seem tense." I looked towards the Warden when he spoke, turning in time to see his image flicker and for two more of him to appear. One grabbed my hand and patted the back of it affectionately, one gently rubbed my shoulders, and the last walked backwards in front of me, grinning before saying, "Do you wanna go set someone on fire?"
I considered it. "Sure."
-The Warden's P.O.V.-
I watched her set her firestorm in motion, the blaze surrounding her, flickering in her eyes like she was Hell itself.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone so perfectly beautiful.
Almost melting from the warm feeling in my chest, no doubt heart-eyed, I smiled as she stuck another match and flicked it through the flames. It went through the wall of fire, landing on the last place left unburned. The men seeking refuge there screamed and I felt my smile widen into a grin. She really is something else.
There was a stir down below and I rubbed my legs together uncomfortably. Uhg. Maybe I should get different pants or something.
"Warden!"
She called my name and I tried to hide the shiver of happiness that went through me. I like the way she says my name...
"Yes?" I sat up straighter, meeting her eyes over the fire. Those pretty (E/C) eyes.
She offered her hand and I grinned. I stood up from my place on the steps and, with a running start, leapt through the flames, landing safely at this fire goddess' side. I took her hand, wishing briefly that I'd taken my gloves off first.
I put my other hand on her waist, pulled her against me, and tried for a charming smile. "May I have this dance?"
She laughed and nodded, laying her free hand on my shoulder. "You may."
With nothing but the roar of the flames for music, we danced amid the destruction. As we went on we got closer together until my cheek was pressed against hers, her every breath brushing warmly against my skin.
"Oh, (Y/N)," I murmured, just loud enough for her to hear. "How I love your insanity."
