You and Draco Malfoy have been friends since the first year when you met on the train.  It's now March of fifth year and you two have been practically inseparable.  You were and are always together.  You always have all the same classes, sit at each and every meal together, spend your breaks together, and you cheer Draco on in Quidditch even if he loses.  Everything is absolutely perfect.

"Hey, y/n!" Draco says, coming down the stairs from his dormitory.

"Draco!" you shout.  You jump up and hug him tightly with a wide smile.  You both let go and he smiles down at you.  Pansy Parkinson, walking up from the girls' dorms shoots you a hateful look.  Ugh.  Pug Face is jealous again! you think to yourself with an eye roll.

"Let's go to breakfast y/n," Draco says.  You follow him out of the dungeons to the Great Hall.  You sit down next to each other across from Crabbe and Goyle, who already have piled their plates high with pancakes and french toast with globs of butter and pools of sticky, amber syrup.

"Wow, Crabbe, Goyle.  How do you two eat so much every day without being sick?" you gasp, spreading jam on two pieces of toast, one for yourself and one for Draco.  You hand Draco his toast and he hands you and orange juice.

"Hey, you all," Blaise Zabini says, taking a seat next to you.  "Hey, y/n."

"Good Morning, Blaise," you reply over everyone else's grunts of acknowledgement through full mouths of food.  Blaise always has had a crush on you, but you were never interested.  He was Blaise, after all.... You all sit at breakfast together and take about Quidditch, Professor McGonagall's latest essay and the latest of Umbridge's Proclamation: no music to be played during study hours.

"As a music lover, that's going to be difficult for me," you say.  "I always work with music.  I don't think background noise or people talking will do."

Everyone else nods in agreement and then continue the conversation.  You all eventually get up and go your separate ways.  It's a Sunday.  No classes today for anyone.

"Do you want to take a walk with me around the grounds?  As a member of the Inquisitorial Squad and a Prefect, I have to do a patrol at least twice a day.  You know the drill by now, y/n.  School rules," Draco says with a shrug.

"I'd like that," you reply.  You follow Draco through the corridors, scanning the area for any rule breakers or any banned items such as the Weasley Twins' products, Weasley's Wizard Wheezes.

"Ten points from Ravenclaw, first year.  The Quibbler is a banned newsprint at Hogwarts," Draco says to a small brown-haired girl.

He reaches out and snatches her magazine from her and stows it in his pocket in a huff.  He points down the hall aggressively and she runs away.  You two continue to walk out into the courtyard.  Draco stops in his tracks.  Across the courtyard stand Potter, Granger and Weasley.

"Come with me, y/n," Draco says, a grin breaking across his face.  "I think we ought to have a nice little chat with them."

Draco struts over to them, his cloak swaying behind him and you two stop right in front of the trio.

"Well, well.  If it isn't Mudblood, Weasleby and the Chose One," he chuckles calmly.

"Shove off, Malfoy," Weasley snaps at Draco.  "Can't you see you're not welcome?"

"Get away from us, Malfoy," Potter shouts, obviously befuddled by Draco's presence.

Draco scoffs.

"I'm done putting up with you and your bullshit.  I'm also done with the horrible, greasy, ugly little band of people you call 'friends', Malfoy!"

"Well, Potter, I see no reason why you should care about who my friends are.  At least I have some.  I definitely wouldn't call that and Weasley to be good enough to be counted as a full friend.  They're both about an eighth of a friend tops."

Potter clenches his fists.  I can see the anger in his eyes.

"Hmmm..  Did something just happen to your face?  There's something wrong with it, Potter...  It looks like you set it on fire and someone tried to put it out with a cactus...," Draco replies, smirking.

"Draco.  We should leave," you whisper in his ear pleadingly.

"Not, yet, y/n," Draco replies, smirking.

"Get away from us!  Go bother someone else, you!" Granger shouts taking Potter's hand, attempting to drag him away from Draco.  "Let's go, Harry.  We need not waste our time with these people!"

"No!"

Potter tugs his hand back from Granger's grasp with a grunt.

"I want to give Malfoy a piece of my mind!"

Harry walks right up to Malfoy, looking right at him.

"We don't need you in our lives.  GET OUT OF HERE!  You only bother us because you're miserable and sick of you pathetic little lives.  And you!"

Harry turns towards you, his eyes glaring at you.

"You are one of the most awful people I have ever met in my life!  You are the bitchiest girl I have ever seen!  All you do is walk around with Malfoy causing trouble and make everyone else miserable!  I didn't think that that was possible after Parkinson, but NO!  You're here and you're rotten to the core, y/n," Potter says, his voice booming and exploding.

"You-" you start to say in retaliation but you're cut off by Draco rushing forward.  He tackles Potter and he falls hard on his back.  Hard.  Draco pins him down on the ground by the chest and shoulder.

"DON'T YOU DARE TALK ABOUT MY GIRLFRIEND LIKE THAT EVER AGAIN POTTER!  YOU DON'T EVEN DESERVE TO TALK ABOUT HER YOU PIECE OF HALF-BLOOD SCUM!  I OUGHT TO POUND YOU, YOU LITTLE SHIT!"

Potter wriggles under Draco's arms.  Draco after a moment releases him, his eyes still flaring with anger.  "Don't ever talk about her like that!  STAY AWAY FROM Y/N!"

Potter cowers and speed walks away.

"Are you okay, y/n?" Draco asks, breathing heavily.  You nod gently.

"Can I talk with you Draco?" you ask, staring into his silvery eyes again.  He nods intently, waiting for what you have to say.  "Alone, please?"

He grabs your hand gently.  His skin is so soft.   He pulls you down the hall and you both walk into an empty classroom.

"Thank you for standing up for me, Draco.  But, you know, you really didn't need to do that.  I appreciate your concern, really I do.  I can defend myself, though."

"I'm sorry, y/n.  I know you can.  You're one of the strongest people I've met.  You're just so important to me.  I just feel like I have to protect you sometimes.  I just care about you too much."

You nod softly and smile at him.

"About that, Draco.  When you were yelling at Potter....  You said something rather... odd.  I just wanted to ask you about it."

"What was it, y/n?" Draco asks, looking up at you with anticipation.

"You said, and I quote, 'don't you dare talk about my girlfriend like that," you repeat, putting extra emphasis on the word girlfriend.  Draco's face turned bright red. He shudders and starts to roughly comb his hands in his hair and hunches over, sitting down on a desk.

"I-I-I," he stammers.  You look at him and reach your hand out, attempting to take his hand, but he edges away from you shyly.  "I'm sorry, y/n.  It just slipped out.  I'm so embarrassed."

"There's no need to be, Draco!" you say, watching him panic about his actions.

"I've liked you for a long time now, y/n." he blurts out, eyes quivering. "I guess I convinced myself that we were together in my subconscious accidentally.  I'm so sorry y/n.  Please don't let this change anything with our friendship."

"Draco-"

"Please, y/n!  You're the only person who gets me!  You're the only real friend I've got..." Draco chokes on his words.  His emotions well up.  You can see it in his stormy eyes and after a long moment, he speaks again.  "Go ahead, y/n."

"Go ahead what, Draco?" you ask softly.

"Tell me we can't be friends anymore."

"What?"

"I always take the good things I have and ruing them just like I ruined our friendship.  Go ahead and tell me."

He looks into your eyes, waiting for you to break the news.  You calmly walk forward and cup his cheek with your hand gently.  You lean in and plant a soft kiss on his lips.  At first he's in shock.  You pull back.  Your lips feel tingly and you feel your cheeks flush light pink.

"W-what?" he gasps, attempting to comprehend what just happened in vain.

"You know, Draco.  I've always liked you," you say.  His eyes flare up and he swiftly grabs your waist and pulls him onto his lap.

"Will you be my girlfriend, y/n?" he asks, beaming down at you.

"Of course, you idiot!"

He grips you around your waist and kisses you passionately on the lips.  You start to slowly kiss pack, matching his passion.  His tongue slides into your mouth and tangles with yours.  You feel a swooping motion inside your stomach and smile at him through the kiss.  You couldn't possibly be any happier.
