****I HAVE CHANGED THE ENDING TO CHAPTER 56, MADE A PRETTY LARGE MISTAKE AND HAVE SINCED REMOVED IT. IT WAS THE LAST FEW LINES AND THIS CHAPTER WILL CLEAR IT UP. I'M MORTIFIED THAT I MADE THE ERROR AND DIDN'T CATCH IT*****
Adam walked solemnly back into the room, Kim laying on her side her back to him but he knew she was crying.
Daniel approached him, "You alright son?" He hugged him, his hand moving to his cheek.
"No, but I will be" his heartbreaking for Kim knowing he couldn't do anything to help ease her pain.
"Call us if you need anything, we are going to go get the kids from Annie, give them a break" he smiled.
"Kiss them for me" Adam said, "don't mention the baby yet"
Dr.Weatherspoon went to the NICU, "How's the Ruzek baby?" He went through the procedure of becoming sterile before touching the babies.
"He's hanging in, he's doing well"
"Have they visited him yet?"
"No, but both sets of grandparents have been in, plus we have been talking to him a lot" it was sad, "I feel horrible for them"
Adam sat quietly in the chair, Kim having drifted off to sleep, Dr.Weatherspoon knocked on the door, "Can I come in?" He was carrying a large box with him.
"Yes, sure" Adam stood to greet him, "what's that?" He pointed to the box.
Kim slowly opening her eyes, being hit with the realization that the previous day's events had not been an awful nightmare more tears springing to her eyes "Hi Doctor" she said softly as she gingerly sat up in the bed.
"These are just a few things for you guys to remember Wyatt" he opened the box, "we made molds of his hands for you both and both sets of grandparents" he handed Adam the three smaller boxes, "here's his blanket, a volunteer has already monogrammed his name on it for you" the blanket he handed to Kim and she brought it to her face trying to find the scent of her son on it. He pulled four certificates from a envelope, "They aren't ready yet, but we work with a company that makes teddy bears for families that suffer a loss like yours, they make the bear your child's measurements and weight so you'll never forget what he felt like in your arms" he nearly lost it, "They're making one for you and each of your children"
Adam was overwhelmed by the generosity they had encountered during this difficult time, "Thank you so much. These gifts mean the world to us, thank you for all you did for Kim"
"I wish it could have been more" he said softly. "Your little guy is doing well, I just left him in the NICU"
"We haven't seen him yet" Adam embarrassed be the fact, "but we will in a little while" he knew it would be incredibly painful and he wasn't sure he or Kim could handle any more pain.
"The nursing staff is asking about a name, does he have one?"
Kim wiped her eyes, "He does" she had stumbled across the baby naming book she had bought for Adam when Anthony was born, it was shortly after she received the diagnosis. She spent hours scouring the book trying to find perfect names for her boys. She wanted them both to have strong names, ones that would hint at the battle they fought while in the womb. She had gone through various different meanings, but 'Warrior' had stuck with her, never mentioning it to Adam for fear of jinxing her boys health.
Adam smiled, "What is it?" he would never be able to match her strength, the way she fought for the boys everything she had and everything she did was with their well being in mind.
"Just tell me if you don't like it, I will understand"
"I'm sure I will love it"
"Wyatt means warrior," she reminded him, "I think both our boys are warriors, so I wanted their names to reflect that" Adam sat beside her, "Kane, is his name it also means 'warrior'. I gave Wyatt your name as his middle name, because you're my warrior, you always have been" she smiled wistfully at him, "You've always fought for me and our family, Kane's is Phillip, because my brother fought so hard to repair our relationship"
Adam leaned over and kissed her lips softly, "those names are perfect, you up to visiting Kane?"
She nodded, "Yes, can we hold him?"
Dr.Weatherspoon smiled, "Yes, he's doing well. He's adorable"
Kim watched Kane sleep from the window that looked in on the NICU, Adam standing behind her his hands on her waist, "He's tiny, though he's bigger than Wyatt, huh?"her voice was soft.
Wyatt had barely weighed two and half pounds and was only fifteen inches long, Kane was nearly four pounds and seventeen inches long fairly large considering his gestational age.
"Yea, doc said he's almost four pounds" his hand moving to her shoulder, "let's go inside"
Kim sat in the rocking chair, the nurse placing Kane against her bare chest explaining that the babies thrived when having skin to skin contact with their parents, "He's a sweet baby, Kim"
"Thank you for taking care of him while we said our goodbyes to Wyatt" Kim smiled, while her heart remained heavy for her son, she was finally feeling some joy, "Adam he's perfect, isn't he?"
"He is, just like his mom"Adam crouched down beside her, watching his son study Kim's face, "he's observant"
She smiled, "he's going to know about Wyatt, that he has his own guardian angel"
"He will and so will Anthony and Harper, everyone will know about him" Adam kissed Kane's head.
"Do you want to hold him?"
"Please" Adam said unbuttoning the top buttons on his shirt and carefully holding Kane to his chest, a soft sob escaping his lips, "I love you Kane"
THREE WEEKS LATER
Adam waited outside the office, his heart ached he never thought he would receive a phone call telling him his son's ashes were ready to be picked up. It was all so wrong, he smiled softly when the employee handed him the incredibly light box containing his infant son's remains.
"We're sorry for your loss, Mr.Ruzek"
"Thanks" he was tired of hearing those words from everyone who he encountered, it wasn't a 'loss' he felt as if his son was the victim of an ugly violent crime, that his life was stolen from him. You lose your car keys, a cell phone, a phone number you don't lose your children. No, he was stolen from them, from his wife and from his older children. A crime without justice, they could only hope to find the good in each day, to rise above their grief.
It was painful telling Anthony and Harper about Wyatt's death, Harper had no reaction other than asking to go play with the new kitchen set Derek and Annie had bought her. Anthony was confused, his little face scrunching up as he tried to make sense of it all, he struggled with how the baby could die when he was still in her stomach. He shocked them both when he burst into tears, he told them he wanted to see his brother that he didn't believe them.
Kim struggled to hold it together, finally comforting Anthony and promising to take him to visit Kane as soon as the doctors would allow it. Kane was still in the NICU a nasty infection had hit him and for a few days it had been touch and go. Thankfully, antibiotics finally kicked the infection from his little body.
Adam carefully carried the box, he was afraid to let it out of his sight. He sat it on the passenger seat, pulling the seatbelt across it in an attempt to keep it safe. He went to start the truck only to have a wave of tears hit him, his head on the steering wheel as he cried for all his son was robbed of.
ONE YEAR LATER
"Woah, Anth! Slow down" Adam yelled as he chased after the six year old, "let me catch up"
"You're so slow Dad" Anthony laughed as he waited for Adam in front of the bakery, "Can I get a cookie?"
Adam smiled, "Sure" he pulled the door open, and went to the counter.
"Can I help you?"
Adam glanced over at Anthony who was practically drooling on the glass case holding the cookies, "I'm picking up the Ruzek order, and I think my son would like one of those massive chocolate chip cookies, you know the one bigger than his head" he said with a laugh.
He paid for the cake and cookie, "Let's go pal"
Anthony grabbed Adam's free hand as they walked through the parking lot, he looked up at him, "Dad?"
"Yea?"
Anthony climbed in the back seat, "Even though Wyatt isn't alive is it still his birthday like it is Kane's?" His big brown eyes looking to Adam for clarification, "does he still get a birthday?"
Adam felt the familiar lump in his throat, "Yea, he does. It's just not the same kind, we don't give him presents or cake, but we think about him and how much we love and miss him" he held his son's face in his hands, "We don't have him with us like Kane is but he's in here" he pointed to Anthony's heart, "that's where Wyatt lives, he's always in our hearts and thoughts"
"Do you think he would like me?"
Adam felt the wind leave his lungs, "You tell me, do you think Kane likes you?"
Anthony smiled, "Yes, he always laughs at me when I do silly things"
"Does Kane like Harper?"
Anthony rolled his eyes, "Dad, yes he does"
"Wyatt would have too buddy, he would have loved you so much just like Kane and Harper do"
Kim sat in the living room, clutching the locket in her hand. Adam had surprised her with it a few weeks after Kane was finally discharged from the hospital in it some of Wyatt's ashes.
"MaMa?" Kane said as he pulled on the locket, she couldn't help but smile. He had the biggest chocolate brown eyes, she found herself getting lost in them on a daily basis. His hair just as brown, and disheveled constantly just like Adam's and Anthony's.
"Mommy loves you Kane" she kissed his cheek and carefully removed the locket from his grip, "you remember your brother don't you baby" she was sure it sounded silly to any one other than Adam and their family but she knew Kane missed him, that he knew a part of Wyatt and in some way a part of himself was inside the locket she wore. His hands constantly seeking it out, clutching it as he drifted off to sleep in her lap, or when she held him it was as if it brought him comfort.
"Daddy's home and he has cake!" Harper yelled, the little girl loved to eat "can we eat it now?"
Kim smiled at her daughter, "Not yet baby, we need to wait for everyone to get here" she had gone back and forth over the idea of a birthday party, she didn't really want to celebrate a day that broke her heart and repaired it at the same time. Adam helped her realize that they needed to celebrate all Kane had overcome and honor Wyatt's memory.
Harper ran off in search of Adam, Kim stopped in front of the picture of Wyatt on the nightstand, "I love and miss you every day sweet baby, I hope I'm making you proud"
"Dada!" Kane yelled clapping his hands as Adam came into view, "Dada!"
"Hey Kane, gimme some sugar" he teased as he blew raspberries under his chin, "you ready for some cake?" earning a grin, one little tooth finally breaking through his gums.
The party was much needed, Kane was showered with plenty of gifts, and one that hit home with Kim and Adam both.
They had been working tirelessly to start a foundation in honor of Wyatt and hoped to bring awareness to the condition that stole their son from them, the Intelligence Unit had pulled together enough funds to secure the land and commission an architect to design a playground in Wyatt's memory and give them a place to smile when they thought of their son.
Adam smiled as he looked at the blueprints, "this is amazing" he told Kim, the best part being the sign they would be having made.
"It is" she told him as she wrapped her arms around his waist and leaned against his back, "I love the name they are going to give the playground 'Wyatt's Warriors' it's perfect" a tear rolling down her cheek.
"I think we just found our foundation's name, what do you think?" He turned to face her "sounds perfect, 'Wyatt's Warriors' it has a nice ring to it" he kissed her.
"It's the perfect choice" she smiled as she rested her head on his chest.
