Lane's POV
There was now only three weeks left of tour and the shows and routines were the same every night. I did like touring, it was fun and kept me distracted. I couldn't help but be scared of returning home. If I did go home, I'd have no friends anymore other then Rory, and honestly she's more sibling then friend. I'd never tell her as much as I told Alex or get nearly as close. Being on the road meant I had plenty of people to keep me busy and entertained and even happy, but back in Columbus, I'd only have my parents and fake uncle to keep me company. I sat in the back lounge, my computer open for my school work as I was staring off into space. School bored me online and I missed going to a real school. After my mom I couldn't handle being around that many people, though. And it's not like my dad ever cared what I did.
As I continued ignoring my school work and thinking about what home really was now, how different it had become, someone knocked on the frame of the doorway. "How's your work going?" Tyler asked as he walked in and sat next to me. I leaned into his side and put my head on his shoulder. "Fine, I can get it done in the next few minutes. Online school is really starting to bore me." I saw Tyler look down to me. "Well after tour maybe we can enroll you somewhere, if you're ready to go back of course. You probably have enough credits so you can just focus on music electives or whatever you wanted to do." I nodded and smiled a little to myself at the thought of going back to a real school, making real friends that wasn't just Alex. "We gotta get ready for the show tonight. Ready?" I nodded again as I collected my computer and books to bring into the venue. Tyler extended his hand, which I gladly accepted, and pulled me up off the ground as we walked into the venue. The show was like every night, the fans all screaming lyrics back to the creators of the songs, me included. I would never get tired of tour, but it was coming to a close soon.
-----
Tonight was the final show in Los Angeles and Jenna was flying down to see the final tour stop. Before that though, Tyler and Josh had an acoustic set in a small coffee shop. We made our way down the street and into the cafe, being greeted immediately with fans. I've avoided direct contact with fans since the night I got slammed into a wall by one of them. I knew they weren't all like that, but I wasn't going out of my way to prove that theory correct.
Tyler set up his stuff in the front corner of the room as Josh went to get coffee for all of us and I sat up against the wall towards the back of the shop. Someone's shadow draped over me and when I looked up, I was shocked to see that it wasn't Josh. "Hey, you're Lane right? Tyler's daughter?" I nodded and smiled before standing up and shaking the boy in front of me's out stretched hand. "Yep, that's me." The boy had light brown, nearly blonde, hair and dark skin. His eyes were a weird greyish blue that I had never seen in my life. "Your eyes are amazing," I said, quickly covering my mouth and cursing myself silently for such a weird comment. The boy laughed before removing my hand from my mouth for me. "It's okay, thank you. I love your hair if it makes you feel better." I chuckled a little and smiled. His name was Andrew and he lived only twenty or so minutes from us in Columbus but was staying here for few months to help his family out.
Our conversation continued as Josh walked up with coffees in hand. He handed me one and I introduced him to Andrew. "Dude, I love your drumming," he complimented while blushing slightly. Josh thanked him and carried on small talk for awhile. Eventually, Tyler was about to start. "Hey, can I see your phone for a second?" Andrew asked me as I handed him my phone and patiently waited for him to put his number in. "I'm coming tonight, maybe I'll see you there?" I nodded and smiled as he waved and walked away. Something about him reminded me of Alex, but like a different side of him I never really got to see. Josh nudged my shoulder, waking me from my thoughts.
"You've been staring at the table and smiling for like a minute straight. Either you really needed caffeine, or someone likes Andrew." I laughed and playfully hit his shoulder. "I think you underestimate my love of caffeine here." Josh laughed along before turning his attention to Tyler at the mic stand. After a few songs, Tyler asked me to join and sing a few. It was a new level of relationship that Ty and I had reached. He and Jenna always had to see me at my absolute worse. But, since the tour was ending, I've been different. I've been the person I was before even my mother died, and I thought that person died with her that night.
"Thank you guys very much. I hope to see some of you tonight!" With that, Tyler and I left, Josh stringing along after us and we went back to the buses, opening the door to see Jenna sitting on the couch. Her and Tyler hugged first, and it made me smile thinking that real love did exist, that the love I grew up with isn't what love is supposed to be. Once they pulled apart, Jenna and I's eyes met and she smiled wide. We basically tackled each other in a hug. "I'm so proud of you, Lane" she whispered into my tangley mess of blue hair. I knew that she knew about the punching the wall thing, the nightmares and scratching, basically every demon I had encountered on this tour. And even after all of it, she was still proud? "Thank you Mom," I said back to her. I felt her face pull up into a wider smile at that. They loved being called Mom and Dad still, mainly because I haven't used it much out loud. Of course I thought of them as my parents, but there just weren't many chances to say it in context. Jenna and Josh hugged next, quicker then Ty or I but just as happy to see one another.
Eventually we all walked into the venue and prepared for the show. I was being given a chance to perform an acoustic song by myself at the end of the night. I chose Take On the World by You me at Six, smiling brightly as people sang along and tears fell upon the faces in the crowd. As I finished strumming, I caught glimpse of the face I met earlier at the coffee shop. Andrew stood there smiling and wiping away a tear of his own as our eyes met and he gave me a thumbs up. In that moment, he was almost exactly like the best friend I lost, and while on any other occasion it may have broke me, for some reason, tonight I smiled. "Thank you everybody. This tour has been amazing for every single one of us. We have all had our ups and downs, and there were some points where I thought I'd never make it through, but I did, because all of you kept the boys and I pushing. Thank you Los Angeles. Please welcome your bands from the night, twenty one pilots, Panic! at the Disco, and Fall Out Boy!" I turned and lifted my hand as the members sprinted out. Tyler and Josh both hugged me before the encore started and in only a matter of minutes, the last tour stop of my first ever tour was complete.
We got into cars to go to Brendon's house where we were all staying for a night or two. I sat in the back seat by myself, waiting for everyone else to come out. I looked at the picture I carried in my phone case of Alex and I from a dance we went to together. I smiled at it, remembering how he got me a bouquet of lilies. "I hope you're proud of me Alex. That's all I'd ever want in this world anymore."
