1 year later...
It had been just under a year, Reki had opened back up quite a bit and started skating again. His parents had fought more recently and they had yelled all night. He was exhausted, emotionally and physically.
He was listening to a lecture with his head down on his desk when he heard the door open. The teacher paused and began to talk about something else.
"Ah yes! I forgot to mention that we are welcoming a new student, introduce yourself!" The teacher said enthusiastically.
"Hello. My name is Langa Hasegawa, I'm Canadian, but also half Japanese. I was born in Japan and moved back from Canada this year." The boy said. Reki lifted his head a bit, the boy had blue hair that fell around ear length. He was pretty.
"Ah yes you can sit by Reki." The teacher said, pointing to the exhausted red haired boy. Reki put his head back down and raised his hand up. He just wanted to sleep, he needed to cut down on the cigarettes.
The blue haired boy made his way to the back and sat down. They said nothing to eachother for the whole class. Langa couldn't help but notice the bandages wrapping one of the red haired boy's hands or the bandaids on his knees. He could see dried blood cracked around his knuckles.
Class ended and the red haired boy didn't get up. Everyone was starting to leave. Langa reached out to shake him awake, but someone from across the classroom stopped him.
"DONT TOUCH HIM OR YOU MIGHT CATCH THE GAY" Laughter ascended to the ceiling of the classroom, the words bounced off the walls and rang in Langa's ears.
"Being gay isn't something you can catch." He said and shook Reki a bit, "class is over. Wake up." Reki stirred, lifting up his head and pushing away his greasy red hair. He groaned and leaned back over a pounding headache engulphing his senses.
"What's wrong?" Langa asked, clearly concerned. "Just a headache." Reki said tiredly, "thanks for waking me up." He slowly got up and grabbed his bag. He wouldn't say it but he was about to pass out. He tried to remember the last time he drank water or ate something.
He wobbled, leaning against the wall for a moment, blatantly unaware that Langa was still standing right there, ready to catch him if he fell over.
Reki stood up and walked out the door, ignoring the fact that the edges of his vision blurry. Langa meant to ask his name, but he walked off too fast. He felt strangely drawn to the boy. He thought Reki was pretty.
Langa was silent as he went to his locker to grab some things, it was there he saw Reki again. He stared as he grabbed a skateboard out of his locker and hopped on, skating through the crowd like a total badass, flipping off anyone who protested.
Langa was wide eyed. He was gonna find him again if it was the last thing he did.
Reki skated off the campus, no one chasing him for skating where he wasn't supposed to this time. He lit a cigarette and stuck it in his mouth as he skated to the skate park. Today was just not his day.
Anger and sadness powered him as he threw away the butt of his cigarette into the grass and pushed off onto the smooth cement. He dropped into a bowl, picking up speed before gaining air on the other side. He ignored the fact that his pounding headache was drowning out all of his senses.
Black started to encase his vision and he bailed on a jump, falling out of the bowl. He landed on his feet before collapsing. He was stressed and exhausted. He hadn't been taking care of himself.
A few guys ran up to him. One guy took Reki's hand, pinching the skin on the back of his hand. It sagged back into place slowly. The guy pressed down on one of Reki's fingernails as well, waiting for the blood to return, "this bitch is dehydrated as fuck." He concluded.
"AYO DOES ANYONE HAVE AN EXTRA WATER? AND LIKE. FOOD OR SOMETHING." The guy yelled across the skate park.
Fortunately for Reki, a certain blue haired acquaintance was exploring his new neighborhood. He ran over to Reki, "Hey! What happened to him?" The guy looked up at him, "you know him?"
Langa shrugged, "kinda. We met earlier today." He pulled out a bottle of water as Reki started to open his eyes, "holy shit." He said.
Langa laughed a bit. He was used to hearing people cuss in English, not Japanese. He pulled out a bottle of water from his backpack and handed it to Reki. Reki tried to sit up but was hit with a wave of dizziness.
"Dude if I sit up I will literally pass the fuck out." Reki cursed. The stranger helped him sit up slowly, "dude when was the last time you ate something." Reki shook his head, taking a gulp of the water.
He took a minute to think, "that's a good question." Reki said. He finished the water bottle in silence, not commenting on Langa's presence for a while.
"Why are you here Langa? Do you skate?" Reki said after a while. Langa shook his head, "no I was walking around and then I saw you passed out." Reki laughed a little, "you were just walking around?"
Langa laughed a bit, "I was trying to get to know the area." Reki smiled a bit, "wanna learn to skate?"
"Me??" Langa said, looking around. Reki laughed, "yeah you who else would I be talking to?" He stood up, grabbing his board in the process.
Langa started to stand up as well, but Reki told him to stay. "Watch this!" He called. He skated towards Langa.
The blue haired boy's eyes went wide in fear. His mouth dropped in amazement as Reki ollied over him, gaining air as his smile glittered in the setting sun. Langa felt his heart skip a beat in his chest.
Reki landed on the other side of Langa with a grin. Langa turned over to look at Reki, "what was your name again?" He asked, admiration in his eyes.
"Reki. Reki Kyan. You're Langa right?" Reki asked. Langa nodded, "yeah. Do you wanna go to my house for dinner?" Langa asked.
Reki looked at him seriously, "you're for real?" Langa laughed, "yeah?" Reki stood there for a minute in thought, he noticed his shaky hands. He hadn't eaten in days. He thought of his sister's at home, who had had it as rough as he had and might be at home with his parents right now.
Reki ran his hand through his hair. He was in desperate need of a shower.
"I'll pass. I gotta get home to my sisters." Reki said. Langa looked a bit disappointed, "okay okay. Make sure to eat something."
Reki nodded a little, hopping on his board after grabbing his stuff, "thanks. Seeya"
As Reki skated up to his house he could hear his parents yelling. He took in a deep breath and went around the back to the garage and went inside from there. The house was a mess, shattered beer bottles were in the middle of the hallway and the screaming didn't cease.
He snuck around the corner and into his sister's rooms. He found his older younger sister hugging the twins. He could tell she was trying her best to comfort the crying twins without crying herself.
Reki closed the bedroom door quietly and wrapped them all in a hug. His sister began to cry in his arms. They were just as tired and miserable as him.
"It's gonna be okay. How does so McDonald's sound hm? Do you guys want McDonald's?" The 3 sobbing girls in his arms nodded.
"Okay. Let's get some McDonald's then hm? The car is in the garage. I know it's loud but we can do it right?" Reki asked the teary eyed girls. They nodded, smiling while wiping their tears.
"Okay. You guys go out to the garage and I'll go grab my money okay?" Reki said. He listened closely for the door to click closed before he made the journey across the house and past his parents to his bedroom.
He made it to his bedroom and got the money. As he was walking back he was grabbed by the collar and shoved into a wall. His head hit the wall hard. The noise from his dad's screaming and his mom's crying and pleading was overwhelming.
His dad was threatening his mom and before he knew it the threats came true. He was restrained by the collar of his shirt and punched in the eye and in the nose.
His eye was swollen and his nose was bleeding, his eyes reflexively tearing up. He felt the pressure on his neck release and he kicked off, running towards the garage door as his mom yelled after him and his dad yelled at his mom.
He hopped in the car, tearing off his sweatshirt and holding it to his nose as he shoved the key in the ignition. His dad would kill him if he got blood stains on the interior of his car. Reki pulled out of the garage and out into the street.
His eye was swollen and bruised and his nose would not for the life of him stop bleeding.
"Okay we need to make a quick pit stop at my work real quickly okay?" Reki said, his voice unsteady and stuffy. He ran into the front door of the shop, his manager, Oka, was at his side almost immediatly.
"Reki what happened!?" Oka exclaimed, immediatly ushering Reki to the back of the shop.
"I just need something to make my nose stop bleeding so my eyes will stop watering and I can drive, I'm getting my sister's McDonalds." Reki said. Oka could tell he was holding back real tears.
The manager pulled the kid into a hug, where he immediately started sobbing. "Oka it hurts." Reki gripped the sweatshirt he was still holding to his nose as the manager hugged him.
Oka shook his head, "you can't drive like this, Reki. Let me get you some bandages or gauze or something I don't know."
"They are hungry, Oka. They havnt had a good meal in a long time, I havnt eaten in days. I just wanna get us some freaking McDonalds." Reki cried.
"I'll drive you and I'll buy it okay? Let me get you fixed up first." Oka said.
They managed to find some gauze and wrap up his nose and treat his eye, which was swollen shut.
Reki walked back to the car, Oka by his side, with a bandage over his eye and a towel held to his (at least fractured) nose. He hopped in the passengers seat, letting Oka drive.
"Okay guys this is my manager Mr. Oka!" Reki said.
"You guys can call me Oka." Oka said.
"Okay. This is Oka! He's gonna drive us to McDonalds so you can get some good food in your stomachs. Sound like a plan?" Reki said.
One of the twins spoke up, "Mr. Oka is Reki gonna get food this time too?" Oka nodded, "of course. We'll get your brother a nice burger, sound good Reki?" Reki nodded in response.
After a few more minutes of driving the arrived at the McDonalds. Oka bought them all meals, the employees side eyed Reki. He looked tough with his bandages, bloody nose, and scraped knuckles and knees.
Reki unwrapped his burger and ate the whole thing in under two minutes, downing his drink as well. He felt full as he slowed down on his fries.
The girls were also starving, downing their meals quickly, the twins slightly preoccupied with their happy meal toys.
"Hungry Reki?" Oka laughed. Reki smiled, content. "I think I ate too fast." Reki said, patting his stomach.
As Oka was driving them back to the shop, Reki tugged on Oka's sleeve, "pull over."
"What? Why?" Oka said as he slowed down and pulled to the side of the road. Reki hopped out of the car and closed the door behind him, throwing up into the grass on the side of the road. He turned away from the car so his sister's wouldn't have to watch him vomit up his meal. He paused for a minute, gasping for breath before he gagged again, nearly puking down the front of himself.
It was safe to say it had been a rough day for Reki Kyan.
After about 2 minutes Reki hopped back into the car, his sister's completely clueless.
"What happened?"
"Why did we stop?"
Reki wiped his mouth with his sleeve, "nothing I just ate too fast. ONWARD OKA!" he said as if nothing had happened.
Oka looked at him like he was insane before pulling off the road. The manager noticed how the mood of the car changed as they got closer to the neighborhood, even Reki who was doing his best to stay positive had an anxious look seeping in on his furrowed eyebrows.
Oka pulled up to their work place, "Reki can I talk to you inside for just a second?" He asked.
"okay one second let me talk to Oka and then we'll go to the park or something okay?" Reki said to his sisters as he climbed out of the car.
Oka pulled him inside, he looked concerned. One hand was resting on his face, his mouth covered by the space in between your pointer finger and your thumb. The elbow of the arm covering his mouth was resting on his other arm, which was crossed across his chest horizontally.
Reki closed the door behind him and then looked up at Oka. Reki's smile dropped when he saw Oka's concerned face in the dimly lit shop.
"Reki, what's going on? I know your parents fight sometimes but I need you to tell me the truth because this seems like WAY more than just "fight sometimes" Oka said, there was concern in his voice as he quoted what Reki had said a few months ago.
Reki stayed quiet, letting Oka continue, "a black eye a bloody- broken? Reki is your nose broken!?"
Oka reached to Reki to carefully pull the gauze off. Reki hissed in pain. Oka frowned at the swollen bulge in his nose.
"Oka it's fine. It's fine. As long as my sisters are okay-" he paused, remembering his mom. Sometimes she wasn't any better than his dad.
"As long as they are okay everything is fine." Reki said.
"What about you Reki. Are you okay?" Oka asked seriously. There was nothing joking or even calm on his face. It scared Reki to see Oka like this.
Reki took a deep breath, trying to keep his loose and silly personality up front, "I'm finneee a black eye and a bloody nose can't take me down!"
Reki started to back towards the door, talking so Oka couldn't stop him, "and I'm super strong and super cool and everything is gonna be fine you know?"
His hand was on the door handle.
"Reki-" oka started. "AND. AND I! Me! I need to. Go. Now. ILL SEE YOU OKA! THANKS FOR MCDONALDS!" he was out the door and halfway to the car.
"WE WILL FINISH THIS CONVERSATION TOMORROW!" Oka yelled after him. Reki stuck a thumbs up out the open window as he drove off.
Reki breathed a big sigh of relief and started driving. One of the twins started to cry.
"I wanna go home but not where mommy and daddy are yelling."
Reki was uneasy, he didn't know what to do. He wasn't a parent he was a brother. He didn't know how to care for them. He was so close to his own breaking point.
"Hey shh shh I know. But it's getting dark so we have to go home okay? I bet they are done yelling now so it'll be nice and quiet when we go to sleep. You could even listen to the princess and the frog sound track as you fall asleep. Sound like a plan?" Reki said.
His older younger sister, as he liked to call her, groaned, "I don't wanna listen to princess and the frog." They shared a room, he understood her struggle.
"Okay then you can sleep in my room and I'll sleep on the couch. Easy." Reki compromised.
"What if dad is sleeping there?" She mumbled.
"Thennn I'll sleep on the floor of my bedroom. Easy peasy." Reki said as they pulled up to the side of the house.
"Okay. I'm gonna go inside first and I'll come out and tell you if they've calmed down a bit. Sound like a plan?" He said as he climbed out of the drivers seat. The girls nodded and he ran inside.
As he entered the house he was hit by a wall of silence. He found his mom passed out in the kitchen with an empty glass falling out of her hand. He immediatly ran over, quietly checking her pulse in case his dad was around.
To his relief she was just passed out. He picked her up, with effort, and carried her to her bedroom. His dad was nowhere to be seen.
He ran back out to get his sisters, pulled the car into the garage, and they went inside. It was silent and it was music to their ears.
Reki sat down in his room, pulling out his laptop to do homework. He had 3 missing assignments and more to do. He closed his laptop, feeling overwhelmed. He needed a breather, a release.
He couldn't skate, so he pulled out a cigarette and lit it.
