Danny stared at the blank wall in front of him, his mind racing so fast that he knew he wouldn't be able to sleep. Still, he knew that he should at least try for a little longer.
"I'm lonely when you're asleep all day." you once told him after he had slept for a full 17 hours. Since then, he tried to fix his sleep schedule as much as he could.
Danny reached over to the bedside table and popped two melatonins into his mouth. He gulped down the rest of his water and felt the cold liquid run down his throat. After a few minutes he still didn't feel anywhere close to drowsy.
"Maybe I should just hit myself over the head with a book and call it a day. That would makes this so much easier." he muttered to himself.
He closed his eyes for a second, then heard the bedroom door creak open. When he looked over he saw your outline in the dim light.
"Sorry, my dearest. I thought you were asleep." you whispered, "Just thought I would join you."
Danny gave you a small smile, and rolled over to the other side of the bed.
"You haven't missed that much. I've been drowning in my thoughts for the past hour."
"Anything I can do to help?" you asked, climbing into bed.
"I don't know. I've mostly been thinking about the future, playing out possible outcomes of my many decisions. Etcetera, etcetera."
His back was facing you, so you wrapped your arms around his waist and kissed his shoulder.
"Well, no matter what happens you know that I'll always be here to support you. And I know that when the time comes you'll choose the best path."
Your warm breath sent butterflies through his stomach, being held by you was enough to settle his mind a bit.
He took hold of your hand and rubbed your knuckles with his thumb.
"Love, I must be the luckiest person. Having someone as wonderful as you by my side."
"I could say the same about you, my dearest."
You planted one last sleepy kiss behind his ear, and together you drifted into sleep.

Danny jerked awake, searching for you in the tangle of bedsheets. Once he was able to sort out the difference between dream and reality his chest was flooded with a deep, crushing pain. He broke down crying, his sobs shook his whole body.
You weren't there to hold him. He had lost you. You were gone.
