Negative thoughts very often accompany us in our lives, although we know they shouldn't. We don't want them, but we still feel blocked inside. If we were hurt in the past, we will be afraid that similar situation may occur in the future. It tortures us inside. A multiple examples of such feelings could be presented. One of them is a situation of a person who has a fiancé, trusts him implicitly and wants to marry him. When they break up because of the fiancé's fault, a lot of changes happen in that person's mind. Even the "toughest guy" in the world (although he won't tell anybody) will be anxious about his future partner. He will be afraid that the history would repeat itself. Although we are aware that the new partner is a completely different person and we shouldn't expect that situation to happen again, "such things" still remains in us. "Such things" are the negative images, or even films, which repeatedly play in our heads. They don't allow us to forget the bad events from the past, because once in a while they appear on their own. It's as if they wanted to destroy our here and now.

I will try to show You how strong this feeling can be. I'll use an example of a friend of mine. He's always loved dogs (and still does), but each time he meets an unfamiliar dog he's afraid that the dog could bite him. Those anxieties began when he was attacked by a dog a few years ago when he was handing out flyers. It was a really small dog which could easily walk under a closed gate, but although the bite itself wasn't too painful, my friend claims that situation has had a significant impact on him. Since then he's been very careful with unfamiliar dogs, although he knows that he shouldn't do that because dogs can sense his fear. Although he realizes that he can harm himself with such behavior, the negative feelings from the past are still present and badly affect his present life.

Each of us has some negative memories which results can still be felt. Even when the reason tries to explain that it's irrational, still this "thing" blocks us inside – unfortunately, in many cases successfully.

Write down all the negative occurrences that has happened to You in the past which You want to get rid of, because You know they have a negative impact on Your present life. It's going to be a preparation to the battle with Your "bad demons".

Destructive films in our heads can either be linked to the bad feelings from the past or be a gloomy scenario created by us which has never happened, and, most probably, will never happen. However, when we create such scenario, we put an obstacle in our minds... So, how can we deal with bad thoughts – whether they are bad memories from the past or the worst, most gloomy scenario created by us?

We should change the negative images or films in our minds into black-and-white and small films, viewed from the third person perspective, as if we were watching a movie with us in it – the worse the quality the better. We have to convince ourselves that the situation presented by the film isn't that important. We must realize that the situation which happened in the past or the one we've created ourselves doesn't really matter, because what's happened is already history, belongs to the past and shouldn't block us and have a destructive effect on the present moment. All the past events or events created by us do not really matter – apart from the fact that they are extremely exhausting and block us inside. Therefore, let us fast-forward this negative film and distort it as it happens during fast-forwarding movies in the old video players, when there are horizontal strips on the screen. Then, let's move it backwards, and again forward – so that we feel indifferent about the situation presented in the film and the negative emotions holding us back leave us.

Therefore, let us distort those negative films/images in our minds in every possible way, so that they will make us laugh. That's when the fear will go away.

Adam Małysz is a Polish ski jumper and one of the best ski jumpers in the history of that discipline. A multiple Olympic medalist and a multiple winner of the World Cup (he's won a several dozen of competitions in total). A few times, he's been chosen the best Polish sportsman. And we could have never experienced it! Why? Because before all those successes he's later achieved, Adam had been a poor ski jumper. He'd liked jumping but, unfortunately, he hadn't had enough skills – well, at least that's what he had thought back then... He'd even been considering the possibility of dropping the sports career and taking up a job in the profession he had been taught – as a roofer. Thankfully, a while before he has made that decision, he had started working with a psychologist. That's how he's been able to unblock all the barriers which had been stuck in his head and hadn't allowed him to achieve good scores during the competitions. Those barriers, which he had placed in his mind, would have been insurmountable for him without the help from the psychologist. Therefore, now You can see that the same person, after "unblocking" his mind, is able to do amazing things. It shows the importance of the state of mind in reaching goals.
