Y/n L/n was a flower, but flowers can fade. Like a candle.
—
Before she was born; when her papá and Tia were just bebés, her Abuelo had to flee his home with others such as the Madrigals; her Abuela had died before they started the journey and her Abuelo was heartbroken but kept a picture of her in his locket.
There was commotion as he crossed a river with his two bebés in hand, as the noise grew louder he heard screaming and ran into the woods nearby. There he had fallen to his knees looking at the picture of his wife and cried, and cried, and cried. His tears soaking a san joaquin flower, the flower started to glow brighter and brighter until there was a flash—no two flashes on two different sides of the hill. Glowing floors and walls started to spread and grow before him.
There it was his casita for his family—his children and their children and every generation after that and in the distance directly across from his was another casita. As he walked through his casita he had a realization the casita seemed to be alive almost—a mind of its own.
That is how the miracle found her and her family long ago. And every time a L/n came of age the casita granted the child a gift to help the village they helped build.
The same thing happened with the Madrigals and because of that the L/n and the Madrigals grew to frenemies, each family's abuelos would argue about who built this town no one else in the families cared about it they just were happy they weren't alone.
Her Tia Maria married her Tio Gabriel and had her Primo Carlos and Primo Ricardo. While her papá Lorenzo married her mamá Renata and had her and her older hermano Clay and younger hermano Diego.
Maria is 50 and can read minds which is sometimes just as annoying as it is for everyone else as it is for her, Lorenzo is 50 and can talk to plants so all the farmers and florists adore him it's actually how him and Renata met; she's a florist, Carlos is 20 and can phase with means he can pass through solid objects, Clay is 18 and can see what others see—like seeing the world through them, Ricardo is 16 and can turn invisible; he's pretty mischievous to say the least, Diego is 5 and can breathe underwater like a fish, And Y/n is 15 and she can control the elements she harnesses the wind, earth, water, and fire.
Though Y/n has trouble with controlling her powers it makes things tricky around her she can't help as much as the others can, instead she helps with small things like creating a bonfire or changing a tide.
There were incidence when she was younger with fires or floods or aggressive winds or the ground shifting, the abuela of the Madrigals especially looked down on her for it saying that she needs to learn discipline—she would cry at her words but Señor Bruno always gave her a flower whenever he saw her and told her it was not her fault which made her want to see him again but one day he just disappeared from the town leaving her and his family. She had always wondered why and sometimes it kept her up at night but she learned to live with it as did everyone else.
Y/n's pov:
Present day.
It was sunny but it looked like at any moment a thunderstorm was approaching "Señora Pepa much be on edge" I commented at breakfast, I was at one head of the table while my abuelo was at the other end and everyone else was scattered on either end "can't blame her, gift ceremonies can be stressful believe me" my abuelo added from across the table, he been through many gift ceremonies in the past and only one had gone wrong 'poor Mirabel' I chewed on the thought with my breakfast. The breakfast table was a commotion as usual.
Everyone's words were muffled; drowned out by my thoughts. I've been really nervous for tonight to see everyone again although seeing Mirabel or Senora Pepa will be nice! Me and Mirabel have been friends since childhood while me and Señora Pepa just get along great. I think it's due to the fact that both of our emotions can affect our gifts greatly.
"Y/n we are to help set up Antonio's gift ceremony today" My mamá told me as she stuffed my cheeks with esquites "ok mamá!" I got up from the table. I wanted to see Pepa and see if she needs my assistance. "I think I'll help now I'll just walk over there" I pushed in my chair and started to leave the room "ok Y/n be safe!" I stopped walking and shifted towards the family table "Ok Tia!" I swagger out of the room.
I left our casita and started my short journey to the Madrigal's casa. The walk was peaceful and relatively quiet but I could hear in the distance Mirabel singing about her "amazing" family and something about how her 'primo Camilo won't stop till he makes you smile today.' I giggled at Mirabel. She was a wonder and my best friend but she's felt so alone with her not getting a gift and all I've tried to tell her it doesn't matter and she says it's fine but I can tell she is not fine.
I slowly caught up to Mirabel and her band of screaming kids then one of the little shits screamed "Mirabel was just about to tell us about her super awesome gift!" 'Ouch that's gotta hurt' I cringed at the little girl's words. She didn't realize that what she just said has one of the biggest impacts on Mirabel. "Oh Mirabel didn't get a gift" Dolores said as she popped her head out 'double ouch' all the kids looked shocked
at the new information. I ran up to Mirabel as one of the townspeople gave her a basket saying something about her being the "none-special special" and how her gift ceremony was a disaster 'triple ouch!' "Dear god ok I think let's get inside know Mirabel"
I was now dragging her inside carefully dodging people who were also here to set up "oh Y/n thank god your here Pepa is a "little" upset" Señor Felix said as he grabbed my arm to take me to Señora Pepa but to my shock she came bursting through the grounds with a tornado swarming her she was mumbling about how her baby's night needs to be perfect "Señora Pepa stay calm" I told her but it was too late the flowers were ruined and in ruin "oh my love the flowers" Señor Felix sighed "did someone say flowers?" Isabela emerged from the top floor and let vines take her to Señora Pepa.
She handed Señora Pepa some flowers and fixed the damage Pepa caused. Everyone applauded except for Mirabel—she looked rather upset about Isabelas presents. I saw them converse about something while I went with Señora Pepa to make sure she's ok.
"I'm fine Y/n I promise I just got upset. Can you go ask Camilo if he's seen Antonio? I've been looking everywhere!" She started to panic again so I gently put my hand on her arm reassuring her everything will be perfect "of course Señora Pepa" I started to walk away looking for Camilo.
My first two memories I have of Camilo were his gift ceremony and my gift ceremony.
His gift ceremony was a night that I would certainly remember. He was little like me and had a goofy smile plastered on his face. He looked around as he walked to his door but when he met my gaze he stood very straight and even puffed his chest out and also dropped the smile. He was trying to act tough and strong. I giggled at the sudden change. He was cute. Once the party started he would use his gift to shapeshift into me making a smile creep up on face. And when the night had to end he said one last goodbye to me and placed a kiss on my rose tinted cheek.
My gift ceremony was a couple months after his. I was all in white and my eyes were gleaming with excitement. I was nervous of course but felt this feeling of peace. I was finally getting a gift! One that I could help people with. I didn't dare look at anyone just the floor as I made my way to my door. I could feel my heart race as I climbed the stairs to meet my abuelo at the top. My abuelo took my hand and made me promise to do good with my gift, I gave him a huge smile and nodded. As I placed my hand on the doorknob with my initial engraved in it; the doorknob started to glow bright and that's when it happened, the fire grew big, the water flowed faster, the wind blew stronger, and the ground moved. When I opened my door I found a haven of rivers, waterfalls, forests, mountains, and stone chambers that were scattered throughout the gargantuan room. The party went on for what felt like ever but I danced with Camilo the whole night not daring to let him go. And at the end of the night a gave him a big kiss on the lips. The biggest smiles were forever stained on our faces.
I found Camilo just above the stairs to Antonio's door. "Camilo" I shouted trying to get his attention. "Camilo" I swaggered up the stairs swaying my hips ever so slightly, with each step I could feel his gaze scanning my moving figure. "Have you seen Antonio?" I questioned him, his sudden persona shifted as he was now leaning against the wooden post next to him and had a slimy smirk on his face "who's asking" 'wow' he really just pulled that one didn't he. I bit my lip to hold back the laughter trying to escape my mouth "...your mamá—Pepa." I replied still holding back the laughter, his face went blank and he stood up straight again "oh—um no I haven't" he said
rubbing the back of his head he had a tiny smile on but it was mainly to hide up his embarrassment "do you want to help me find him?" I asked, his smile grew bigger and arm now wrapped around mine "yes! Yes I would!"
We started walking trying to track down the little boy but it was no use. "My babé!" I heard from behind me I could tell who I was from the voice I shifted to face the voice "mamá!" She lifted me up in a warm embrace and started to place kisses on my cheek. I had forgotten they were also coming to help, "is papá here?" I asked, pulling away from the hug, my mamá stopped the warm kisses and looked at me then Camilo then back at me with a smirk "oh—well yes your papá is here he's helping Dolores with decorations...hello Camilo!" My mamá was now embracing Camilo in a huge hug, the hug lasted for a good while before mamá pulled away to ask "so you and my daughter huh?" My face went bright red as did Camilo's face, everything fell silent and the air was thick and hard to breathe in or at least it was to me "MAMÁ?!" I grabbed her arm and pulled away and into a corner away from Camilo although I could see him creeping closer "mamá what are you doing?" She gave me a look and told me "don't act like nothing is going on between you two" I groaned at her words, but that's when I started to feel it I was heating up not because I was embarrassed but because my fire was raging on "mamá? I—um" she quickly sprang into action and waved for my primo Ricardo to come over here and Señora Julieta too.
They all came to my rescue while Felix grabbed Camilo away—it was more of holding him back actually. I drowned out their words. My head was burning but before I could even move a muscle Ricardo picked me up and carried me to the river nearby. The walk was all a blur, my vision was failing me. Cold water consumed me, Ricardo was holding my head above the water while Julieta poured water on my head and stroked my hair. Camilo had been watching from a distance while his papá made sure he didn't interfere.
The process of pouring water on me wasn't working like they had thought which meant there was one other option letting the magic out. "Can you sit up Y/n?" Mamá asked me. I gave a weak and subtle nod and every one backed away a good distance while Camilo walked closer until he met the others "it's ok Y/n let it out it's ok" Julieta reassured me. Flames erupted from my body consuming the air around me, the flames were strong and powerful; raging on until the magic was steady. Camilo looked shocked, not scared though. The flames were dying down and heat was going down. My head wasn't burning anymore. The flames left my body as I collapsed into the river beneath me. I was under the cold liquid for not long before Ricardo scooped me up and carried me out and to my mamá I recall her saying for him to take me back to our casita so I can rest until the ceremony. I faintly remember Camilo's face staring at me in awe.
The next thing I knew I was in the comfort of my bed in our casita with Ricardo at my side. "Thank you," I whisper to him. Ricardo was my fiercest protector and had always made sure I was fine and didn't lose control and when I did he was always with me every step of the way. "Shhh! Y/n just sleep please I'll be here when you awake" he gently said as he patted my head "ok ok" I agreed as my eyes shut I saw Camilo in my mind—images of today running through my mind.
