Adam watched as Anthony slept for the last few minutes remaining before he needed to get up and get ready his uniform hanging on the door knob. He found it hard to wrap his head around the fact his little boy was starting school, he felt a bit sad considering how Anthony had come in to the world.
The little boy still sucked his thumb when he slept, a habit he hoped would have left by now, Kim still found it to be adorable he just hoped his son wouldn't enter high school still sucking his thumb.
"You okay?" Kim whispered from the doorway, she could see it written all over his face and she too had felt it, it was as if the last five years had flown by, "I'm pretty sure I'm going to cry like a baby" she laughed, sitting in his lap.
Adam looked up at her, "I've been thinking about the first few months of his life" the guilt he felt for how he handled everything still haunted him, he was certain it always would. He kissed her shoulder, "Sometimes I think about what would have happened to him if it wasn't for you, where he would be" his voice soft filled with regret.
"Please don't to this to yourself" she told him, her eyes locked on his, "you would have come around, it was a tragedy how it played out but I know you Adam you wouldn't have abandoned him"
He smirked, "I don't know about that, for a hot minute I considered it" he had never told her before, he felt like shit "I thought about signing out AMA, and just running and never looking back" he ran his finger over her wedding band, "I'm glad I didn't"
She put her arm around his neck "what stopped you?"
"I don't really know exactly" he admitted, watching as Anthony's eyes opened, "hey Anth, good morning"
Anthony rubbed his eyes and sat up in his bed, his hair disheveled "is it my school day?"
"It is buddy, are you excited?" Kim asked climbing in the bed with him.
"Are you gonna come too?" He asked as he worked his way into her lap, his thumb finding its way to his mouth, his eyes still sleepy.
"Remember we talked about this, you'll go to school by yourself." Adam told him, "Mommy will drop you off and pick you up though"
"Adam, you're not coming today?" She asked, she had hoped he would, she wasn't sure she could leave her little boy behind. Anthony had always been with her, the only time he was away from her he was with family.
"I hadn't planned on it" he told her, "but I can if you want"
She nodded, "let's get ready for school buddy" Kim handed Anthony his clothes, "get dressed" she left him with Adam.
This was her first year at this school, she'd been teaching for six years now, mostly in inner-city schools this was a totally different beast. Her co-workers had already warned her that these children would be entitled and most of them would probably never have to work a day in their life.
She turned on the slideshow that the school made for the first day and went about assigning desks to the children, she ran down her class roster. The boy to girl ratio was insane, out of the seventeen children in her class thirteen of them boys.
"Just wonderful" she laughed, she knew she was in for a wild year. As she read the names, one in particular stuck out in her mind, "Anthony Ruzek" she felt her gut flip, "Wendy's little boy?"
They had been best friends since fifth grade, the last time she had spoken to her was a few weeks before the accident that had killed her. Wendy spoke of how she planned on leaving Adam, that she was certain he had something going on with a cop.
Katrina had called her out on all the times Wendy had hooked up with Kevin behind Adam's back, even having Kevin over while Adam was working. It was the last conversation they had, she even went as far as to tell Wendy to have a DNA test done.
She never returned for the funeral, just sent Adam a card that had been returned by the post office listed as 'undeliverable no forwarding address' she sat in the chair and tried to calm down. "I'm sure there is more than one Ruzek in Chicago" she told herself, she pulled the little boy's file out and read it "Adam and Kim Ruzek" she said, "he's Wendy's little boy" all doubt had been erased from her mind.
Glancing at her watch she realized she had just a few minutes left before her students would arrive, she tried to push Wendy out of her mind, hoping against hope that it wasn't true that she wasn't going to be teaching the child of her deceased best friend.
Charlie raced across the campus out of breath when she finally reached the elementary building and the kindergarten hallway, she waited for Anthony to show up.
Adam parked the SUV and unbuckled Harper, waiting as Kim helped Anthony out of the truck, this little boy dressed in black dress pants, a light blue collared shirt. This was considered 'dress down day' he had to laugh, never in his wildest dreams did he ever think he would send his kids to The Lawton Academy, "here's your bag bud" he handed him the backpack the only thing that wasn't restricted.
"Thanks daddy" Anthony said as he slipped it on his shoulder, "this place is big" his eyes huge, "Charlie here?"
Kim shook her head, "Remember she goes to the bigger school" she pointed across the field, "you probably won't see her baby" he took her hand, she could see the apprehension on his face, "you're going to do great buddy, and you'll make a lot of new friends"
They made their way down the kindergarten hallway, "I see her!" Anthony yelled taking off in a sprint, "Charlie!"
"Anthony! I couldn't miss your first day" she smiled bending down to hug him, "I've already found your classroom" she told him, "Aunt Kim, his teacher is young" she smiled, knowing the younger teachers seemed to be nicer.
Kim followed Anthony in the classroom, she was already impressed with it. The classroom was decorated beautifully, "Look Anthony it's like Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" she pointed out the coconut tree that held all the students names.
Katrina caught sight of Adam out of the corner of her eye, standing behind whom she assumed was Kim and the little boy in front of her had to be Anthony.
"Hi, I'm Ms.Cameron, you are?" She kneeled down in front of Anthony, he was beautiful the spitting image of his father though she could see traces of Wendy in him, especially when he smiled.
"I'm Anthony Owen Ruzek and I'm five" he held up five fingers.
Adam turned and spotted her, "Katrina?" He asked. He was surprised to see her, the last he had heard was she was living in Denver, "I had no idea you came back home" he felt Kim's eyes on him, he switched Harper to his left hip, "Wow, you're Anthony's teacher"
"Guess so" she said as she placed her hand on Anthony's shoulder, "over here is your desk Anthony" she led him to it, "here's your notebook"
"Thank you, bye Mommy" he glanced up at Kim and waved.
Kim felt her heart in her throat, "bye Anthony" she grabbed Harper from Adam, and made her way to the door, glancing back to see Adam still speaking with Ms.Cameron.
"He's beautiful Adam" Katrina remarked, "I can't believe she's been gone five years already"
Adam shrugged, "I gotta go" he went to Anthony, "Have a great day buddy, follow the directions and be a good boy" he tousled his hair and joined Kim in the hallway.
"You alright?" Adam asked Kim who was still staring in the classroom, Charlie already having left for her class, "he's gonna be fine"
Kim nodded, "I know, I won't lie I thought he would have been a little sad" she smiled, "I'm happy he isn't but I'm a little sad, my baby is growing up" she wiped at the lone tear that had fallen.
Adam embraced her, "Maybe we will have another little baby soon" his hand on her stomach, "we've certainly been working on it" he was a little disappointed that she had yet to be pregnant, it seemed to happen so easily with Harper.
As they left the building and returned to the SUV, Kim finally asked him, "Who is Katrina Cameron and how do you know her?"
