Dani woke early. She and Kie fell asleep in one of the two bedrooms at the Chateau, and Kiara had a serious case of sleep-talking.

Dani had yet to tell anyone what JJ had said to her. Kiara tried to pry when Dani and her first shut-in for the night, Kie could obviously tell that something happened, but Dani wasn't ready. She was still processing the weird tension herself.

Dani slipped out of the bedroom with ease, floating silently through the kitchen. She made a stale cup of coffee and set herself up on the back porch. The sun moved slowly, crickets chirping and frogs croaking.

The pogues slowly joined Dani. It was a quiet morning, sleepy teenagers laying around the porch as they emerged one by one. If the day were less humid they would likely be on the boat, letting the breeze and the water cool them in the sun. It wasn't too hot though, as school had technically started and those hints of fall were becoming clearer and clearer.

It wasn't like Dani to just ignore school for no reason, but she felt like the events of the night previous gave her a good excuse to ignore Kook-land for another day. Besides, Pope was also skipping and that never happened unless there was a good reason. To Dani, her good reason was her inability to process the events of the night previous.

Pope sat on one of the porch chairs, his feet propped up on the table, "I mean. We gotta talk about last night. Dani jumping in front of Kelce like that. That was epic!"

John B laughed, "Did you see Kelce's face?"

"Yeah. It woulda been much better if you had let me continue to yell at him," Dani rolled her eyes.

JJ held a piece of trash in his hand, an empty can sitting a few feet in front of where he sat, he shot the piece of trash like a basketball, making it easily, "Bomb drop!"

Unfortunately, JJ also fell off the chair he threw the trash from. The only object to catch his clumsy fall was the couch Kie lay on. JJ flung all the weight he could onto the couch, avoiding the porch ground as best he could. His dramatic flail led him to crack one of the couch's legs, loudly. With the leg now broken and both JJ and Kie putting weight on the object, the couch shifted slightly. Kie practically fell on JJ, who was leaning half on the ground and half on the couch. Both teens shrieked loudly in the chaos.

Dani laughed, incredibly loud, it was pure JJ to break a couch like that.

"Another broken couch," John B threw his arms in the air, the way his body stayed slouched in a chair betrayed him though, John B wasn't actually mad.

"You gotta sleep there," Pope pointed toward the noise, his own body slumped and his eyes closed.

"I always sleep there..."

JJ's thought was interrupted as the Chateau screendoor closed lightly. The pogues all quickly directed their attention to where Sarah Cameron stood, her attention pointed at the ground. Dani instantly recognized the guilt Sarah held.

John B barely spared a glance at the girl before he turned back toward the center of the room, "Hey."

"Well, hello, princess."

"What's up?"

Dani didn't say anything to Sarah, choosing instead to take the John B route, glancing once at the blonde and then focusing her attention back on anything else.

"Shouldn't you be on Figure Eight with your little group of polo players? Or did you break up with Topper?"

John B let his air of supremacy slip, looking genuinely hopeful and curious.

"We're just friends."

John B looked at Dani, sarcasm clear in his voice as he still talked to Sarah, "Oh, he's just a friend. You have a lot of friends, Sarah Cameron."

"Yeah, and it seems like you've got some of your own too."

Dani dropped her eyes from John B's, Sarah had a point with that one.

"Alright, what are you doing here?"

Sarah sighed, turning to where Pope sat, "I'm here for Pope."

The pogues looked at Pope curiously, the boy looking just as confused.

Sarah continued, "I think I found the island room."

Dani stood, actually looking at Sarah for the first time, "What are you talking about?"

"The island room. The one Denmark Tanny left clues about. I think I've found it."

Kie sat up, instantly losing the mellow demeanor, "Where?"

Sarah looked down, leaning back slightly, "Um. That's the part you're not gonna love. I think the island room is in Tannyhill."

"Tannyhill? As in, your house?"

"Yeah. It's kinda a long story, but... Look, can we just go check it out?"

The pogues remained silent, nodding their way to the Twinkie.

Pope saved the day, trying to ease the tension by reading more from Denmark's diary on the ride to Tannyhill.

"Guys, listen to this. The diary says the cross holds the most holy relic in all of Christendom, the Garment of the Savior."

Kie rubbed her head, "So wait, he's saying there's a holy garment inside the cross?"

"Yeah. It says the garment is capable of healing the sick from any malady."

"Mmm, yeah. If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well."

The teens all snapped their heads to JJ at once, even Sarah and John B from the front bench gave JJ concerned looks.

"What? I went to Sunday school."

"Sure."

"That's... Wow, new JJ lore," Dani sat beside Kie, bumping her gently.

Kie laughed hysterically, influencing Sarah and John B to follow suit.

Pope cleared his throat, trying to bring the attention back to the very important information he was attempting to disclose, "Well, that explains why Limbrey would want the cross so bad. She thinks it can heal her."

"And she was willing to kill us last night over some damn mystical healing cloth?" Dani leaned her head back against the Twinkie's frame, chuckling lightly.

"Burton's gone all cynical on us."

"Limbrey tried to kill you?"

Sarah and JJ talked over each other, distinct words getting lost in each other.

Kiara breezed over the two distinctly blonde teens, "What else does it say?"

"Many feel that we have sinned to steal such a sacred thing, and God will strike His vengeance on us."

"Thing is, God did have His vengeance."

"He sent a hurricane to sink the ship. Only Denmark survived."

The Twinkie fell silent, no one knew quite what to say in response. It was true, God had sent his revenge, taking down Captain Limbrey and leaving only Denmark with the cross and gold.

John B pulled the van gently into the Cameron driveway, Tannyhill staring down at the teens intimidatingly.

They exited the Twinkie apprehensively, Sarah leading the way confidently. Dani passed through the house as she did many times before, barely listening to the boy's drone on as she thought about how ridiculous she was being. Sarah had been her friend for years, while Dani had come to find family in the pogues and a righteous desire to protect them, Sarah was also her family. Hell, technically the entirety of the Cameron clan had been her family at some point. Dani watched Ward kill a man and then stare her straight in the eyes, choosing to spare her life. Perhaps the girl should've felt something when Ward blew himself up, but also perhaps she was saving herself by not shutting down, pushing the most tragedy she faced out of her mind. Theorizing was useless. She needed to snap out of her head, focus on the task at hand.

"Whoo!"

"This place still freaks me out."

"Yeah, same."

Sarah led the pogues to a dining room, wallpaper shredded all along the walls, remnants on the floor. Old, mahogany furniture was littered around the room, lamp shades slightly tilted.

"Pope, look."

"Whoa. You've got to be kidding me."

All around the shredded walls were paintings. A lighthouse, a ship, a tree. The drawings mimicked the island, long forgotten when the fancy wallpaper hid them away.

"Yeah. I know, right? It's the island room."

"Incredible."

"It's been here this whole time."

"No freaking way."

"This definitely means something."

"Wow."

The teens were awestruck, wandering around the room and looking at the incredible new clues.

"Jeez."

"Dang."

"This is incredible," John B spun around, too overwhelmed to pick one area of the room to inspect, "Yo, this is a map of the whole island."

JJ walked toward the painted lighthouse, a sailing ship at the side, "Yeah, John B, I think you're right because this is Rixon's right there. And then there's the lighthouse."

"Guys, look, Parcel 9 and the well," Kie stood across the room, running her hand over another piece of history.

Dani came to Kie's side, "And the gold."

John B, still standing in the middle of the room, continued to spin around, "So if that's Parcel 9, and then if that's Rixon's," he moved toward the one wall that the teens had yet to touch, painted ships coming to meet a scrap of land with a few houses perched atop, a small inscription sat below one of the ships, 'masonboro' in clear cursive. John B continued, "Then that's gotta be the surf break at Mase."

JJ met his friend there, holding a photocopied page from Denmark's diary, "Right. And look. Pope, come here. This is Denmark's handwriting for sure."

Pope looked between the scribbles on the wall and the paper JJ held out in front of him, "The drawings, they match up."

"Holy shit."

"Denmark, you genius."

"These are all his drawings. He painted this entire room," Dani ran her hand along the walls, her fingers carefully tracing the drawings Denmark Tanny left.

Kie shook her head, the more the pogues learned the more confused they felt, "Yeah, question is why. What's he trying to tell us?"

"It's gotta have something to do with the key, right?" JJ threw his hands to his head, removing and replacing his hat in one motion, "Right?"

"Yeah, but what?"

Sarah had stayed silent, slowly moving out of the way each time the pogues used the room to brainstorm.

John B turned to Sarah, her attention focused on one corner, away from the rest of the teens, "How did you know to uncover this?"

Sarah ran a hand over the wall she stood before, "I didn't. It was like this when I got home."

"What?"

"I am so confused. I've been in this room a handful of times, and never once has there been any indication this room held so many clues," Dani interjected, her voice quiet.

Kie lifted her hands, reasoning with them, "Okay, then someone obviously, with no obvious motive, destroyed this room. But who?"

"I don't know."

"The freaks," a voice from behind the teens spoke, completely nonchalant in tone.

All six of the friends turned suddenly, shocked by the sudden appearance of another human in the room. Fortunately, it was only Wheezie Cameron, the youngest and most ignored Cameron sibling, a trait that should never be overlooked.

"Wheeze!"

JJ stepped forward, "Wait. What freaks are we talking about, Wheeze?"

"Uh... that sick lady and her attack dog."

"He really is an attack dog isn't he?" Dani laughed, though it was not typical amusement, there was a slight panic underlay.

JJ stepped forward once again, coming to stand in front of Dani, "Ignore Burton there, she has a slight fear of dogs."

Wheezie scrunched her eyebrows, clearly annoyed by the teen's strange behavior, "Um... yeah. They showed up last night, and they wanted to talk to Rafe."

Dani smiled, again, slight panic as she laughed, "Oh, it always leads back to Rafe!"

"Again, ignore her. We talkin' a pale blonde lady?"

"She have crutches?"

"Uh-huh."

"It's Limbrey!" Dani said in a sing-songy tone.

John B turned to Dani this time, giving her a strange look, "You okay there Dani?"

"Perfectly fine. Just feel like we're going in circles a bit."

John B nodded apprehensively, directing his attention to Wheezie once again, "Wh... what happened?"

"Well. At first, they searched the whole house looking for something, and then Rafe told me to go upstairs. But I didn't wanna miss out, so I listened through the grate. He said something along the lines of, 'We looked all over the house. This is the last room to check out.' I assume that's when he made his way into this room. I then heard 'Well look. Is this what you were talking about?' and the lady started cheering. I'm guessing she destroyed the perfectly ugly wallpaper. I did hear her say, 'This is it. Alright, let's get the rest of the wallpaper off.' There was more laughing and swearing and cheering, but I doubt that is important. Anyway, the lady was like 'Yay, we found it' and then they were talking about getting across the sand flamingo."

JJ lifted his arms off the table he leaned on, "That's code for something."

Pope shook his head, "The cross," he turned to Wheezie, questioning her intently, "The Cross of Santo Domingo?"

"Yeah, that's it. Oh, and they were talking about, like, angels. A lot of angel talk. I don't know."

Dani threw her arms in the air, "I swear. These damn angels again."

"Angels?"

It was becoming common as of late, Dani practically losing her mind and the pogues ignoring her strangeness.

"Guys. Denmark's famous last words. He buried the real treasure at the foot of the angel. They're looking for an angel. We have to find the angel in the room."

The pogues moved around the room, looking closely at the drawings.

"Ha! I was right, we're still coming back to the angel and the key" Dani practically jumped around the room.

Dani knew why she was acting so strangely. The more the pogues found out the more danger they were likely to put themselves in. It was evident that this Limbrey chick was not afraid to hurt teenagers, and Rafe was obviously an unhinged danger, she knew that firsthand. Dani knew that her current risks meant she probably needed to face her issues head-on, but she didn't know if she could handle it. Dani didn't even know where her dad was, or even the last time they had slightly communicated. There was the unfinished business of Ward's death and her processing issues. Dani and Sarah were currently fighting, another currently unresolved issue. Not to mention, the weird tension she kept finding with JJ. It didn't matter though, for now, Dani could push it all from her mind and focus on the task at hand, finding the damn angel in the room.

"Start looking."

"Spread out."

"There's a church over here," Sarah ran to one of the walls.

"Yeah, check the church."

"Looking around for an angel."

"Wait, could this be an angel?"

"Maybe... maybe..."

Wheezie stood a little panicked, watching the teens run around the room, "What's... what's going on? Are you guys gonna tell me? Or?"

"Uh. The lighthouse maybe?"

"Maybe it's heat-sensitive."

"That's what I said."

"Really?"

Dani watched JJ. The boy had zoned in on a grand tree on the wall. He was completely enthralled, likely zoning out the yelling behind him.

Dani approached her friend, gently placing a hand on his shoulder, "What is it J?"

"It's still there," JJ whispered to Dani lightly, he turned toward the other teens, raising his voice over the chaos, "Hey, yo! Hey, guys, I think I found something. Come here. This humongous tree is still on Goat Island. You know what it's called?"

Pope answered for JJ, "Angel Oak."

"Yeah and look right there. There's the keyhole."

"Wait."

"That means the cross is buried at the foot of the angel."

Dani's hand still lingered on JJ's shoulder, her voice a whisper, "The cross is buried at the base of the tree."

"Wow. That must be where he put it. That must be where they are right now!" the excitement in Pope's voice reached an all-time high, "We have to go!"

The pogues ran out of Sarah's house in record time, ignoring JJ's comments, "I think I'm Sherlock Holmes, alright? You're welcome by the way."

"Yeah, hurry up, Sherlock."

John B drove insanely fast, passing through Kildare Island in record time. They had pushed the Twinkie to the brink before, but it was possible this had been the fastest they had managed a venture. The teens had barely continued to unpack the things they had learned before John B was coming upon an old, white church.

Pope was practically falling over the front bench, his face crammed beside where John B and JJ sat in the front, "Guys, we're coming up on Freedman's Church. The church Denmark built for all the slaves he freed."

John B kept driving, following a dirt path dividing part of the marsh. There was little giving room on the path, only enough for one car at a time. The sun shone brightly, midday clearly upon them, and perfectly sculpted in the sunlight sat a large twisted tree, peering high above the tall grass and slight trees of the marsh.

"There it is, Angel Oak."

John B followed along the path, with nowhere to go besides straight.

"Oh shit! Tide's coming in," John B braked gently, allowing the six teens to carefully assess the way their dirt road turned into a watery, mud path instead.

"Um..."

"Hey, wait a second. Look. They already came through here. Those have to be Limbrey's tire tracks. Guys, we gotta go."

John B and JJ sat unsure in the front.

"Mmm, what do you think, chief?"

"I'm thinking it's looking a little dicey."

"Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree with that statement."

"Yeah."

Kiara moved Pope slightly, peering her head between the seats, "Okay, clearly they made it, no?"

"Yeah, but I'm sure their vehicle has a bit of an advantage over ye old Twinkie," Dani added from the back, making no attempt to add her own head to the pogue mix.

"Yeah," JJ nodded, "In a two-wheel drive? I don't know about that."

Sarah laughed, clearly amused and obviously knowing, "Why are y'all acting like you're not gonna do it anyways? Like, when have y'all ever done the safe thing?"

Dani threw a hand over her face, closing her eyes and leaning against the van, "Jeez."

"She's got a point."

"Speed is your friend here, okay? So, put her down in second and hammer down brother."

"Stick to the high ground in the middle, John B."

John B shifted gears, clenching his jaw in anticipation, "Alright, ready? Here we go."

JB stepped on the gas hard, giving the Twinkie no ease.

"Come on, bro. Punch it. Speed is your friend. Speed is your friend."

JJ was getting, amusingly, frustrated, "You're not going fast enough."

"I'm... give me a second."

Dani spoke, her voice surprisingly calm and mild, "It's gonna slide. This van is a thousand years old."

"You're fishtailing already."

"I know!"

Pope sat on his knees, his face still leaning between JJ and John B, "Not to put any more pressure on you, but if you don't make it through, we'll be stuck here forever."

"Oh nonsense, Pope. I'm sure if we asked nicely both Limbrey and Rafe would jump at the opportunity to give us a ride," Dani added, again in an incredibly even tone.

"Put your head back, okay?" John B pushed Pope back lightly.

"I guess the boys up front don't wanna think about sharing a ride with mrs and mr evil?"

"Dani, how are you so incredibly calm right now?" Pope looked at the girl strangely.

Dani shrugged in response, "I truly couldn't tell ya."

John B let off the gas, letting the Twinkie come down to a medium pace. The mud path had officially turned back to solid ground.

"I told you we'd make it."

JJ hit the ceiling twice, "That's my girl."

Dani smiled at Pope, "Maybe I just knew in my gut we'd make it," ending her sentence with a laugh.
