B***h!" I accused her. "You knew Peter and Nathan didn't get along!"

"I didn't know you didn't told your boyfriend you were going to a concert with another guy." She said. "I would've kept my mouth shut."

I put my hands on the table and leaned in towards with the deadliest death glare I could muster. She looked scared. Good, that B***h better be f**king scared cause she woke up the old Melinda that didn't take shit from anyone.

"I don't know what your game is Lucy but it's clear you don't want to be my friend. I don't know if it's payback because Nathan chose me but this is clearly not working out. You can take your fake friendship and shove it up your bulimic ass." I said every word slowly so she could understand since her brain didn't work like a normal person's.

She glared.

"Seems to me Nathan is having second doubts about choosing you." She smirked.

I blinked.

"And what would you care? You have a fiancé?" I nodded towards Devlin.

Lucy got up and I straighten up. Devlin looked at me, I felt his eyes on me.

"Have a nice day." Lucy said and walked out totally ignoring my question.

Devlin followed but not before giving me a wink again. This was all too weird. Lucy was supposed to be in love with Devlin. Why does she want Nathan and I to fight? Maybe... maybe it's payback but not from Lucy... not entirely... Devlin.

That f**ker. He got Lucy on his side and his mission was to break up me and Nathan so Nathan can suffer his pain. Peter and I were just pawns to pull of his revenge.

I needed to hear comforting words from someone. I didn't check the time and just dialed Linda's number and Maya's. They both answered.

We did the three way.

I explained what happened.

About the concert, the kiss and how Lucy 'subtly' pointed out I went to the concert.

"That devious B***h," Linda gasped. "She totally did that on purpose!"

"I know! But why?!" I exclaimed. "But she's the least of my worries. Nathan is mad at me but I don't think he should be mad."

"You kissed Peter." Linda pointed out.

"Nah-uh." Maya said. "He kissed her and she pushed him away!"

"Exactly." I said.

"But you still kissed him and you went to a concert and to a Muse concert. That was your guys' thing, wasn't it?" Linda asked.

"Well yeah..." Then I heard them yawn. "What time is it over there?" I asked.

"Like... seven or eight." Maya had been the one to yawn.

"Oh, crap. Sorry guys I keep forgetting about the time difference." I smacked myself. "We'll talk later."

"No." They both said.

"We're friends and we're here for you." Linda said.

"Amigas por siempre, que no?" Maya said in Spanish. (Friends forever, right?)

"Por siempre." I agreed. (Forever.)

"Now, you need to let Nathan cool off and he'll come back, all right?" Maya said.

"Yeah, that boy loves you too much to stay mad." Linda added.

"I hope so." I said.

Ding Dong.

"Someone's at my door." I said. "Maybe it's him, I'll call later."

I hung up and jogged to the door. I looked through the peep hole but it wasn't Nathan. I opened the door. It was a flower delivery.

"Melinda Gomez?" The guy asked with the bouquet of red tulips.

"Yes." I said.

"These are for you." He handed them over. I took them. "And a song to go along..."

"Excuse me?" I said. "I thi-think you're mistaken."

"You said you were Melinda Gomez right?" The guy asked.

I nodded. "Yeah but..."

"Well this is from a secret admire..."

"Love of mine some day you will die But I'll be close behind I'll follow you into the dark No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white Just our hands clasped so tight Waiting for the hint of a spark If heaven and hell decide That they both are satisfied Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you When your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black

And I held my tongues as she told me "Son fear is the heart of love" So I never went back If heaven and hell decide That they both are satisfied Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you When your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see From Bangkok to Calgary And the soles of your shoes are all worn down The time for sleep is now It's nothing to cry about Cause we'll hold each other soon The blackest of rooms If heaven and hell decide That they both are satisfied

Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you When your soul embarks

Then I'll follow you into the dark Then I'll follow you into the dark."

"Do you know who it is?" I asked.

"Just the messenger ma'am." He said and I signed the clipboard and he left.

I closed the door and set the flowers on the dining table. I saw the card inside. I took it out and read it.

It was a sonnet. One I recognized.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer's lease hath all too short a date:

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade

Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;

Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,

When in eternal lines to time thou growest:

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

SNAP! SNAP!

I blinked and came back to reality.

Marcela looked at me worried.

"Are you all right?"

I nodded and she gave me a long took before she went on walking. It was Monday and no word from Nathan. Did we really break up? Was it 'just time'? I hated being in the dark about this. I'll admit I was at fault for keeping HIM in the dark but this whole thing blew out of proportion.

And about the flowers and the song? I called Peter asking him if he did it turns out it wasn't. So I'm in the dark about THAT. Not like I cared at the moment. My relationship was in trouble. I wasn't myself at work.

I didn't know what to do. Should I call him? Should I wait for him to call me or should I just be the bigger person and do it myself? But of course being Mexican means having pride. I was going to wait for him to come to me.

This was distracting my work but I tried to do my best to be myself. At lunch I picked my salad as my friends ranted about their great weekend.

"So I met this guy at the club," Alondra started. "And we're going on a date on Friday, he's so hot!"

"Was it that guy with dark hair and cute smile?" Marcela asked Alondra.

"Charles! He's so adorable." Alondra sighed deeply. "Charles Watson."

I perked my head up. "Charles Watson?"

Alondra turned to me. "You know him?"

I nodded. "At least I think I do, when he introduced himself did he say 'Hey, name's Watson, Charles Watson and I'm about to make your dream a reality' and then gesture to himself?"

Alondra nodded. "I was a bit drunk so I thought it was cute."

"He's Peter's little brother. He's a great guy." I smiled for her.

"Speaking of Peter," Marcela started. "Does--"

"Nathan knows." I sighed.

"How?" Marcela and Alondra asked.

"Long story short... Lucy." I assumed it up.

"How did she know?" Alondra asked.

"I forgot, all I know is that I haven't talked or seen Nathan since Saturday."

"Wow, it was that big of a fight, huh?" Alondra rubbed my back. "He'll be back, you'll see."

"Maybe, I don't know."

"Melinda, I've never seen a guy more in love than Nathan." Mike spoke up. We looked at him. "Oh yeah, I'm guy if you haven't noticed, I have penis and a heart." He joked and we laughed.

"I sometimes do forget you're a guy." Marcela admitted.

"Me too." I chuckled.

"No, seriously, Mels, Nathan is head over heels for you. Trust me on this." Mike touched my hand in a friendly way. "I'm a guy."

"We know that."

After lunch, and the pep talk with my friends I was feeling a lot better. My day started to look sunnier. I was going to put my head up and face the consequences of my mistakes. I lied to him and he felt betrayed and that he couldn't trust me, which is ridiculous to me but to him it meant something else.

I had to understand his side of the story. If he did the same to me I would be pissed too. It gave me a lot to think about. At the end of my shift at five I stared at my phone and weighed my options. I called his office first.

It rang twice before Lucy answered.

"Mr. Fullerton's office, how many I help you?"

"Lucy, it's Melinda... is uh, Nathan available?" I asked as I chewed the inside of my cheek.

"Actually you just missed him, he went home."

"Oh, all right." I hung up. She deserves it after ratting me out. I had confidence. I was going to make this work. I could swallow my pride if I had to, for Nathan I would do so much more. I was willing to make this work.

I went to the parking lot and found my car. It was always hard to remember where I parked but today I remembered. I heard screeching and at first I thought it was just a car making a wrong turn. I turned to see a SUV racing towards me. I was at the trunk side of the car and if I didn't move soon I would be squashed between the two.

My body froze and I tried to make my feet move but I just couldn't. I heard my name being called and I was tackled to the ground and we rolled over until I was out of danger. He, yes he because I smelled the AXE, hovered over me, protecting me in a way.

I clang to the whoever's body tightly. I was just about to be squashed. I was about to die!

"You all right, lass?" God, I knew that accent. I let go of Devlin. He was hovering over me and his face was extremely close. I could see his beautiful green eyes. They were green with a hint of hazel in them. "Melinda!" He snapped me back. "Are you all right?"

I nodded slowly. He cupped my cheek and moved it side to side to check for damage.

"Some minor scratches, but you'll be all right." He whispered. He stood up and I sat up and saw the damage. Devlin helped me up and held me by the waist. I was still a bit shocked from what just happened.

I looked to see the driver. There was a lady in the front and she was bleeding. I got away from Devlin, I noticed my ankle hurt a bit but I went to check on the lady. I opened the driver's door and saw that even though the bag blew up it still caused her damage to the face. I noticed the lady was pregnant.

"Please," She begged. "Help me."

I saw the bleeding between her legs. Her jeans were covered in blood. I cursed.

"Devlin!" I yelled for him but he was already besides me. "She's pregnant, we have to get her to the hospital. Can you carry her?"

He moves his sleeves up to his elbows and he leans over and removes the seat belt. She cried out in pain when Devlin moved her, but there was no time to waste. She and the baby were in trouble.

Devlin easily carried her. He made it look like she was a feather instead of a nine month old pregnant woman. I ran ahead and called for a stretcher. Help was fast and before Devlin could reach the emergency entrance the lady was in a stretcher.

I held her hand the entire way to the maternity floor and Devlin was with me. The doctor began to ask questions. I didn't know much except that she was an accident. The doctor told me to get checked in case I had some stuff broken.

"I want to stay with her." I told the doctor.

"First you need to get yourself checked, I'll keep you inform, Ms. Gomez." The doctor smiled at me. Once we reached the maternity floor I went to Dr. Abigail and asked her to check on the lady and she agreed.

"But you need to get checked first." She insisted.

Finally I walked into a doctor's office. He started to ask questions and the entire time Devlin was with me. I forgot about him. I winched when the doctor checked my ankle.

"Hmm, it seems you've twisted it, but nothing serious." He smiled at me. "I'll just wrap it and stay off it for three or five days."

"Does this count as sick leave?" I asked the doctor and he laughed. I was serious.

"You're lucky to be alive, my girl." He checked my face. "I assume he's the gentleman that tackled out of the way." He spoke of Devlin.

"Yeah." I muttered.

He looked back and forth between me and Devlin. "I'll be back to wrap your ankle." He walked out of the room.

Devlin wasn't looking at me anymore, he was more interested at the post of a vagina.

"How long has it been since you've seen one? You seem pretty much into the poster, want some alone time?" I joked and he turned to me. "Lucy mustn't be doing her job, then."

He laughed sincerely. Other times it was forced but this one was true.

"Is that your way of saying 'Thank you for saving my life'?"

I sighed. "Thank you, Devlin, for saving my life."

He nodded accepting my thank you. He walked over to me and sat down on the bed.

"What were you doing there anyways?" I asked as I moved to make some space between him and I.

He shrugs. "Visiting."

I raised an eyebrow and before I could ask anymore the doctor walked back in and wrapped my right ankle. When he was done, Devlin easily picked me up and set me down gently on the floor but not enough that my right foot was entire on the floor.

It wasn't bad enough that I need crotches, plus I had dandy Devlin to help me as I moved. I went to the nurses station in the maternity floor and asked about the lady in the car. Dr. Abigail walked out from the operation.

"The baby's stable but the mother... might not make it the night. It all depends on her now."

I felt bad for the baby. The baby's mother was going to possibly pass away before it could meet it's mother.

"It's a girl, the baby." Dr. Abigail read my mind.

"Does the woman have a husband or relatives?" I asked.

"Not that I know of at the moment." Dr. Abigail looked down to my ankle and then to Devlin. "I guess you'll be out for a few days."

I nodded. "Doctors orders." I mumbled and she chuckled.

"Get well, dear. I'll keep you updated, go home." She walked to get rid of the scrubs.

"Devlin would you mind--"

"No problem." Devlin answered my question.

I gave him a heart warming smile. He helped me get to his car by carrying me the entire way bridal style. I just hoped people didn't get the wrong idea about him and I. His car hadn't been too far from mine, that explained why he was so close.

The tow trucks were working on my car. I liked that car. Now I had to deal with the insurance and other crap. The ride to my apartment was quiet but not awkward. It was a comfortable silence.

He turns on the music and Chris Brown comes on. I was surprised.

"What?" He asked noticing I had been surprised.

"You do know he beat up his girlfriend?"

He shrugged. "I like his music."

I giggled. "Me too, it's just sad his career isn't going to be the same anymore."

"I know. He f**ked up big time."

"He was going to be as big as Michael Jackson." I sighed. "What fame does to you, huh?"

"Makes you think you can get away with anything." He agreed.

The first real conversation I had with Devlin. Freaky.

"Careful!" I squeaked when Devlin lowers me to the couch. "Thanks."

"No problem." He said sitting on the coffee table. "I believe a reward is in order." He smirked.

I raised an eyebrow and chuckled. "A thank you wasn't enough for you?"

"It's never enough." He grinned and I rolled my eyes at him.

"Who were you visiting in the hospital?" I asked.

"My grandmother." His tone changed. At least I knew he cared about his family.

I wanted to ask a question that's been on my mind for a while now. I didn't know if it was the right time but it didn't look like he was leaving anytime soon.

"Are you a mobster?" I blurted out and I looked into his intense green eyes with a hint of hazel in them. Now that I could see clearly it wasn't hazel, more like a golden color. " And more importantly, are you really marrying Lucy?"

He didn't answer at me. He just looked at me. There wasn't a certain expression he just looked at me.

"You have chocolate brown eyes." He grinned changing the subject.

"Don't change the subject." I waved my finger and he laughed.

"Yes and yes." He answered.

I didn't know which surprised me more, that was a mobster or that he was going to actually marry the hag from hell. I shifted myself so I was sitting up straighter.

"Does Lucy know what you do?"

He nods.

"I take you and Nathan still aren't speaking."

I looked away from him and to the wall across from me and glared at it. "Thanks to your fiancée."

He chuckled and I just continued to glare at the wall across from me.

"It's kind of your fault as well." He pointed out.

"I know! But he didn't have to find out... ever."

"Is there really something going on between--"

"NO!" I answered before he could finish.

"You have no feelings whatsoever for Peter?"

"As a friend or a brother... but never anything more." I answered truthfully.

"Have you told him?"

"A thousand times, but he won't listen." I frowned.

Devlin started to wonder around my place. I found it kind of rude since he didn't ask me. He looked around and stopped at the bouquet of red tulips.

"The perfect lover." He said as his fingers touched one of the tulips. He took one from the bouquet and smelled it. He walked back to the coffee table. He also had the card in his fingers. "Shakespeare."

"Yeah," I said.

"Peter?" He raised an eyebrow and I shook my head.

"I don't know, I asked him and he said he didn't send anything."

"I could find out if you want." He offered.

"Ehh, I rather not."

"What if it's a stalker?" He said with a serious tone.

"I highly doubt it. I don't talk to that many people outside the hospital."

"Kind of pathetic." He said and I smacked his arm.

"I have a life for your information!"

"Yeah and his name is Nathan."

I couldn't argue with that. We locked eyes and he was smiling at me sincerely, at least I hope it was sincere. There was several knocks on my door. Okay more like pounding. It made me jump and Devlin got into defense position. I saw him reached behind him.

"You have a gun?!" I hissed in a whisper.

"Always prepared." He shrugged. "Are you expecting anyone?"

I shook my head. I heard the cocking of the gun.

"MELINDA!!!" I recognized that yell.

"Hide that gun." I hissed. "I think it's one of my brothers."

He raised an eyebrow and walked to the front door and checked the peep hole.

"There's a bunch of people outside." He opened the door.

"Melin--who are you?" That was my father.

"Papa!" I yelled and I saw as my father passed Devlin and into the apartment. He saw me and immediately sat down where Devlin had been.

Others came in as well and they surrounded me. Everyone and I mean everyone was there: my mom, dad, brothers, Linda, Maya, Jeff and Brian. The began to ask a million
