"This is it." Emily thought to herself as she carried a cardboard box of her things to her new Section Chief's office. Once the elevator door opened, Emily made her way to her office. As she reached the door, she inhaled deeply. the brunette knocked on the door lightly. "Come in." She heard a female voice say.
Emily opened the door and saw a middle aged woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. She wore a serious look on her face as she stood up. Emily walked over, placing her box on the floor. "Emily Prentiss." Emily said with a bright smile. "It's an honor to met you Section Chief Strauss."
Strauss shook Emily's hand, but her face remained cold. "I've heard a lot about you, Agent Prentiss." She said sitting down; Emily followed suit. "You've made quite the name for yourself at the FBI's Chicago office." Emily simply nodded with a flat smile. "Your request to transfer to the Behavioral Analysis Unit has been accepted, I see." Strauss looked over Emily's file. "You will be working with our best field team. I expect you won't give them any trouble?"
"Of course not, ma'am." Emily said quickly. She could feel her plans getting sweaty as she gently bit her lip.
Strauss stood up and Emily quickly followed. "I look forward to having you with us. Good luck, Agent Prentiss." Strauss shook Emily's hand again.
Emily smiled and left Strauss's office, letting out a huge sigh of relief. But then she realized she still had to met her Unit Chief. She made her way to the fifth floor. She looked around the room, looking for her new Unit Chief's office. Just then she ran into a blonde woman dressed in bright clothing and tall heels. "Oh my god!" Emily exclaimed. "I'm so sorry."
The blonde gave Emily a bright smile. "Don't worry about it, love." She said kindly. She titled her head, nothing that Emily was confused. "You look lost. Who are you looking for?"
"Uh, my new Unit Chief's office. I don't see them anywhere." Emily said looking around.
"Boss man's office is right up there." The blonde said pointing towards an office above the other desks with her pink pen.
Emily gave her a bright smile. "Thank you so much. I'm Emily Prentiss." Emily held out her hand to the blonde.
"Nice to meet you. Penelope Garcia. Technical analyst." She said shaking Emily's hand. "I'll see you around."
"Yeah." Emily said leaving Penelope behind.
Emily made her way up to the office Penelope had pointed at. As she made her way up the steps, she noticed that the office blinds were closed. She found it odd, but made the assumption that he was generally very introverted and quiet. She knocked on the door and heard a low "Come in" from the other side of the door.
Emily immediately opened it, and she almost dropped her box. The man she saw sitting in his office was a man she hadn't seen in years. She quickly closed her mouth when he looked up at her with equal amounts of shock.
Hotch hadn't seen Emily Prentiss since she was seventeen years old. She looked much different now. She had taken out her nose piercing and cut her raven hair to a more manageable length. He was shocked to see her in front of him. "Emily?" He asked in shock.
"A-Aaron. It's uh, nice to see you again." Emily said trying to compose herself as she shook Hotch's large, calloused hand.
His face was serious and tired looking, Emily noticed. She thought he looked tired when he was twenty-three, but he looked incredibly tired now. "What can I do for you?" He asked in a serious voice.
"Uh, well I-I guess I was hoping you could tell me where to put my stuff?"
Hotch tilted his head in confusion. "I'm sorry?"
"I'm supposed to start here. At the BAU."
"There's been a mistake."
Emily's smile quickly faded. She handed him her transfer papers. "I don't think so, sir."
"It was definitely a mistake." He said looking down at the papers with a furrowed brow.
Just as Emily was about to speak, there was a knock at the door. Emily turned around and saw a young woman with long blonde hair and big blue eyes. "We're almost ready to start." She said looking back and forth between Emily and Hotch. She gave Emily a small smile.
"Thank you. I'll be right there." Hotch nodded and the blonde left.
Hotch turned back to Emily with slightly raised brows. "I didn't approve this transfer, Agent Prentiss. I'm sorry for the confusion but you were misinformed."
Without letting her get a word in, Hotch walks passed her, leaving her in his office speechless and frustrated. "So that's how it's going to be?" Emily hissed to herself as she watched Hotch walk into a room with a round table.
Emily simply stood and leaned against the top railing with her box of things. After waiting for about fifteen minutes, six people came out of the room and make their way back to their respective offices and desks. The only one left behind was Penelope. She quickly walked up to Emily with a bright smile on her face. "What are you still doing here, Emily?" Penelope asked.
"I'm not sure. I was supposed to start working here, but Agent Hotchner doesn't seem to know that I was transferred here." Emily sighed.
"He has a lot on his mind. I'm sure he just forgot. Let me show you around the place." Penelope took the box from Emily's hands and set it down on the empty desk beside her. She walked over to someone's desk. There was a black man sitting casually in a desks hair looking over a file. He was bald but had a goatee on his chin. He was very well built and rather attractive but not Emily's type. "This is SSA Derek Morgan."
Morgan stood up and gave Emily a handshake. "Derek Morgan. Nice to meet you." He said with a charming smirk.
"Emily Prentiss." Emily replied with a smile.
"She'll probably be working with us." Penelope said in a matter-of-fact tone.
"I look forward to possibly working with you." He joked.
"Likewise." Emily nodded.
Just then, someone caught Morgan's attention. "Hey, pretty boy!" She exclaimed gesturing someone over. A tall man walked up from behind Emily. He was very tall and thin. He had long, wavy, dirty blonde hair and brown eyes. He gave Emily an awkward smile. "This is Spencer Reid. He's a real ladies man."
Emily could tell he was joking. "Nice to meet you. Dr. Spencer Reid." He said awkwardly shaking Emily's hand.
The brunette shook Reid's hand. "I know who you are. I read your dissertation on Identifying Non-obvious relationship factors using cluster weighted modeling and geographic regression. I found it rather interesting." Emily smiled.
Reid looked genuinely surprised by Emily's response but smile happily as a result. "I'll introduce you to everyone else later. Let me show you the ropes." Penelope said leading Emily away from the guys.
Emily and Penelope began walking down the hallway with Penelope pointing at doors and spaces stating their function. "This is the break room where we mostly just get coffee." Penelope said. Suddenly she perked up. "Do you want some?"
Emily let out a relaxed sigh. "I thought you'd never ask."
As the two made small talk about Emily and her previous postings, Penelope handed Emily a cup of coffee. "You know, I did a background on you before you got here." Penelope winked. Emily gave a fake smile, trying to show that she wasn't scared of what Penelope may or may not have found out. "And I have one question."
"What is it?" Emily asked taking a sip of coffee.
"Was Hotch hot when he was younger?" Penelope asked with a smirk.
Emily almost spit out her coffee. "I...well, uh..." The brunette stuttered.
"I'm thorough. I know he worked as security clearance for your mother when you were seventeen. So, spill the beans."
Emily found it hard not to blush. Of course he was hot when he was younger. His hair was slightly longer then, but he only gotten more handsome with time. "I suppose so." Was all Emily said, trying not to give away her secret attraction.
Penelope poured slightly. "Aw, come on! You have to give me more than that."
"What else is there to say?" Emily shrugged. "I never saw him much. He's clearly always been stoic though. It wasn't just a personal vendetta he had with me."
"Oh yeah! He's been like that for as long as I've known him."
Emily and Penelope both let a chuckle. "I think you're going to like it here." Penelope smiled.
"That is, if I get the job at all." Emily said through gritted teeth.
The young blonde that had come into Hotch's office previously that day. "Hi, I'm the BAU's communication liaison, Jennifer Jareau. You can call me 'JJ' though." She said shaking Emily's hand.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Agent Emily Prentiss." The brunette said returning the smile.
"If you don't mind me asking, what are you doing here?" JJ asked tilting her head.
"Well, I thought I'd be starting today, but Agent Hotchner thinks otherwise."
"What do you mean?"
"I was transferred over to the BAU. I have the signed papers and everything but he doesn't remember signing them."
"Hotch is busy. I'm sure he signed them a while ago and just forgot about it. He'll warm up to you eventually."
Emily winced and crossed her arms. "We'll see."
"It was nice meeting you. I hope you end up working on our team. It'd be nice to have another girl on the team."
Emily chucked as she watched JJ leave. "Hey, Prentiss." Morgan said. "Wanna come grab drinks with us?"
"Rain check?" Emily asked nervously.
Morgan simply nodded before leaving. Now Emily stood practically alone in the office. She looked up at Hotch's office. Through the closed blinds she could see a lamp on in his office. Just then, she saw Hotch come out of his office. His cold brown eyes met hers. "Agent Prentiss. My office." He said before quickly turning back into his office.
Emily quickly followed, closing the door behind her. "Sir?" She asked, playing with her fingers.
"I'm not sure what happened with your transfer papers, but I'm going to sort everything out." He said not looking up from his files.
"With all due respect, Agent Hotchner, it was your signature on my transfer papers. And I believe that I would make a valuable asset to this team." Emily said standing up straighter.
Hotch looked up at him with the most stern face she'd ever seen. "Were you sent here to spy on me and my team?" He asked coldly.
This caught Emily off guard. She knew that Hotch didn't trust women as much as men; it was just who he was. But she never thought he would stoop this low. She felt a fire burn in her chest but managed to keep herself composed and calm. "Excuse me?" She asked shocked.
"Were you sent to spy?"
"Sir, I'm a lot of things, but a spy is certainly not one of them. With all due respect, I'm highly offended you'd think so lowly of me. I've known you've never trusted me, even as a teenager. I think politics make people hate themselves, and it tears families apart." The raven haired woman looked down. "I would know."
Hotch stood from his desk as Emily kept her head down. He walked over to his filing cabinets on the other side of the room. Emily looked up and watched Hotch, eyeing his every move. Hotch hung his head in shame. "I'm sorry, Emily. I should've known." He said in a low voice.
It had been a long time since Emily heard him call her by her first name. He'd kept things professional all day, but whenever they were alone, even when they were younger, he was vulnerable in front of her. And although she'd never admit it, she liked hearing her name on his lips.
When he turned around and looked up, he saw Emily leaning against his desk with her arms and ankles crossed. He admired how her navy blue pencil shirt hugged her hips. He felt a hunger build up inside of him when he saw Emily. A hunger he hadn't felt since he worked at the Prentiss household all those years ago.
Emily recognized the look in his eyes well. She recognized it from the many nights they spent together when Emily was young. She bit the corner of her bottom lip and slowly uncrossed her ankles as Hotch walked closer to her. He stood less than six inches away from her. As he leaned closer into her ear, placing his hands on either of her in the desk, she felt his breath tickle her neck. "Whatever happens next, we never speak of again. Do you understand?" He asked in a low voice that was almost a growl.
Emily's breath hitched in her throat. She bit her lip even harder before looking in Hotch's dark brown eyes. "Yes, sir." She finally managed to say in an equally seductively voice.
