The first night in the glade was, if anything, scary. But it was also peaceful and quiet. It gave y/n a chance to process what really had happened during the past hours. Still, the peace also gave her time to despair.
The absence of memories was frustrating. Y/n could remember basic things about the world but nothing about herself. Now that she and the boys knew there names they all wanted more. Y/n had no memories surface in her dreams that first night, but that did not apply to all of the next nights she slept.
After waking up to the loud noise of the maze doors opening, the three teenagers got to work. They spoke about random things, not having anything to tell about themselves. They began sorting through the supplies.
And the work started there.
They planted a garden, found a well with drinkable water and investigated the wooden shack and forest. Alby used an axe they had found in the supplies to chop wood and make a fire each night. When the box came up after one week they understood that they could request certain supplies.
They built a basic fence with pre-cut wood, nails, and some chicken wire and the animals they requested were placed there. Throughout the time y/n noticed herself placing her blankets on the ground closer and closer to the boys each night. She enjoyed they're company. But one night everything changed.
Y/n woke up in the dark to sounds of heavy breathing and weak shouts. Her heart began to race and she sat up, looking around. Minho was having a nightmare.
Alby was awake as well, fidgeting around, looking at y/n in confusion.
Y/n felt sorry for Minho, seeing his contorted face and sweaty forehead. No matter how awkward it felt she crawled over and softly shook his shoulder. Alby approached Minho's sleeping form as well.
Y/n shook Minho a bit harder and he startled awake, on his feet in seconds, sending y/n onto her back in alarm. He was frantically looking around.
"It was just a nightmare dude" Alby whisper-yelled, then helped y/n up.
Minho looked at them, slowly melting from his daze. He apologized, but his face was still fear-stricken.
Y/n leaned forward and wrapped Minho in a tight hug before she could think twice of it. Alby placed his hands on both their shoulders.
Y/n could feel Minho's strong muscles under her grip and felt his hesitant hand against her back. But he melted into the touch. After that the youngsters were much closer.
The trio moved into the wooden shack for the nights after making some improvements to its structure. An every night campfire grew into tradition and they named the area they were stuck in The Glade.
Alby took the role of the leader of the group but helped y/n and minho around all the time anyways. For a moment y/n felt happy. She was used to this way of living now, and though she would never get used to the lack of personal memories she could find happiness with the two boys in the glade.
That was until the mark of the one month anniversary from their arrival. Y/n approached the box holding the new ladder they had constructed. The boys were already there.
The usual alarm went off and the concrete doors slid open revealing the metal net doors. Alby used a pole they had crafted to open one of the doors.
Just as y/n was about to lower the ladder into the metal cage, she heard something. Light breathing. Sniffles.
Y/n leaned to the side, staring into the box. The boys noticed it the same time as she did.
There was a boy in the box. He looked terrified, he was crying and trying to shield his eyes from the sun.
It was very odd seeing a new living and breathing human after a month of the company of only the three boys.
Y/n exchanged a nervous glance with Alby and Minho, then decided to climb down into the metal cage anyways.
"Who are you?" The new boy asked with a shaky voice.
"Its alright, I'm coming down, ok?" Y/n called down and began descending the ladder she had placed there moments ago.
Minho grabbed her arm, giving her a look. Y/n nodded. She would be alright.
The boy didn't say a word as she climbed, but when y/n landed on the metal floor of the lift she found him cowering in the farthest corner.
"You don't remember anything do you" y/n guessed.
The boys face was stricken, but he nodded slowly. Y/n smiled at him, noticing he had very bright green eyes, then looked upwards at the two boys staring at her expectantly.
"Looks like we've got a new guy" y/n told them, then turned back to the terrified boy.
"Look we came here with no memories either. You'll remember your name soon enough-"
"Jack. It's Jack" the boy said.
"Alright then... Jack, let's Introduce you to the Glade" y/n was surprised Jack had remembered his own name so quickly. She felt proud using the name for the Glade.
Minho had started to climb the ladder downwards but he jumped to the metal net to let Jack pass thruogh. Y/n really had to nudge the newbie forward to get him to climb. Alby greeted him at the top.
"You guys good?" He asked minho and y/n.
"Just give him a tour" Minho waved the two off.
Jack looked at y/n longingly and she grinned, trying to make him feel better as Alby whisked him away. Y/n turned to look at Minho who was waiting for her to give him the first of the supplies.
The sun was cascading over Minhos face and y/n was stricken by how handsome he looked. She hated to admit but.. to face the truth y/n had a pretty big crush on the boy already.
Minho noticed y/n staring and chuckled, trying to mask his blush with his usual sassy comment.
"S'there something on my face?" He asked y/n.
Y/n scoffed, then leaned over to mask her embarrassed face. She tried to act as if she didn't care, picking up a wooden crate filled with new clothes and handing it up to Minho. She hoped that he would easily forget the moment of y/n staring but she could see from Minhos face that he was still processing it.
Besides, someone as strong, handsome, and brave as Minho could never even look twice at some insignificant girl like y/n. Y/n truly appreciated the close friendship they had formed and didn't want to ruin it with her stupid feelings.
Yet when Minho lifted her onto the ground level, the touch of his hands along her arms made her stomach flutter. Y/n quickly turned to the supplies. The pair, to y/n's relief, then continued on as if barely anything had happened, resuming their usual playful bickering.
The work continued. Jack sure was a gentleman, and y/n found that he naturally knew quite a bit about health-stuff. Alby gave him the task of making a small first-aid kit for the Glade.
Y/n helped Minho build a proper toilet and shower area, using sewerage and water systems that had been in the ground since the beginning. Then another kid came. And another. They started calling the boys "greenies", taken from Jack's eye-color. The system of the Glade began to grow and expand. A proper kitchen was established and the third greenie's name, Frypan, immediately earned him a spot as head cook.
Y/n was put in charge of the gardening, taking the fourth greenie, Newt under her wing. Minho was a builder and he a more heavy-built boys, Gally.
Throughout all this y/n was beginning to grow very uncomfortable. Sure she had great friends... but she was the only girl. The fact that she was alone built a figurative wall around her. Y/n felt like she coudnt be as free as she would like.
But that wasn't the only thing. Y/n thoughts were starting to shift from survival to escaping the Glade.
"What do you think is out there?" Y/n asked Minho.
They were sitting next to each other eating lunch, sausages and frypans new salad.
Minho looked over at y/n, munching on some salad leaves. He thought for a moment. Y/n felt stupid now that she had asked the question.
"We should explore that place shouldn't we" Minho said, sounding very sure of it.
"But haven't you heard those... like roars in the night?"
"There must be something out there-"
"We'll go during the day, see what that place is, the doors close at 8, right?"
Minho glanced at his watch, took a second to ponder then nodded. He looked excited to go and finally explore. Alby had been so busy that he had never voiced his thoughts on attempting some sort of escape. Minho and y/n had to take this into their own hands.
"I'll come with you" Jack piped up from behind the, a plate and cup in his hands.
"It might be dangerous alright?" Minho warned.
Though it would have been a bit nerve-wracking, y/n would've enjoyed some one on one alone time with Minho. Maybe she could've confessed her feelings- No. That would ruin everything. And it was too scary.
"Y/n you'll come right?" Jack asked, sitting down across from her on the bench they had recently gotten from the box.
Y/n looked over to Minho, and seeing his confident face gave her the courage to tag along.
"Yeah sure, us three'll go tomorrow in the morning" y/n decided, the boys agreeing.
"But shouldn't we tell Alby?" Jack asked with uncertainty.
"I..." y/n looked over to Minho for help.
"We'll let Newt know, just in case. And he's a nice guy, so he won't snitch if not necessary" Minho suggested.
So it was done. They were going to explore the whatever maze was that surrounded them. It felt like a big leap forward to y/n, and she would've never gone in the maze alone.
Minho went off to tell Newt their plan, and y/n decided to pack some food, water, and a first aid kit into a bag for the next day. Though they had no idea how large the maze was y/n figured they would try and use the technique of turning left at every turn. It would take a long time, and they had already put so much work into creating the systems of the Glade that made it livable.
But there was a chance. No matter how small, there was a chance they could escape.
A/n: this chapter was pretty crappy but don't worry I've got something good for you guys the next few chapters.
