Fukidashi rushed Monoma into the booth and to the changing rooms, quickly handing Monoma his hero outfit. "Go and change! Your date will be here in..." Fukidashi checked his watch. "3 minutes! Move! Move! Move!"
Monoma moved inside and changed quickly, but still made sure he looked acceptable before he walked out.
He could hear the muffled voices of Fukidashi and someone else. The voices stopped for a few seconds, so Monoma took it as a cue to leave the changing room and find out who his date was.
Monoma walked out, and on sighting his date he nearly screamed out of anger, embarrassment, and happiness, so he couldn't help but to exclaim;
"The fuck?"
Fukidashi and his date both turned to Monoma, his date's eyebrow raised in mild annoyance.
"Y-You!" Monoma spluttered. "W-Why? H-How? W-What? W-Where? W-When? W-"
"It was a dare." Shinso explained, folding his arms across his chest. "When I said I'd choose a random person, there was a 90 percent chance of me getting one of your other classmates. Of course the universe gave me the 10 percent chance it would be you." Shinso sighed. "Whatever. Let's get going."
Monoma knew he should have been angry at Shinso's words, but he couldn't bring himself to care much. Their relationship was... complicated, to say the least. One minute they could be laughing and joking, then the next they're bickering and fighting. Monoma teasing Shinso earlier that day probably didn't do him any favors. Monoma could see why he would take his chances with virtually strangers, especially if it was strangers or Monoma, though he couldn't understand why Shinso would take the dare.
"I'll just head out with you guys, you know, supervisor and all-"
Monoma cut him off. "It's fine Fukidashi-kun, it's Shinso anyway, so I'm sure we'll be fine."
Fukidashi seemed a bit apprehensive, seeing as his speech bubble had a suspicious looking emoticon on it (ತ_ಎತ), but he eventually came to a decision.
"Fine, but if anything goes wrong, call me Monoma-kun."
"Will do, Fukidashi!" Monoma replied, before turning to Shinso.
It was like they were on Fake Date Number 3.
Monoma and Shinso walked out of the booth and into the small stone crosswalk in front of it, and Monoma had the distinct feeling that something was watching them. Shinso must have felt it too, because he grabbed Monoma's hand and they walked side by side. Shinso's guard was up, Monoma could see it through his stance, though Monoma didn't know what Shinso was guarding against. It wasn't like it was a villain, the school had taken precautions that that wouldn't happen, but Monoma guessed it wouldn't hurt to be on guard.
Attempting to make small talk as they walked, Monoma decided to get some answers from Shinso.
"Why did you take the dare?" Monoma asked, because Shinso didn't seem like the kind of person to feel pressured by peers.
"Some kind of weird official initiation process, at least that's what Denki said." Shinso stated, and Monoma slightly flinched at the use of Kaminari's given name. It had never set well with Monoma whenever Shinso said it, and he knew he didn't need to be a rocket scientist to understand why.
"Besides," Shinso continued, "I can get a break from that cafe. Saying hello to people and asking for their orders can get annoying." At the last word, Shinso gave a very pointed look at Monoma who just flushed and huffed.
"Whatever..." Monoma mumbled.
They made their way over to the restaurant, and that's when Monoma started to question why Shinso would choose a restaurant of all things. Was he just being unoriginal because he decided not to put any real effort into this 'date?', or was it that he had been expecting to get a particular person, so he chose it? Monoma didn't know what to think, but the logical side of him told him that the former assumption was probably the truth.
The feeling of being followed hadn't left the entire walk, so Shinso dragged Monoma over to the forest which was relatively close to the restaurant. Once they were alone, Monoma couldn't help but to tease Shinso, even if it wasn't exactly the right time.
"Oh Shinso-kun, if you wanted to get me alone and to yourself, all you had to do was ask."
"Shut up." Shinso said bluntly, ignoring an infuriated Monoma. Just as Monoma was about to retort with a spew of insults, Shinso beat him to it.
"I know you're here. Show yourself." Shinso ordered, and a familiar girl suddenly appeared right in front of them.
"Haruna-chan?" Monoma asked. Why would she follow them?
"H-Hi Monoma-senpai!" Haruna chuckled nervously. "I-I'll just get out of your hair-"
"Wait a second." Shinso interjected. "Why exactly were you following us? I know you know Monoma, judging from how he knew your name, but isn't that a bit too extreme?"
"We actually just met today." Monoma informed, and Shinso seemed even more suspicious of Haruna.
Haruna flushed and became nervous, sweat beading on her forehead, body trembling and eyes darting back and forth, never resting on a singular position. "W-Well you see-"
"HARUNA-CHAN!" someone shouted from afar, running up to the small group. Shinso raised an eyebrow. He did that a lot actually. Monoma winced a little in surprise as the figure approached. It was a girl that was just a bit taller than Haruna, and Monoma recognized her to be that Class President (or Vice Class President) that had thanked him.
"Karano-san!" Haruna exclaimed, seeming just as surprised as Shinso and Monoma.
"Haruna-chan, why did you go off like that? I was worried." Karano asked.
Quirk Registry - Ultra Archive
Name: Maindo Karano
Hero Name: Not confirmed yet, but she's thinking of being the next Mandalay
Age: 16 years and 2 weeks old
Quirk: Telepathy
Facial Features: Auburn hair, hazel eyes, glasses
Relatives: Mandalay is her aunt, and Kota Izumi is her aunt's second cousin
Image (ignore the horns):
Her quirk allows her to utilize mental transmission and send telepathic messages directly into people's minds. She has the ability to send a message to tens of people at a time. She can also send multiple messages at the same time. Normally, she wouldn't be able to receive them, but because of quirk genetics, the ability has been given to her, and she can read people's minds as well. Her quirk is Telepathy while Mandalay's is Telepath, so they are very similar, but also a bit different. If she overuses her quirk, she gets sever headaches that can cause her to lose consciousness.
Interesting Facts: Her first name Maindo is the Japanese word for mind, talking about how her quirk is a mental one, and concerns entering and speaking with one's mind.
"It's fine Karano-san, I was just uhhhh....." Haruna trailed off again.
"Stalking us." Shinso finished for her.
Karano all but sighed at the information. "I told you to forget it Haruna-chan. Now you can see that both Shinso-senpai and Monoma-senpai are really dating."
Both Shinso and Monoma turned red. While they were struggling to speak, Haruna sighed and took Karano's hand.
"Sorry for disturbing you on your date! I hope it goes well!" Haruna apologized, smile a bit strained.
The two girls teleported away, and it was just the two blushing messes that were left in the forest.
Monoma coughed to fill the quickly developing silence. "Well, that certainly was interesting."
"Let's just get this date over with." mumbled Shinso, walking in the direction of the restaurant.
Monoma chuckled and made to follow Shinso, but he heard a small whispering sound, along the lines of 'Psst!'
"Head on forward, I'll meet you at the restaurant Shinso!" Monoma called, heading in the direction of the whisper.
Shinso shrugged and went on his way, not even glancing back for fear of his cheeks turning red again.
Monoma walked around the area he had heard the voice, and just when was he was going to say that he had been dreaming or hallucinating the sound and go over to the restaurant, the voice came back.
"Psst!" The voice hissed. "Over here!"
Monoma looked at the various trees and walked around, partly to calm his system with the beautiful landscape, and secondly, to look for his sister.
He reached a small clearing in the forest, which had a beautiful lake nestled within it. The lake had a long and thick log beside it, almost like a little bench, a ring of flowers surrounded the lake, the sun giving it a halo - like look.
'This looks like the kind of place Kaibara would be, taking pictures.' Monoma noted, before the someone jumped down from one of the trees, startling Monoma.
"What the fuck Ketsueki! You nearly gave me a heart attack!" Monoma chastised, waving his arms frantically.
"Shhh! Someone'll hear us!" Toga shushed him. "I'm sorry if I wanted to surprise you Neito."
Monoma pouted. "I'm pretty sure you of all people would know the difference between surprise and incursion."
Toga rolled her eyes. "Yeah, whatever." her expression turned serious, not an easy feat for the usually bubbly girl. "Why have you been avoiding me Neito?"
Monoma gulped and looked away, partly from guilt and partly from embarrassment.
"I-It's nothing against you, Ketsueki but-"
"It's because you're not sure on what you want to choose, I get it." Toga finished for him.
Monoma sighed. "I know what I want to choose Ketsueki, and believe me, I want to choose you, but I've already found a home here. We also both know choosing both you and U.A is impossible, at one point I would either get caught or have to reveal myself."
Toga narrowed her eyes. "So you choose U.A."
Monoma's gaze found it's way to the ground. "Ketsueki, I've found a family here, they all support me and my quirk, and even my cocky attitude I made for myself. Vlad King is like my second father, I just can't go ahead and betray them."
Toga took a deep breath. "Do you think they would still consider you family when they learn about your past? About your family? About me?" she asked. "Neito, I'm just trying to protect you. Shigaraki is starting to get impatient, and I really don't want anything to happen to you."
Monoma looked up at his sister, his gaze a little scared, but still determined. "I'm sorry Ketsueki, but I've made my choice. I'm going to stay here with my friends, and my real family."
Toga smiled. "You sure love them, don't you."
Monoma nodded.
Toga smirked. "Just like you love that boyfriend of yours, huh?"
Monoma blushed a furious red. "W-We're not dating Ketsueki!"
Toga tilted her head. "But aren't you two on a date right now?"
"Y-yes, I mean, n-no, I mean, i-it's complicated, alright?" Monoma spluttered, thoroughly embarrassed.
"Don't bother denying it little bro, it's obvious you like him."
Monoma flushed even more.
Toga chuckled. "It's okay Neito, I'm glad you chose U.A, and I can't wait to see you when you become a great hero."
Monoma gave a small, self depreciating chuckle. "With my quirk, I won't be as great as everyone who has their own unique quirk, but I'll try my best!"
Toga shook her head. "Your quirk is amazing alright? It's so volatile that you'd be great at surprise attacks."
"I'd need a team."
"Then get one, nothing is wrong with having a team."
"Maybe I'd have to fight you one day."
"Then I'll just have to win."
"People always overestimate my quirk, once they find out it's weaknesses, no one would want to be on my team."
"Use that to your advantage, and scare villains. Besides, if the people in your team know your weaknesses and still accept you for it, doesn't that make them true teammates?"
"Sometimes people think I'm a cocky maniac and stay away from me."
"Then don't be a cocky maniac." Toga smiled.
"Says the crazed blood luster. It's in our blood Ketsueki."
"And blood is the strongest bond we can have, isn't it?"
Toga flipped open a watch and checked it. "I have to get back to the hideout, and you should get back to your date so that he doesn't get suspicious." She turned away from him and gave a small wave.
"I'll see you later Neito."
"See you later Ketsueki."
Monoma smiled at her retreating figure and headed over to the restaurant. On a bench beside the entrance, sat Shinso with his head resting in his palm. His eyes turned to face Monoma, and he got up and went over to him.
"I thought you would have gone inside already." Monoma noted, walking into the restaurant with Shinso.
"Guests have to come together, they don't want any possible villains posing as someone's date and attacking the place." Shinso informed.
"Ah, I see. Safety precautions."
"Pretty much."
"Hello!" a new voice greeted them, a blonde girl with ocean eyes. "Welcome to 3 Out Of 3 Restaurant! Reservation for..?"
"Shinso. Hitoshi Shinso. Table for 2." Shinso replied.
The girl grinned more and took out a notebook. "Ah yes, your names are here. If you would mind coming closer?"
Monoma gave an awkward and hesitant look to Shinso who just went forward without any other prompting. Sighing, Monoma did the same.
The girl took both their hands into her own.
"What are your names?" she asked.
"Neito Monoma."
"Shinso Hitoshi."
"What are your hero names?" she asked as well.
Monoma felt like he couldn't control his mouth, that it was all coming out without permission from him. Was it a truth quirk? One that made people speak the truth always?
Before he could contemplate it further, his mouth moved to answer. "Phantom Thief."
"Cerebrum." Shinso answered.
Huh, now that he thought about it, Monoma never did bother to ask Shinso about his hero name. Cerebrum, it was the part of the brain that controlled voluntary movement, intelligence, memory, and some other functions, wasn't it? Or was it the Cerebellum that did that?
Monoma really needed to brush up on his biology.
"Are you villains?" the girl asked finally.
"No."
"Nope."
The girl let go of their hands and opened a door that led to the main restaurant. It was so inconspicuous that you would have to be the one to have built the structure, or have the design for you to be able to tell where it was. Considering the fact that pro heroes were there, shouldn't they be exposed, to serve as a warning to any villains?
Oh well, it wasn't Monoma's place to judge.
"You are free to enter. Enjoy your meal!" the girl said, grinning brightly.
"Thank you." Monoma said, before following behind Shinso as they entered the main dining area.
They both sat down at the table, and Monoma awkwardly twiddled with his fingers as Shinso watched.
"So..." began Monoma. "How has Class A been treating you?"
"Fine." Shinso replied. "Has anything interesting happened in Class B?"
"After the villain attack, no."
"I see. Class A actually hasn't had any villain attacks this term. It's really a miracle."
"Tch. Those losers are always attracting villains to U.A. I'm willing to bet 2000 yen that before summer vacation, an attack would have happened to them."
"Oh, really?" Shinso asked, eyes twinkling with amusement. "Are you willing to take up that bet?"
"Deal."
The two both chuckled, and a waiter came up to them, dropping two menus on the table.
As Monoma looked through it, he decided to ask more questions.
"So what initiation process are you doing?"
Shinso sighed. "Apparently, to join the Bakusquad-"
"Bakusquad?" Monoma cut in. "What's that?"
"Basically a group containing Bakugou, Kirishima, Ashido, Sero, Kaminari, Jirou, and if I complete this dare, me." Shinso explained.
"Why do you want to join?"
"Denki has been begging me to for months now, so I agreed."
Monoma flinched a little again."I see."
"As I was saying, to join the Bakusquad, you have to do an outrageous dare, as a sign of loyalty."
"How does that show loyalty?" Monoma asked.
"By doing the dare, it shows that you would do virtually anything for the other members of the group. Jirou had to do the same thing, and I think her dare was to wake Aizawa up with her guitar."
"That must have been crazy. Any other squads I should know of?"
"There's also the Dekusquad. It consists of Midoriya, Uraraka, Iida, Asui, Todoroki, and Aoyama. The Dekusquad are always fighting the Bakusquad, especially over me."
"Over you?" Monoma asked, a bit suprised.
"Both the Dekusquad and Bakusquad wanted me to join their group, so I had to choose."
"What was the deciding factor?"
"Bakugou. I'd rather be with the dude than against him."
Monoma chuckled. "Why is it called the Dekusquad anyway?"
"Because Midoriya's hero name is Deku. It's also a nickname Uraraka and Bakugou have for him."
"Hm. I guess we have those kind of things in Class B too."
"Really?" Shinso asked, eyebrow raised in question.
"Yeah, there's the Awasesquad, containing Awase, Kaibara, Rin, and Tsuburaba. Tetsutetsu, Honenuki, Tokage and Pony join them sometimes, though never all at once."
"What other squads are there?"
"There's the Kendosquad. It consists of me, Kendo, Tetsutetsu, and sometimes Shiozaki. There's also the Smartsquad, which has me, Honenuki, Kendo, Tokage, and Kaibara."
"Class A also has a Smartsqaud."
"I bet they aren't as smart as our Smartsquad."
"So you're telling me that Kendo, Tokage, Honenuki, you and Kaibara are smarter than Midoriya, Bakugou, Yaoyorozu, Todoroki and Iida?"
"We could try verifying it."
"I don't think it's really up for debate."
Just before Monoma could retort with an 'of course it is!', the waiter came back, a small notepad in her hand.
"What would you like to order?" she asked.
After giving their orders, the waiter walked away again, and the table fell into comfortable silence, past conversation almost forgotten.
"Hey Shinso?" Monoma asked delicately.
"What?" Shinso asked in return, voice sounding mildly interested, but not annoyed.
"I-" Monoma took a deep breath and resisted the urge. Now just wasn't the time. "Thanks, for this. Even if it was a dare."
Lowering his head from where he was sipping the cup of complimentary water the restaurant had provided, Shinso looked at him incredulously, before his cheeks turned pink and he coughed into his fist.
"It's fine Monoma, really-"
"Neito."
"Huh?"
"Call me Neito. We're friends, right?"
Shinso smiled. "Yeah we are, Neito."
Monoma grinned even wider. He like hearing his name in Shinso's voice; it was soft and melodic and baritone, and just perfect.
"So you can call me Hitoshi as well." Shinso supplied.
"As you wish, Hitoshi." Monoma winked,
