Izuna smiled shakily, trying to show her appreciation towards Rin. She understood why her brother loved the girl so dearly, Rin was a kind person, and she was the only member of team Minato who visited her after Obito's funereal. Izuna wasn't ready to start acting like everything was the same, but she could at least show her gratitude. Rin never even asked her about her claws, about what made the girl a lab rat; an experiment, and for that Izuna was thankful.
The two girls were currently making hot chocolate in the kitchen, a beverage to drink beside the strawberries that Rin bought on her way to Izuna's--and previously Obito's--house. While waiting for the milk to warm up on the stove, Rin leaned on the kitchen table, deciding to speak up.
"You know, Izuna, Obito was really great." Rin hesitated, her breath hitching in her throat as she swallowed heavily, averting her eyes to the ground. Her voice broke as she continued to speak. "Did you know that he was the one to give you your name?"
Izuna, now fully captivated by what the Nohara had to say, looked at Rin intently, her lips twitching slightly in anticipation.Rin smiled in anguish at the younger interested younger girl, recalling a day when Obito was still alive.
Rin beamed at Obito, who was drenched in his sweat from running all the way here, panting as he leaned on his knees, his chest heaving up and down quickly. He was late once again, and as Rin watched him recollect his composure, she noticed from the corner of her eyes Kakashi huffing in frustration.
"Let me guess, another elderly woman needed your help?" The Hatake asked indignantly, arms crossed across his chest as he rolled his eyes dryly at how late his teammate was again, a disgusted frown splattered onto his face. He was met with a growl from Obito, who was finally able to breath normally.
"I was at Izuna's Academy entrance ceremony, Baka." The Uchiha spit back, a nasty glare aimed at the masked Shinobi across from him. Rin held her hands up in a surrender sign, trying to dissipate the tension in the air.
"Calm down, Obito-kun, Kakashi-kun." Rin's lips twitched upwards into a smile as her eyes focused on Obito once again, who immediately blushed madly as he looked away from her. "Who is Izuna, Obito-kun?"
Minato visibly tensed at that, having been quiet for the whole time. Izuna had been dragged into an A-rank secret, and neither Rin nor Kakashi were allowed to know about it. Obito obviously knew because he was her brother, and he was entitled to learn about the events that took place; however, Minato wasn't sure how far Obito's tongue would slip about his sister.
"That's... uhh... that's... that's my baby sister... yeah... my sister..." Obito stuttered over his words, going over and repeating himself in his nervousness. The love of his life was staring at him so intently and his cheeks were burning so much at the attention and it was too much.
"Oh!" Rin squealed loudly, her face breaking into one of the possibly largest grins Obito had ever seen. "You never told us you have a sister, Obito-kun! How old is she? Seven?"
"Yes!" Obito hastily nodded his head, his face exploding into a deep shade of red. His eyes were so wide and his mouth agape, mouth running dry. He felt like he couldn't breath, what with how painful it was at the moment to take in air into his lungs. He heard Kakashi scoffing in the background, but Obito was too euphoric to care about the jerk.
"You gotta let us meet her one day! She has such a beautiful name too!" Rin gushed on brightly, eagerly imagining how their meeting would go. Obito was an incredible brother, Rin was sure.
"Yeah! I named her actually..." Obito rubbed the back of his head sheepishly as he smiled back at Rin shyly and happily. Getting back his courage he continued on in a moment of bravery. "Izuna Uchiha was the name of one of our strongest clan's head, and one of the first to acquire the Mangekyo Sharingan, too! I named my sister after him because I want her to be super strong when she grows up, just like him!"
Obito jumped back at Rin's next squeal. She found the whole ordeal cute and adorable, and it just proved her belief that Obito was great as a brother.
"Isn't that Madara Uchiha's brother?" Kakashi interrupted indifferently, slightly curious about the legend Obito brought up. Obito mentally screamed in frustration and imagined himself stabbing the Hatake repeatedly before he begrudgingly replied.
"I wasn't about to name my sister 'Madara' after some psychopath, idiot." Obito pointed his finger at his teammate rudely, an unimpressed look on his face.
"I never asked you why you didn't name her 'Madara', loser." Kakashi jeered back, almost revolted at the thought of having a young, female Madara around. Everybody knew that the man was a complete lunatic, despite his power and talents, and nobody in their right minds would name their family after him.
"Now, now, guys, stop insulting each other." Minato finally talked for the first time since Obito arrived, a smile on his face. He didn't berate Obito for being late because he knew about the ceremony and how important it was to both Obito and Izuna, and he certainly wasn't about to deny that he liked the reason behind Izuna's name, but they had a mission to complete. "If we finish early, you can even pick up your sister from the Academy, we're just doing D-rank missions today.""
Awwww," Obito moaned, displeased at the turnout of events, but also kind of elated. "Not again, sensei!"
Rin would've asked Obito if she could come with him to see his sister, but she knew that that would be crossing her boundaries, since families liked to spend time together on the first day of the Academy, to talk about what the kids learned and whether they made friends yet and such.
"Well, that just means we have to put in our absolute best today, neh Obito-kun?" Rin titled her head at the boy, clasping her hands in front of her in an animated manner.
"Yosh! Come on, minna-san! What are we waiting for?!"
A peaceful silence passed between the two girls as the older one moved from her place to finish preparing the drinks. A minute later, they sat down on the couch in the living room, strawberries and hot chocolates on the table in front of them. Rin, thankfully, was highly familiar with the Shinobi code, so she effortlessly understood Izuna.
'I never made it through the day.' The Uchiha revealed, a bashful smile on her face oncea look of realization crossed Rin's face.
"That was why a Shinobi requested Obito's presence halfway throughout our missions, isn't it?" Rin worked out, her eyebrows furrowed as she tried to remember more about the day, it seemed so far away. "What happened?"
Izuna averted her gaze, staring at the drink in her hands instead.
Izuna fidgeted nervously in her place, eager to start learning and get stronger. Obito had left a while ago, and so did the relatives of the rest of the students. The children had introduced themselves, with a few giving Izuna funny looks and spewing some insults about her inability to talk. It hurt her pride, and when she had told the teacher about the mocking she got, the other kids called her out on being a snitch. That was when she learnt she had to do the one thing she had always been good at; keep quiet. Dearly had she loathed that fact, but there was absolutely nothing she could do about it.
Currently, it was recess time for her year and the year above hers, and everyone was hurrying around to make friends, Izuna similarly following. She had already prewritten her introduction on a piece of paper, 'Hi, my name is Izuna Uchiha. I'm 7. I like chocolate and my dream is to be the strongest Kunoichi ever! Can we be friends?' She was hoping to make best friends for life with someone. The paper she had used earlier when the students were introducing themselves in the class had similar wording, excluding the last sentence, but she didn't care.
Approaching a boy who looked around her age, she poked his shoulder with a cheery smile, holding the paper up for him to read when he looked at her with a poker face. Barely a moment later he ripped the paper out of her grasp with a revolted expression on his scrunched up face.
"Dumb!" He rudely pointed his finger at her, continuing with his insults, his lips formed into a pout. "Too stupid to talk, how do you wanna be a ninja?"
Sticking her tongue out at the boy, she reached into her cross-bag to take out a notepad, wanting to write a smart answer in retaliation to the boy, but as she fumbled through it, searching for paper along with a pen, the boy tried to snatch her satchel away.
Glaring at him, she growled at him soundlessly as she pulled on her bag, but he only yanked it closer to him. By now, a crowd of children had gathered around them, but they all cheered the boy on. They kept screaming 'Watashi!' all around, egging the boy to get the job done with as he finally jerked her possession away from her; however, the strap of the bag wrapped around her shoulder, and as the male twisted the satchel harshly, the bag teared open, spilling all of its contents on the ground.
Getting on her knees and hurrying to recollect her belongings, the kids laughed loudly and jeered at her form, reminding her that all of them were cruel.
"Dumb!" Watashi, presumably, yelled out as he stepped on her hand, stopping her from grabbing one of her pens. Izuna's mouth was left agape, as if she was screaming but no sound was coming out. She hit at his feet, tears springing to her eyes as she tried to push him away, but he only aimed a kick at her face. It was weak, not enough to break her nose, but it hurt, and her eyes clouded up tearfully even more in reflex. "Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!"
"Dumb! Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!" The children followed the boy's lead, all of them falling into one chant as they insulted her. Izuna hated them. Even as she laid on the ground, stopping herself from snapping and lunging at any of them, she knew she hated every single one of them with a passion. She wanted the earth to swallow her and disappear into some abandoned cave and live there for the rest of her life until nobody remembered her anymore. She was so humiliated. And everybody was just adding insult to injury at this point. Wasn't there any teacher around here?
As if on cue, one of the Chunin appointed to their class approached the small group with a frown on his face.
"Back off, Watashi-kun." He ordered with narrowed eyes at the boy as he crouched down to check on Izuna, his hands outstretched towards her face to look at the bruise, but the girl merely slapped his hand away, hissing at him mutedly. "I have to look at your-"
"Look at her Daku-sensei! She's a dumb loser!" Watashi obviously didn't get the hint, and neither did the rest as a few 'yeah!'s followed his declaration, but one of the boys decided to go even further.
"Yeah! If anything, get someone to fix her with some science-y stuff first! And then she can be a Shinobi!"
Izuna snapped. Her one-tomoe Sharingan activated subconsciously while her claws extended as she jumped at the boy in the crowd, the children parting away to get out of her way. She struck the sharp, bloody metals protruding from her knuckles at his unprotected abdomen, hitting her target.
Silence.
Not a single person uttered a word in shock and terror for a duration of three seconds, their eyes wide in horror and fear.
And then, as if someone dropped a bombshell, the pupils erupted into varying degrees of cries and shouts, and Daku-sensei immediately sprang to his feet, running towards the pair as his throat ran dry.
Izuna ripped her claws out savagely, aiming to cut the boy again but getting intercepted by the Chunin. She roundhouse kicked the man away, stabbing his left thigh with her left las her right ones buried themselves into the shoulder of the boy standing behind her, not giving him a chance to get away. She was too mesmerized by the blood dripping from the boy's body and onto the ground that she didn't notice Daku getting out a kunai from his weapon holster, but she saw him attempting to hit the back of her neck with the knife's back, and she instantly jumped away, putting in distance between the three of them.
He wasn't going to come after her, however, because he was too busy making sure that his other student didn't die. That didn't mean that the other teachers, whom had seen the commotion, weren't going to. One of the Chunin had snuck up on her and clasped her wrists tightly behind her back, stopping her from doing any surprise attacks anymore. No, this wasn't a Chunin. This was a Jonin. And she could do nothing about it. Izuna struggled viciously in his harsh grip, albeit pointlessly.
"Fucking shut up." He spat at her, dragging her towards the Chunin-ranked Shinobis, all who were on guard. He pulled her away from the clearing; she didn't even get to know what happened to the boy she maimed.
All that was left were colorful pens and a notepad in the clearing.
And scarred, crying children who had witnessed one of their own almost killing another.
Yes, Izuna was dumb.
'I got into a bad fight.' Izuna replied after a while, hesitation clear on her face on whether or not she should tell Rin about any details. 'I hurt someone really bad.'
After that incident, Izuna got punished for what she had done, Obito had payed for the boy's surgery and she had been transferred from class 1B to 1A so that their interactions would be at a minimal. She was lucky to have still been allowed to attend the academy, but the Hokage made it clear that, above all else, she was dangerous, unstable and the only alive and rescued experiment of the person who kept kidnapping other children like her. If she showed any behavior like that again, she would not only get expelled, but punished like any other criminal. It was a clear threat. And after what they had done to her, she didn't want to know what real punishment was like.
Obito had also taken up extra jobs on the side other than his ninja duties to fully pay the hospital bills. He had been so disappointed in her that day. When she had tried to tell him what happened, his answer was still the same a everyone else. "That is no excuse for what you did."
And Izuna had effectively scared everyone away from being her friend. She earned herself the nickname 'dumb monster', that is, if anyone was brave enough to talk to her, or stupid enough. There was definitely an excess of the later, sadly; cowardly idiots. She would come crying to Obito every day for two weeks straight, until her brother told her to ignore them. It didn't help, but it was obvious that her brother was tired from the side jobs and her constant crying. She stopped bothering him after that, but it hurt. No matter how many times they insulted her, it. still. hurt. Every single time.
It wasn't as if anybody cared, anyway.
The A-rank secret that had been her claws got out, with the exception of how she got them. So much for Rin and Kakashi not supposed to know, Minato had thought back then, as soon as he got the news. It wasn't as if they could stop Academy students, Chunin teachers and nurses from going around and gossiping about the fact that she almost killed a boy her age with claws.
She found out later that the Jonin that captured her was specifically assigned to the academy to keep an eye on her, but she didn't give that much thought. She expected it.
"Oh." Rin replied solemnly, her eyes turning empty and tired, showing her suffering at last. Not even when Izuna extended her claws, blood dripping from her knuckles at the tearing apart of the tissues--wanting the Nohara to understand completely without explaining--did Rin bother adding anything more.
Not even when Rin connected the dots.
Silence followed.
But Izuna didn't want to remember days as dark as those.
'The hot chocolate is really good.'
Izuna had finally tasted the drink Rin prepared, and she was left speechless at how delicious it tasted- technically, she was always speechless, but that was beside the point. The hot chocolate tasted like an absolute bliss, and it was a perfect distraction from the pain in her hands. Izuna downed the whole drink in one big gulp, dying to savor the euphoric taste. Rin tried to stifle a laugh at Izuna's behavior, but failed horrendously, so she settled for a giggle.
"Wait until you try the strawberries!" Glazed strawberries were a wonder, in Rin's opinion.
And, as soon as she had tasted them, in Izuna's opinion as well.
But Rin's hot chocolate was definitely her favorite still.
Too bad that in a few months, she wouldn't ever get a taste of either.
