Your name: (Y/N)
"Ok, I think everything is packed", mum proclaimed, shoving the last suitcase into the car boot with a great amount of force. She glanced back at the house door, idling for her daughter to mosey her way through it. "(Y/N)! Hurry up, we need to catch up with the Moving Van".
I let out an irritated huff, leaning on the door frame with my bulky backpack strap firmly gripped in my hand. My mum and I are actually moving. Something I really didn't expect to happen. It all happened so suddenly too. One day everything was normal. I was going to school, hanging out with my friends, like any ordinary teen would do. A week later, my room is completely bare as all my belongings were now in boxes. I attempted everything to persuade mum to stay. I even suggested getting an after school job to help her with rent. But she wasn't in a proper state to get a more productive job and she didn't want me struggling to balance my school work and my occupational work.
I slipped my arms through the backpack straps, securely carrying it. I stepped outside, shutting the door firmly behind me, taking one last glance at the house. My mother gave me an eye roll at my melodramatic behaviour. "Come on, stop moping and get in the car", she instructed me, opening the door and entering the vehicle.
As I began to buckle my seatbelt, my mum started to activate the GPS and typing in our new location. My mum could see from the rearview mirror that I was still bestowing the same problematic pout I was five minutes ago. "Trust me, you're going to love Beach City! It's the perfect place for us!", my mum promptly consoled me from the front seat. "When you were little, you loved everything to do with the ocean. Now that we're so close to it, you can spend all day in the water".
I frowned out the window in exasperation. That's how mum always saw me. As a little kid that never grows up. I just turned fifteen and she treats me like I'm five. "Mum, I don't have as much time as I did when I was little", I muttered to her, with my heated breath fogging up the window I was facing.
My mum sighed, gripping on the car keys, turning them and starting the car.
My vision was pretty blurry when I woke up. But I was able to see a couple of bright, luminous streetlights. At the front of my mum's grip on the steering wheel grew tighter and tighter every second we were on the road. I could see her entire body trembling from my perspective. I wanted to comfort her, but my body was too drowsy to cooperate with my brain. We suddenly came to a red light. Mum started babbling something. I didn't exactly know what. She leisurely turned her head to face me. Something wasn't right. In her bright blue eye, there was a man. A man reflected in her dark, dusky orbs. He stood there, glancing at me. Gawking into my soul. I couldn't move. My heart stopped. I felt like I was suffocating on my own pant. What is happening?
I was woken up by someone continuously poking my shoulder. The sunlight reflected through the glass window, shinning directly on my groggy eyelids. My mum stood over me, somewhat blocking the light from my face. "You dozed off the entire ride", she chuckled, gripping on my hand and hauling me up. I observed the view of the city from inside the car. I had to say, it was pretty isolated. Barely anyone was on the streets and it was the middle of the day. I hopped out the car as my mum began to remove our luggage from the boot. "I think we should be ok to leave the car here", mum spoke, leaving me my suitcase to take with me. I clutched onto the handle and pulled my suitcase across the parking lot.
Walking through the city wasn't too bad. Despite the solitude, Beach City was a tranquillize place. The very small amount of people who happened to be out and about were relatively friendly. Giving me a warm smile or a friendly wave.
After some time wandering across the shore, we found an average-sized house, sitting perfectly next to the peak leading to a Lighthouse. It was near town and had a pretty good view of the ocean and sandy coast. Mum knelt down to a petite stone next to our new mailbox. She flipped it over, exposing a small, golden key.
Mum unlocked the front door and pushed the door open. The inside wasn't awful. It was a little dusty, but doable. Leaving my suitcase by the door and slipping my backpack off my shoulders, I took the liberty to observe our new home. "Not bad, eh?", mum smiled, peering down at me, urging for my judgment. I shrugged, curving up my lip. "It's all right, I guess", I muttered loud enough for my mum to hear. She shook her head mediocrely, placing hands on her hips. "Energetic as always", she uttered beneath her breath, glancing away.
"So, here's what's going to happen", mum spoke, blowing away some dust particles from the window frame. "While I unpack, you go out and make some new friends". I sent mum a disapproving frown followed by a mild grunt.
"Mum, I can't just snap my fingers a command random kids to be my friend", I asserted, huffing at my mother's optimism. Mum presses her lips into a thin line shrugging obliviously like a toddler being asked a math question. "Are you sure? It always worked for me", she joked, vaguely noticing that I was not giggling with her. Mum stood substantially outside the house, waiting for me to turn the corner. I murmured at my luck and walked off.
I gazed around the city, on the lookout for some desolate kid, roughly my age in need of a temporary companion. I genuinely didn't feel like doing anything other than walking around the town to traverse. But, it didn't take long for me to start detecting a low, grumbled noise. It was my stomach. I hadn't really eaten anything today. I was too busy packing up my stuff and I was paranoid that I would leave something behind. Starving, I glanced around for the closest place to eat.
Then, something caught my eye. 'The Big Donut'. Kind of a basic name. But my belly continued to make dissatisfied sounds. Which made me give in and walk inside.
The door dinged as I pushed it open. There, stood around a 17 to 18-year-old female. She head perked up at the sound of the door and turned to face me, before granting me a tender smile. "Welcome to The Big Donut!", she approached the counter, dusting her hands on her pants. "What can I get for you?".
I glimpsed at the glass frame, containing different flavoured iced treats. I hummed, abruptly remembering how indecisive I was. Ultimately, I pointed at the chocolate glazed doughnut with rainbow sprinkles, pressing the tip of my finger on the half-pint case. "One of those, please", I graciously asked.
She nodded and gripping onto her tongs to pick up the pastries and slide them into a paper bag. Her orbs glistened with interest as she split her gaze from the bag to me multiple times. "I've never seen you around town before", she finally had the audacity to state.
"I'm new", I somewhat grunted at the words. "I just moved here. Like 10, 15 minutes ago". She grinned, folding the bag closed. "Well I assure you, you'll find this town very comfortable".
I glanced out the window, peering past the pane. I raised a brow, facing back to the employee. "Is the town always this...Remote?", I tilted my head.
She let out her breath audibly, bestowing a tinge of sorrow as she tapped her fingers on the counter in a rhythmic beat. "We're kind of short on citizens. We're not really a well-known town", she lamented.
The lady abruptly struck her hand on her forehead, questioning her ignorance. "How rude of me! I forgot to ask your name", she said, shaking her head.
I slightly grinned, leaning my arm on the counter, "It's (Y/N)".
"My name is Sadie", she smiled. "Sadie Millers". She placed the bag on a stool next to her and stretched her hand across. I shook her hand from the other side of the counter, beaming insignificantly. Sadie picked the bag back up and handed it to me. I grabbed it, firmly gripping it with both hands.
"That'll be $1.79". I stretched into my pocket, digging past the packets of chewing gum and lint, before grabbing a handful of my loose change. I counted the amount I needed and handed it to Sadie. She took my coins, storing them in the cash register. "Enjoy your new home. And don't be a stranger", she waved, sending me one more tender smile before I left.
I bit into the chocolate doughnut, relishing the flavour as I strolled across the white, sandy beach. So far I've earned myself a doughnut and possible acquaintance, but no new friends.
I took another bite
I walked fairly close to the tip of the shore where the waves impacted onto the sand. But, not so close that my feet were stepping in the water.
I went in to take another bite, when--
I suddenly clashed straight into someone's chest, causing me to topple backwards and fall in the water. I rubbed the liquid from my eyelids and nonchalantly sat up, attempting to reacquire focus. I was soaked in seawater, and although it was only ankle-deep, that didn't stop me from feeling a raging emotion in the pit of my stomach. I glanced up, intuitively scowling at the klutzy jerk who couldn't watch where they were going.
It was a boy.
He had frizzy brown hair and full black irises. He wore a pink T-shirt with a gold star in the centre of it. With cuffed blue jeans and salmon-pink flip-flop sandals.
He didn't say anything. He just stood there gawking at me sitting in the water with a puzzled expression depicted on him. I could tell he wanted to speak but was stammering over his words. Before I could give him a piece of my mind, he rushed back in a different direction, leaving me in the water like an idiot.
It took me some time to process what the heck just happened. A boy just body slammed me, and then left without saying anything? I glimpsed down at what was my doughnut. But was now a mushy, half-eaten snack floating off with the current.
The boy was nowhere in sight. All that was left was the tracks of his sandals. I finally clasped back to reality as I stood up. From the waist down, seawater was dripping down me as I stood on the sand. Words could not describe how irritated I felt. "Argh! If I see him again...", I grunted, clutching a handful of the bottom of my shirt and compressing the water out of it.
