"god, i'm so excited and nervous at the same time," rowan muttered as she stepped out of the car and glanced at the familiar front door of billie's parents' house. her palms felt a little clammy despite the cool breeze.

billie reached for rowan's hand, intertwining their fingers as they walked toward the house. "you don't need to be nervous," she reassured softly. "it's not like you're meeting them for the first time."

rowan let out a shaky laugh, her thumb brushing over billie's. "i know, but it's been six years. last time i saw them, we weren't dating." she bit her lower lip, her nerves betraying her.

billie stopped in her tracks, tugging gently on rowan's hand to make her turn around. rowan raised a curious brow as billie stepped closer, their bodies just inches apart.

"you've got to stop doing that," billie said, lifting her free hand to softly tug rowan's lip free from her teeth. "you're gonna mess them up, and i happen to like them just the way they are—soft and perfect." billie stood on her tiptoes, pressing a quick, warm kiss to rowan's lips, her eyes sparkling with affection.

rowan exhaled, her nerves easing slightly as she smiled down at billie. she leaned in to kiss her again, savoring the comfort billie always seemed to give her.

"okay, let's do this," rowan said, her voice steadier now as they approached the front door.

rowan knocked lightly, and within moments, the door swung open to reveal finneas. his face lit up when he saw rowan.

"hey, guys!" he greeted, pulling rowan into a hug and completely ignoring billie. "it's so nice to see you again, rowan."

"you too, fin," rowan said, laughing as she hugged him back.

"uh, ahem," billie cleared her throat dramatically, folding her arms as she gave her brother an exaggerated glare.

finneas rolled his eyes but couldn't help grinning as he opened his arms to pull billie into a hug too. "fine, i guess it's nice to see you too, sis."

"nice save," billie quipped with a smirk, nudging him playfully.

"come on in," finneas said, stepping aside. "mom and dad are in the kitchen."

as the three of them made their way inside, billie called out, "hey, mom! hey, dad!" she darted ahead to hug them both.

maggie turned, her face lighting up when she saw rowan. "oh, rowan! it's so nice to see you again! look how much you've grown." she pulled rowan into a warm hug, her tone as sweet as ever.

"thank you," rowan said, a little shy but smiling. "it's nice to see you again, mrs. o'connell. you too, sir."

patrick chuckled, placing a hand on rowan's shoulder with a gentle squeeze. "rowan, you practically lived here for five years. call me patrick, please."

"and you can call me maggie," billie's mom added warmly.

rowan's smile widened as she glanced over at billie, who was beaming proudly beside her.

but billie's attention didn't stay on the moment for long. suddenly, her eyes lit up with inspiration. "fin!" she exclaimed. "i just got an idea for a song."

finneas raised an eyebrow, amused. "here we go," he teased, earning a laugh from rowan, maggie, and patrick.

"c'mon," billie said, already pushing finneas out of the kitchen. but after a few steps, she turned around and grabbed rowan's hand. "you're coming with us, baby."

"won't take long, promise!" she called back to her parents as she tugged rowan toward her old room.

once inside, finneas settled at the keyboard, cracking his knuckles dramatically. "alright, what's the big idea?"

billie launched into an excited explanation while rowan leaned against the bed, watching them with a fond smile. for the next twenty minutes, the siblings worked together, bouncing melodies and lyrics back and forth. rowan chimed in occasionally, her eyes sparkling at the creative energy between them.

when they finally paused, billie turned to rowan with a grin. "told you it wouldn't take long," she said, crossing the room to wrap her arms around her girlfriend.

rowan smiled and kissed her forehead. "i don't mind. watching you like this? it's my favorite thing."

billie's cheeks flushed, but she hid her face against rowan's shoulder, muttering, "shut up."

finneas rolled his eyes but smirked. "you two are nauseating," he teased, making both women laugh.

"how did you even do that?" billie asked her brother, barely able to get the words out through her laughter.

"you saw it," finneas replied nonchalantly, peeling off his damp shirt after a particularly chaotic attempt at showing off some random trick.

"ew, fin, not in front of my girl," billie complained, reaching over to cover rowan's eyes dramatically.

finneas rolled his eyes as he headed toward his room. "it's literally no different than wearing a swimsuit," he shot back.

"still gross!" billie yelled after him, earning a quiet chuckle from rowan.

"where's claudia, by the way?" billie called.

"she's busy today. she's not coming," finneas replied from down the hall, his voice fading as he disappeared into his room.

billie shrugged it off and turned back to rowan, taking her hand as they wandered into the living room to sit and chat with her parents. maggie was setting out a plate of cookies while patrick leaned back in his chair, clearly happy to have everyone home.

"rowan, we always see you on tv," maggie said with a proud smile. "you're so talented, and we're so proud of you."

rowan's cheeks turned slightly pink as she smiled warmly at her. "thank you, mrs.—maggie," she corrected herself.

billie, who had settled herself comfortably in rowan's lap, tilted her head up with an exaggerated grin. "that's my baby," she said, kissing rowan's chin before snuggling closer. rowan smiled down at her and pressed a kiss to the top of billie's head.

"look at you two," maggie said, shaking her head with an affectionate smile. patrick chuckled beside her, leaning forward.

"you know, maggie and i talked about you two years ago," patrick said, his voice soft with nostalgia. "we'd see how you acted around each other—always so close, always looking out for one another—and we couldn't figure out if you were dating or just didn't realize you liked each other yet. but we were waiting for this moment." he gestured at the two of them. "and i have to say, i'm happy for you. really happy."

billie's eyes softened, her bottom lip jutting out in a playful pout. "i love you, dad," she said as she climbed off rowan's lap and crossed the room to hug him tightly.

"i love you too, sweetheart," patrick said, his voice warm and sincere.

"i love you, mom," billie said, turning to maggie for another hug.

maggie wrapped her arms around her daughter, kissing her cheek. "we love you both," she said, glancing back at rowan with a smile.

rowan, sitting quietly, felt a rush of gratitude. billie returned to her side, squeezing her hand as they shared a warm glance. in that moment, rowan felt like she wasn't just billie's partner—but part of her family.

billie's family gatherings were always bustling with energy—laughter spilling from every corner, a dozen conversations happening at once, and kids darting around like they were fueled by endless sugar. it was no surprise that billie wanted rowan there too. rowan wasn't technically family, but she'd become a staple at these events, as much a part of the o'connell gatherings as the snacks and board games.

"hey, billie! hey, rowan!" grace, billie's little cousin, called out cheerfully as she skipped over to the two of them.

"hey, g," billie said warmly, while rowan offered the little girl a smile.

grace lingered just long enough to grin at them before running off to another group of cousins, leaving billie and rowan to themselves again. they sat close on the floor, sharing a plate of snacks. billie had settled comfortably between rowan's legs, her legs draped across rowan's lap. rowan, seemingly on autopilot, played with the frayed hem of billie's oversized sweater, her fingers gently tugging at the loose threads.

rowan popped a grape into her mouth, glancing down at billie. "why do you always want me here? it's kind of... weird."

billie tilted her head, a curious look in her eyes. "why's it weird?"

rowan gestured around the room. "i mean, there's so many people here that have nothing to do with me. i'm not part of your family."

billie leaned a little closer, her voice soft but firm. "you have everything to do with me. and i don't want to be at one of these things without you." she smiled, wrapping her arms lazily around rowan's neck, settling even more comfortably against her.

rowan chuckled softly and kissed the top of billie's head before shifting the plate of snacks closer. the two quickly dissolved into their own little world, as they often did, tossing grapes into each other's mouths and laughing like kids.

"come on, aim better!" billie teased, ducking as a grape bounced off her forehead.

rowan raised an eyebrow, smirking. "maybe if you stopped bobbing your head around like a chicken, i'd have better luck!" she tossed another grape, which billie caught triumphantly, holding it up like a trophy before popping it into her mouth.

across the room, maggie nudged patrick with her elbow, nodding subtly toward the pair. "have you noticed how close those two are?" she whispered, a curious glint in her eye.

patrick followed her gaze, watching as rowan gently brushed a strand of hair out of billie's face. billie smirked up at her before stealing another snack off the plate, making rowan groan in mock frustration. billie responded by poking rowan's side playfully until rowan grabbed her hand and held it. the two were laughing, heads close together, completely oblivious to the world around them.

patrick raised an eyebrow. "you think there's something going on?" he murmured back.

maggie shrugged, but a knowing smile played on her lips. "i don't know... but look at them. that's not just best-friend behavior. they're acting like an old married couple."

patrick tilted his head, watching the easy way rowan and billie interacted, the way they seemed to orbit each other so naturally. rowan leaned back against the couch with billie still nestled between her legs, billie resting her head on rowan's shoulder as they whispered something and laughed quietly.

"they're adorable, whatever they are," patrick said with a quiet chuckle.

maggie leaned closer to him, her voice dropping lower. "should we ask them?"

patrick shook his head with a gentle smile, his gaze soft. "no, they'll tell us when they're ready."

maggie glanced back at the pair, watching as billie tilted her head up to murmur something in rowan's ear, making rowan laugh softly before kissing the side of billie's head. she smiled to herself. whatever the label, it was clear to everyone in the room: billie and rowan were in their own little world, and it was a beautiful thing to see.
