"Hold on baby, the ambulance is coming" Adam told Kim, Anthony coming down the hallway, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

"Daddy, I'm thirsty"Anthony whispered, unaware of the distress Kim was in.

"Go back in your room" Adam glanced over his shoulder, "please son, go on" he didn't want Anthony seeing Kim like this.

He could hear the sirens in the distance, "Adam call Annie" Kim managed to get out, knowing they would need someone to sit with the kids.

Bob had to do a double take when he heard the ambulance call out come over his radio, "We need to go, that's my son's house" he told his partner as he turned the squad car around.

"Daddy, why is mommy crying?" Anthony asked as he peeked over Adam's shoulder, "is she sick?"

Kim tried to slow her breathing, the pain like nothing she had ever felt before, "it's okay" she mumbled, "I'm okay" she wore a fake smile.

"Adam? What's wrong?" Bob yelled as he ran through the house, the paramedics on his heels.

"Dad, it's Kim. Something's wrong" Adam said as he stood up allowing the medics the ability to work on Kim.

"She's twenty six weeks pregnant, diagnosed with twin-to-twin transfusion" he grabbed the information card off the refrigerator "here, this explains it all" they had been given the card, but Adam had hoped he would never need to use it.

Anthony had worked his way into Adam's arms, "Mommy?" Adam rubbed his back, his own heart in his throat.

He watched as Kim succumbed to the pain, "Scoop and go!" The lead medic said, "you coming dad?"

Adam looked over at Bob, "Go Adam, I got the kids" he took Anthony from him, "I will get to the hospital as soon as I can" he thanked the universe that he was even working, a buddy of his had needed a favor and Bob agreed to switch tours on a whim.

The ride in the ambulance was a blur, Kim was in and out of it, it was obvious she was in severe pain. "Come on baby, hold on" he gripped her free hand. The paramedic not even speaking to him, just trying to keep Kim as comfortable as possible though it was an impossible task.

"Called ahead, Dr.Weatherspoon is on his way" the driver called into the back, Adam breathing a sigh of relief knowing his wife and babies would be in good hands.

Adam chased after the paramedic as they rushed Kim inside the hospital, a nurse stopping Adam at the door.

"Adam, you have to wait here" she told him.

"I need to go with her, she needs me" Adam begged his pleas falling on deaf ears.

"Have a seat" she pointed to the rows of chairs the emergency room waiting area surprisingly empty.

"Okay" he said dejectedly, "will you get me when I can see her?"

"Of course" she smiled warmly at him, "Kim is in good hands" she offered, the entire hospital had been made familiar with them, all of them fascinated by the condition the babies had.

"Why did mommy have to go in the ambulance?" Anthony asked, "are my brothers coming?"

Bob sighed, "I don't know, grandma is on her way. It's gonna be okay" he told Anthony, he was thankful Harper had slept through all the excitement.

He heard Amy come in and met her in the foyer, "Honey, it's bad" Bob told her, "I need to go, will you be okay?"

Amy nodded, "Yeah, Annie and Derek will be here soon and I will come to the hospital as soon as they get here" she wiped her eyes, "take care of our boy until I can get my arms around him"

He smiled, "I will"

Adam was surprised to see Kevin come through the doors, "Adam, what's up?" He asked hugging him, "Kim okay?"

Adam sat back down, his elbows on his knees "I don't know, she was out of it. The look in her eyes man, it was terrifying"

Kevin sat beside him, wrapping an arm around him, "She's tough man"

Adam wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, "how'd you know?"

"Your pops, he called me"

"Adam, come on back" the nurse called him, "Dr.Weatherspoon is here"

"Good luck, do you want me to call anyone for you?" Kevin asked.

Adam shook his head, "No, my dad should be here soon will you look out for him?"

"Of course, kiss Kim for me" Kevin wished he could do something for his friends.

"Hey baby" Adam whispered when he went in the exam room, "you in pain still?"

Kim's cheeks flushed, her eyes puffy and red from crying, "yea" she said biting her bottom lip trying to keep from crying, "I'm sorry"

Adam pulled the chair closer to her bed, "for what?"

"I couldn't protect them" she sobbed, it was like a knife to Adam's heart.

Dr.Weatherspoon entered the room, the concern on his face was obvious "Hey guys, let's see what is going on" he said softly as he started up the ultrasound machine, he squirted the warm jelly on Kim stomach and begin the scan.

"I'm sacred" Kim muttered.

"I know, I am too" Adam confessed, he hunched over her his lips pressed to her forehead.

They waited as the scan was performed, the nurse staring at the floor, Dr.Weatherspoon removed his glasses, he motioned to the nurse who grabbed a box of tissues and handed them to him before she left the room pulling the door closed behind her.

Adam stood upright, "What is it?"

It was as if Kim already knew, "No, please no!" She wailed, "not my babies, no!"

"Doc? What is it?" Adam was terrified, Kim's hand in his.

"I'm sorry, baby B is no longer viable. I can't find his heartbeat, he's gone" he placed his hand on Kim's arm, "I'm so sorry. I will give you two some privacy" he needed to gather the team, the next two weeks would be crucial for not only the surviving twin but also Kim. The possibility of losing the surviving twin and complications for Kim would be a concern for the team, one he hoped wouldn't happen.

Adam sat slack jawed, his heart felt heavy and he was crushed. "Kim?" He finally whispered tucking her hair behind her ear, "hey, look at me" he didn't know what to say.

"Alone" she told him, "I need to be alone" it surprised him at how calm she seemed, "please just go"

Adam shook his head, "No, I won't leave you"

"I don't want you in here" she spat.

He could see her blood pressure and heart rate rise on the monitor, "Fine, but I won't be long, I love you"

She nodded, a tissue clutched in her hand.

"Hey, here comes Adam" Kevin pointed to the doors nudging Bob.

"Dad?" Adam said softly, "we lost one" he fell to his knees, Bob bending down to embrace him.

Kevin went outside and began making phone calls on Adam's behalf, they unit was more than just a unit they were a family.

"Come sit down" Bob told Adam, "I'm so sorry son"

Adam wiped his eyes with his sleeve, "she told me to leave"

"She's devastated Adam, you need to go back in there" Bob touched his shoulder, "she needs you"

Amy came rushing in Annie at her side, "Adam?" She raced to him, hugging him, "Kim okay?"

Adam shook his head no, and rubbed Amy's cheek, "Dad will fill you in" he choked out.

Annie and Amy say down, "Bob?"

He sat down taking her hand, "They lost one of the boys" his own tears falling.

Adam slowly opened the door, "I know you said you wanted to be alone but I can't stay away" he explained, needing to be with her.

"I shouldn't have told you to leave" she cried, "what did I do wrong?"

"Nothing, you did nothing" he whispered.

Dr.Weatherspoon returned, "We need to keep you here for the next few days, we want to closely monitor Baby A" he said.

"What will you do about B?" Adam asked, "It's too early"

Dr.Weatherspoon leaned against the counter, "Its in baby A's best interest that we leave things as they are, let's try and get him to 28 weeks at the very earliest"

"So you're just gonna leave him?" Adam was shocked, he hated that Kim had to deal with any of this.

"Yes, I know it isn't ideal. None of this is but we're fighting to save baby A"

"Of course" Kim nodded.

"Try and get some rest, and again I'm sorry for your loss" he rubbed her leg and shook Adam's hand.

They moved Kim to a room, and finally allowed family up. Adam had fallen asleep in the chair.

Kim watched him as he slept, "Honey? Can we come in?" Amy asked from the doorway.

She nodded, "yes, I'm sorry" she said through tears.

"Kim, it isn't your fault" Annie hugged her, "you'll get through this, we will all help"

"Thank you"

Amy hugged her, "tell me what you need me to do?" She asked as the sun started to rise, filling the room with a soft glow.

"Can you call my brother? He will make all the other calls" she didn't even bother wiping her eyes anymore, "how are Anthony and Harper?"

"Derek is with them, they're okay" Annie told her, "don't worry about them, they can stay with us for as long as you need"
