S3E2 - Chaos Rising
Derek, Sasha and Isaac were at the loft. Sunlight was spilling in through the windows. The beta was pacing nervously while the Alpha was sitting patiently at a work table. Sasha, on the other hand, was laying on the couch, finishing her homework.
"I'm starting to not like this idea. It sounds dangerous. I definitely don't like it. And I definitely don't like him." Isaac muttered thinking about what was going to happen to him.
"You'll be fine." Derek replied, raising his eyes to heaven.
"Why does it have to be him?" The beta asked slightly annoyed.
"He knows how to do it. I don't. It'd be more dangerous if I tried it myself." He answered, still not looking at him.
"You know Scott doesn't trust him. And personally, I trust Scott." Isaac said.
"Do you trust Derek?" Sasha, who was listening, suddenly questioned her friend without removing her eyes from her work. She didn't notice the soft gaze the Alpha gave her when she defended him.
"Yeah." He replied and glanced at his Alpha. "But I still don't like him." He grumbled.
"Nobody likes him." Derek said.
"I do." Sasha said, making the two werewolf looking at her with incomprehension. "He helped save my life and he helped looking for your betas this summer. He can't be that bad." She added looking at Derek.
Before they could respond, the front door opened and revealed the man they were talking about. Peter entered the loft and glared at his nephew and his beta.
"Boys, just an F-Y-I. Yes, coming back from the dead left my abilities somewhat impaired, but the hearing? Still works. So I hope you're comfortable saying what ever it is you're feeling straight to my face." He told them while walking towards them.
"We don't like you." Derek replied and glared at him.
"Fair enough." Peter shrugged. "Hi Sasha." He said, turning towards the young woman. "You're still not looking for a pack? 'Cause I'll gladly join yours. You're much nicer than your boyfriend." He added with a smirk.
Isaac couldn't help but giggle when he saw the two Alphas widening their eyes. They probably didn't think that Peter knew about their friendship, as Sasha called it the day before.
"Don't be surprised. I knew it before you even did." Peter added with pride. In fact, he knew exactly what was going on between them.
"Shut up and help us." Derek said as he stood up.
Peter smirked and then beckoned Isaac to come closer. The beta sat in a chair and seemed really nervous. He flinched as the older man delicately touched his claws to the nape of his neck.
"Relax. I'll get more out of you if you're calm." Peter told him.
"How do you know how to do this?" Isaac asked him scared.
"It's an old ritual. Used mostly by Alphas since it's a skill that requires quite a bit of practice. One little slip and you could paralyze someone. Or kill them." Peter replied, scarring him even more.
Sasha had given up her homework and sat down on the couch. In front of her, Derek was sitting on a chair, looking nervous too as he was closely watching his uncle.
"Have you had a lot of practice?" Isaac questioned him, now totally freaked out.
"I've never paralyzed anyone." Peter shrugged and both Alphas looked at him with concern.
"Wait, does that mean..." The beta began to say, but got cut off by Peter jamming his claws in his neck.
Both of their eyes began to glow, Isaac's turning a fiery yellow while Peter's a brilliant blue. The two Alphas watched the older man's head wrench to the side, with his eyes moving about as if he was seeing something. Isaac jerked up in the chair as Peter struggled to keep his grip on him. Immediately, Derek stood up and started forward to intervene.
"Wait." Peter told his nephew. "I see them." He added as he yanked his hand free of the beta's neck.
He staggered to his feet, breathless. Isaac dipped forward as if to pass out, but Sasha grabbed him and pulled him back against the chair. She put her hands on his shoulders and examined him to make sure he was alright.
"What did you see?" Derek asked his uncle.
"Not much. It was confusing. Vague images, phrases..." Peter rambled, leaning against the wall.
"But you saw something." The Alpha stated.
"Isaac found them." He nodded.
"Erica and Boyd?" Sasha asked him with a hint of hope.
"I barely saw them. Just glimpses." Peter replied with clenched fists.
"But you did see them?" Derek asked again to make sure.
Peter nodded and continued to massage his fists, which were hurting him. Then, he looked at his nephew with almost fear in his eyes.
"And worse." He whispered.
"Deucalion." Derek said with fatality.
"He was talking to them. Something about time running out." Peter added, his voice tinged with concern.
"What does that mean?" Isaac asked, still holding his neck.
"He's going to kill them." Sasha replied and Derek noticed the fear in her voice. He got near her, put his arm around her shoulders and drew her close to him.
"He didn't say that. But he did make a promise. That by the full moon, they'd both be dead." Peter told them and internally smirked at his nephew's display of affection.
"The next full moon?" The Alpha questioned as he began to stroke Sasha's back in a comforting way.
Peter then nodded, confirming the worst. Derek's beta were in danger and they were running out of time.
"Tomorrow night." He added and locked eyes with his nephew.
Later that day, Scott called Derek and asked him to come to school to see something that could be related to his betas. Therefore, at the moment, he was glaring coldly at Allison and Lydia. Both teenage girls had the same bruise on their forearm and were convinced that it meant something.
"I don't see anything." The Alpha said dryly.
"Look again." Scott insisted.
"How is a bruise going to tell me where Erica and Boyd are?" Derek asked and coldly locked eyes with Allison.
"It's the same on both arms. Exactly the same." The beta insisted again and glanced at Sasha who was sitting next to Stiles. He knew she also thought it wasn't a clue, but he still hoped she would change her mind.
"It's nothing." The Alpha replied, without breaking the intense eye-contact with the brunette.
"Pareidolia." Lydia suddenly said, as if it was evident.
"It means seeing patterns that aren't there. It's a subset of apophenia." Sasha intervened when she saw the incomprehension of the eyes of the others. "Those bruises are just a coincidence, nothing more." She added.
"Sasha..." Scott whispered and looked at her, silently begging her to be on his side. "Take another look." He then asked Derek. "They're trying to help." He added quieter.
"These two? This one who used me to resurrect my psychotic uncle." The Alpha spat and pointed his finger at Lydia. " And this one who shot about thirty arrows into me and my pack?" He added, pointing at Allison.
"Hey, no one died. There might have been some maiming. A little mangling. But no death. I call that an important distinction." Stiles said, trying to lighten the mood.
"My mother died." Allison curtly said, looking directly at Derek.
"Your family's little honor code is what killed your mother Allison, not him." Sasha told her, annoyed with her former friend's behavior.
"Oh my God, Sasha! Don't defend him! I'm supposed to be your friend." The brunette raised her voice and threw a death glare at the female Alpha.
"No, you're not. You stopped being my friend the day you betrayed the pack." She replied dryly before she stood up and started to walk towards the door.
"That girl was looking for Scott. I'm here to help him, not you anyway!" Allison shouted right before the door closed.
"You want to help? Find something real." Derek told her scornfully. Then, the Alpha walked out of the room, followed by Scott and they joined Sasha.
"Give her a chance. We're all on the same side now." Scott almost pleaded.
"Then maybe you should tell her what her mother was actually trying to do that night." Derek replied. He was tired of being held responsible for that.
"I'm sure they want to help, Scott, but those bruises aren't clues." Sasha gently told her friend. She maybe didn't trust Allison anymore, but she did trust Lydia, so she knew they were really trying to help. "I forgot my book in my car. I'll see you in chemistry." She added and discreetly glanced at Derek.
The teenage boy returned in the class while the two Alphas started to walk through the school corridors. As soon as they were far enough from Scott's hearing, Derek turned to Sasha and smirked.
"Did you really forget your book in your car?" He asked her suspiciously.
"Yeah. Why would I lie?" She replied in a fake innocent tone and unconsciously bite her lower lip, making the Alpha's heart fasten.
Derek quickly checked around them and when he saw that no one was here, he pushed the young woman against the lockers. Her head was trapped between his arms and he inched closer to her face.
"You wanted us to be alone." He whispered and slowly leaned in. "You wanted me to do that." He added and gently placed his lips on hers. Sasha immediately kissed him back and put her hands on his hair. While she was tugging on them, Derek's hands landed on her waist and brought her closer to him.
Suddenly, the school bell rang and put a stop to their making-out session. The two Alphas parted and pretended that nothing happened as students began to fill the corridors. Derek couldn't help but smirk when he noticed Sasha slightly flustered.
"I should probably head to class." The young woman said, her cheeks blushing.
"You coming to Deaton after?" Derek asked her. Earlier that day, Scott had called the veterinarian and he offered his help to retrieve Isaac's memory, but the Alpha knew Sasha had already some plans.
"Yeah, I'll come, but I have to leave at eight." She replied. She was supposed to join her father for dinner. He was finally finished with his last case and, for once, he wanted to spend time with his daughter. "See you later D'." The young woman told him and started to walk away from him.
"Later Sash'." Derek replied and walked out of the school.
Derek, Scott and Stiles were pouring ice into a steel tub filled with water. Isaac and Sasha were leaning against the door, watching them when the veterinarian approached them.
"Obviously, it's not going to be particularly comfortable. But if we can slow your heart rate down enough you'll slip into a trancelike state." Deaton explain to the beta.
"He'll be like hypnotized?" Sasha questioned him and they started to approach the tub.
"Exactly. He'll be half transformed. It'll let us access his subconscious mind." The veterinarian replied as Isaac kneeled next to the tub and tentatively touched a finger to the water.
"How slow does his heart need to be?" Scott asked him, concern in his voice.
"Very slow." Deaton said.
"How slow is very slow?" Derek questioned him.
"Nearly dead." He replied with a shrugged and everyone looked at him with worried.
"But it's safe, right?" Isaac quietly asked.
"Do you want me to answer honestly?" Deaton said and looked down at him.
"Not really." The beta mumbled.
A rubber snapping caught their attention. They all looked over to Stiles, who was pulling on a latex surgical gloves. Sasha couldn't help but chuckled and the mischief kid looked at her with incomprehension.
"What?" He asked her.
"Funny to see you playing with an insemination glove... For cows." She replied and Stiles immediately removed it, disgust written all over his face.
Then, they turned back their attention to Isaac. The beta seemed to be scared, but he was willing to do anything to help saving the rest of his pack. He removed his shirt and put his hands on the side of the pull.
"If it feels too risky, you don't have to do it." Derek told him sternly.
Isaac answered by stepping into the tub with a soft splash. He immediately started to shiver, took a few quick breaths to prepare and gave his Alpha a nod. Grabbing him by the arms, Scott and Derek plunged him into the ice-filled water. A second later, Isaac bursted up from the icy water, completely transformed, gasping and convulsing from the cold.
"Get him back under." Deaton ordered and both werewolf pushed him beneath the swirling ice. Seeing them struggling to keep him submerged, Stiles and Sasha clutched at his ankles. "Hold him." The veterinarian added.
"We're trying." Derek said through gritted teeth as Isaac's eyes snapped open, glowing yellow.
The beta struggled for a while and strangled gasps came from his throat, but then, finally, his body relaxed. His breath slowed, he slipped back amid the ice and closed his eyes.
"Now remember, only I talk to him. Too many voices will confuse him and draw him out." Deaton whispered to the others. "Isaac? Can you hear me?" He asked him when his eyes moved under the lids as if dreaming.
"Yes. I can hear you." He replied, his voice shaking from the cold.
"This is Dr. Deaton. I'd like to ask you a few questions. Is that all right?" The veterinarian said in a calming voice.
"Yes, it's all right." Isaac agreed.
"I want to ask you about the night you found Erica and Boyd." Deaton began to say. "I want you to remember it for me in as vivid detail as possible. Like you were actually there again." He continued calmly.
"No...No, I don't want to do that... I don't want to do that!" The beta tensed and tried to rise from the water.
Derek and Scott gently pressed him back, but he began to struggle.
"It's all right, Isaac. They're just memories. You can't be hurt by a memory." Deaton said, trying to calm him and it worked. Isaac eased back down and seemed to relax again. "So let's go back to that night. To the place you found Erica and Boyd. Can you tell me what you see? Is it some kind of building? A house?" He asked him.
"It's not a house. It's stone. Maybe marble." Isaac said and Derek glanced at Deaton.
"That's perfect. Can you give me any other descriptors?" The veterinarian continued to ask him in a calm voice.
"It's dusty. Empty." The beta replied.
"Like an abandoned building?" Deaton said, but didn't receive an answer. "Isaac?" He called him.
"Someone's here." Isaac said as his hand wraps around Scott's wrist.
"Isaac, relax." Deaton told him and Sasha came closer to her friend. The young woman forcefully took his hand in hers and it seemed to calm him as his breath slowed down.
"They're here... they're coming." The beta whispered.
"They can't hurt you. It's just a memory. Your memories can't hurt you." The veterinarian said, reassuring him. "Just relax. Good. Now tell us what you see. Tell us everything." He added.
For the next minutes, Isaac told them about what he saw and heard. Erica and Boyd were worried about what they could to, worried they would hurt each other during the full moon.
Then, Isaac started to panic and Derek, seeing his beta in distress, started to talk to him, but it didn't help. The teenager was breathing heavily, completely freaked out and the Alpha was yelling, trying to find more information.
"His heart rate...he could go into shock." Deaton shouted at Derek.
"Derek, let him go." Scott tried to reason him.
"Where are you? What did you see?" The Alpha shouted again, his voice thundering at Isaac.
"A vault... it's a vault... a bankvault." Isaac screamed.
Water splashed everywhere and the beta jerked up from the tub. He was totally alert and excited, completely out of the trance.
"I know where they are. I saw it. I saw the name." He told them proudly.
Derek and Scott helped him out of the tub and Deaton threw a towel around his shoulder. Sasha was staring blankly at the wall and Stiles put his hand on her shoulder in a comforting way.
"Beacon Hills First National. It's an abandoned bank. They've been keeping them in a vault. Locked inside." Isaac said and looked at the subdued reactions of everyone. "What? What's wrong?" He asked, confused.
"You don't remember what you said right before you came out of it?" Stiles questioned him and the beta shook his head. "You said when they caught you, they dragged you into a room. And there was a body in it." He added sadly.
"What body?" Isaac asked.
"Erica. You said it was Erica." The mischief kid replied and looked at Sasha as a single tear rolled down her cheek.
"We need to find Boyd. Tonight." The young woman said, wiping her face.
Derek walked towards her and gently put his hand on her shoulder.
"Erica's not dead and you need to go before you're late. We'll find them." He told her. He didn't want her involved tonight, not if his beta was really dead and not if she couldn't heal. He couldn't bare the thought of her being hurt.
"But..." She began to say.
"Go Sasha. I'll keep you in the loop." The Alpha told her sternly and she finally agreed, much to the surprise of Scott and Stiles, who both looked at their interaction with incomprehension. Since when did she listen to Derek so easily?
