"That's Sector Four," Bellamy's voice speak from the radio, "We've talked about this. The people there are not a threat." His voice still manages to give me butterflies. Kane and Miller had successfully bugged Pike's office. Octavia and I walk while listening to the secret meeting in occurrence.
"We need that land." Pike demands. I glance at the dark haired girl next to me. She sports the same look of worry that I do. Bellamy and Monty try to reason with Pike. My heart soars as I hear them try to convince him not to murder a bunch of innocent people. The Bellamy I know is still there.
"Will you do what you need to do for your people to survive or not?" Pike argues. I groan and stop walking.
"I can't listen to this anymore, O." I say, pinching the bridge of my nose with my thumb and pointer finger. Listening to this secret meeting is giving me a headache. A headache that can only be brought on by stupid conversations.
"They're going to go through with it." Octavia whispers to herself. I quickly catch up to her.
"We have to do something." I insist.
"Miller, meet me at the cave in thirty. Bring my horse." Octavia demands into the radio. Then she motions for me to follow her as she takes off running.
We dash through the trees, over roots and fallen branches. I easily keep up with the girl as we make our way to her predetermined meeting point. We don't stop until we arrive at the cave. Octavia storms through the cavern, searching for Miller. He hasn't arrived yet.
"O, what's the plan here? We can't just go storming into a village and ask them to give up their homes! I wouldn't, so I know they won't go without a fight." I insist.
"Well its that or be wiped out!" The girl shouts. I can tell she is panicking. Miller appears at the entrance of the cave.
"About time." I mutter. Octavia whips around.
"Where's my horse?" She demands.
"Outside. Nice to see you too," Miller jokes as Octavia pushes past him, "Octavia, wait!" The boy looks between me and my friend.
"What if the grounders don't leave?" He asks us. I shake my head, already asking myself the same question. "We will just be leading our people into an ambush."
Octavia pauses and considers this fact.
"We have to at least try." Octavia growls. Miller sighs and looks to me, his eyes begging for help. I raise an eyebrow, daring him to ask what's on his mind.
"Maybe you can talk to Bellamy." He pleads gently. My shoulders tense up. I open my mouth to speak but no words come out. I can't speak the truth about the sky boy. But his sister sure can.
"My brother is on the wrong side." She states plainly, like its a fact. Like day and night. We are on the right side and Bellamy is wrong.
"So what? We don't even try?" Miller asks, looking to me again. I have tried. I tried and failed. I don't know how many more failures I have in me. My eyes drop to the floor, searching for an answer.
"What do you think happens when Lexa finds out that Skaikru massacred another grounder village?" Octavia spits. I can hear the anger dripping off her words. She is just as frustrated as I am. Cleaning up other people's messes is getting old.
"War." I mutter, answering the girls question.
"More dead friends." Miller echoes my thoughts.
"We stop the attack. We stop a war." I say, locking eyes with Octavia. She nods in agreement. We both take off towards her horse, leaving Miller standing alone in the cave.
------------------
Octavia commands the horse we are on to slow to a walk as we approach the grounder village. I look around nervously. Maybe this was a bad idea. What if they recognize me?
Octavia leads the horse closer and closer to the village. Before I know it, we are in the middle of a clearing. A ring of tents surrounds us. Villagers bustle around us, not noticing our arrival. I can smell campfire smoke, something is being cooked.
"Ai nou na bash yo op." Octavia calls out, raising her hands in the air. The villagers finally notice us, and quickly arm themselves. They all stare at us with fear in their eyes. "I mean no harm!" Octavia calls again. I let her do the speaking.
"Liar!" A man shouts, stepping forward from the crowd. "I've seen your face before. At the battle of the mountain. They are both Skaikru!"
"You're guns killed our brothers and sisters." Another man accuses. I don't know how to react. These people think I'm Skaikru. Maybe thats for the best.
"We are sorry for your loss." I begin slowly, hopping off of the horse. "But we are here to warn you that the soldiers who did that are coming here now!" I shout, ensuring the entire village hears my warning.
"They want your land and they will kill all of you to get it!" Octavia continues. "You need to leave this place." A man lunges at my friend. I quickly go to her side.
"Are you threatening us?" He demands, getting dangerously close. My arms tingle, preparing for a fight.
"We are simply trying to protect you." I growl. The man scoffs.
"We don't need Skaikru's protection." He says, spitting at the ground beside my feet. My vision begins to turn red. The man swipes his weapon at my feet, but I quickly dodge. I refuse to draw my weapons against him, so I continue to dodge his attacks. He gives up and darts towards Octavia. He easily knocks her to the ground.
"We are just trying to help you!" Octavia cries out.
"How can we believe you?" The man questions, swinging at the girl again. Before I can step in, someone else speaks up.
"Because she helped me!" A young voice calls out. My eyes dart, searching for the origin. It's the boy we helped by the river earlier. I breath a sigh of relief.
"You two are the ones who saved Gavriel?" Octavia and I both nod eagerly. This seems to earn his respect.
"Let us discuss our options." He speaks and then ventures off further into the village. I look to Octavia.
"Do you think they will go?" She asks me breathlessly. I stay silent. I know Trikru. They don't go down without a fight. Something feels off.
Octavia and I stay by ourselves as we watch people pack up their things. It hurts me to see a village in distress like this. Families are running around trying to collect important items and clothing. There's even a little girl wailing in her mothers arms. The kids don't seem to know what is going on but I know that they can sense it. My gaze continues to analyzes our surroundings. Until it lands on something that makes me do a double take. A group of men are latching together logs. They have them arranged with the intention of a large bonfire. There are already three sets of these log structures and it looks like they intend to still build more. This isn't what catches my eye though.
Theres a liquid seeping out of the logs as the men bind them together. It appears to be burning their fingers. My mind drifts to Raven and her rocket fuel, but that's not what this is.
That's the sap that burned my skin. I bet it's poisonous. And in an instant I know that these people are going to stay and fight.
