New Year

Originally, I wanted to throw a huge party for New Year's Eve, but some things just don't go as planned. My pet dog died at the age of 14, my house got broken into, and my living space was trashed. And thus I decided to go to my best friend's house for the holiday.

Gemma was a few years older than me, but it didn't seem like it. We always joked about immature things, and giggled like we did as crazy teenage girls.

I hadn't known Gemma was throwing a party, though, until the day before New Year's Eve. So I rushed around, getting my outfit together, and buying Gem some wine. Now if I only knew who else was going to be at the party.

It was finally the day. New Year's Eve was finally here, and I was walking up the sidewalk to Gemma's house.

I could already see the crazy lights, hear the music blaring, and the terrible stench of drunk people.

How fun.

I knocked on the front door, not knowing whether to let myself in or not. But the door swung open, and while I was expecting to see Gemma, I was greeted with a surprise.

It was Harry.

Harry had always been in my class, considering he was only a few months older than I was. He had been the cheeky boy, always finding something funny to say or some silly activity to do. I hadn't seen him at all after high school, and can I just say, wow.

He was stunning.

A blush rose to my cheeks as I thought this, but he didn't notice. He smiled at me, motioning me to come inside and out of the cold weather.

"Y/N? I haven't seen you in such a long time," Harry smiled, leaning in to kiss my cheek as a greeting.

"I know," I say, and an overwhelming wave of memories flooded my mind. I was thrown back to the time where Harry and I dated. "It's been too long."

Harry nodded, a huge grin plastered over his face. "And you've only gotten more gorgeous, I see."

My cheeks flushed and I gave a shy smile."You too." I said this without even thinking about it. So I tried to fix my mistake. "I mean...maybe not gorgeous, but you sure have, um, you know...but seriously just look at yourself..."

This only made me sound more stupid. Harry was grinning from ear to ear,and I could tell he was trying to hold back a laugh.

"I'm sorry, I-"

"No worries, love," Harry chuckled, before turning around and heading out of my sights.

I decided to look for Gemma then. After only about five minutes of searching, I found her in the kitchen with some other friends. I walked up to the group and got their attention.

Gemma was the first one to notice, and a giant smile took over her face.

"Okay, guys. Now that Y/N's here, we can start the party," she giggled.

I caught up with all of my old friends through talking, dancing, singing, and drinking. Finally after some time, there was only 10 minutes left until the new year. Everybody got their drinks together, their confetti poppers, and their noise makers.

Gemma and our friends gathered on the couch, and I was left to sit on the loveseat. We were waiting for the ball to drop on TV.

I felt the presence of someone next to me, but choose to ignore it, even when they took a seat on the loveseat.

I listened to the musician that was live, tapping my foot and humming along.

Pretty soon, it was the countdown.

10...9...8...7...

The person next to me scooted closer.

...6...5...4...

I felt an arm around my back as I got my noise maker ready.

...3...2...1

My chin was turned to the right and someone's lips pressed against mine. I kissed them back, whoever it was, for my "New Year's kiss", but the taste of their lips made me feel giddy inside. The shape and the taste were oddly familiar...

I pulled away and opened my eyes to find green ones staring back at me. My jaw slightly dropped and I looked at Harry with wide eyes. A crimson color rose to my cheeks.

Harry smiled at me, and then he spoke. "And now for the New Year's kiss."
