A/N: this one is really long. but I loved trying to work this one out. hope you like it!!

for this to work I had to kind of change some of the events in the movie, (which meant i changed quite a bit) but I tried to keep it as close to the movie as possible. This takes place during their Senior Year. Also is a female reader POV.

Y/F/N= your funny nickname

You and Troy have been childhood best friends. Growing up you were inseparable. You guys trusted each other. Everyone teased you about dating. I mean you guys surly acted like it. You stole his sweatshirts and tees. When you hung out he would steal your blankets. He had an entire stack at his house of blankets he took. You knew he loved to act. When you were little and in the safety of one of your homes he would put on little skits for you. He was scared to tell anyone else. but you could see his talent. When your other friends were there he would play Basketball and you would play cheerleader, Cheering him on. This carried on until you became a cheerleader for HS while he was the star player. You sat at lunch together, stole each others food. walk the halls together, you would walk or ride home together. You guys had the same friends but also hung out separately so you would enjoy your time together. 

But that changed when the new girl came. Her name was Gabriella Montez. And she has pretty much made besties with Zac. They acted like they knew each other, not like you cared that much at first. It wasn't the first time a new girl tried to "take" your spot as Troys Best friend. But this was different. He was changing. He slowly seems to be pulling away from you. You were scared. But the biggest thing that hurt you was what you saw yesterday. there were no secrets between you two... 

*** Yesterday after school***

You were going to tell him. Not like you wanted to. chad had pushed you. He was your other best friend. He found out and has been pushing you to tell Troy. But that also meant he would listen to you talk about him as well. He loved how you would light up when talking about something you loved. It just hurt when it was Troy. He knew just how much you liked him. He was always teasing you when Troy wasn't there. But he thinks it's time to tell Troy. So you were going to. He thinks that Troy is a bit of an idiot for now noticing by now.

While in your head you just automatically opened the gate to his backyard. Your nerves were shooting up. Suddenly you pause. There was talking. Then suddenly there is singing. You peak around the corner of the house. you saw Troy and the new girl sitting. Her arm was linked with his. her head was resting on his shoulder as he sang about the future of them together. 

Suddenly you knew that it was pointless to tell him. he loved her. you wanted to leave but stayed and watched them. at one point you made eye contact with Her. she sneered at you and turned around smiling at him. your heart shattered. not wanting to watch anymore you ran. you heard Troy call out your name but you couldn't look at him. 

Suddenly you realized that you were on your way to Chad's house. unsure where else to go you continue to run. you knock on the door and Chad answers. He doesn't ask any questions. he just pulls you in and holds you close. 

***Chad POV/Same day***

"it's okay, i'm here for you, I got you. just let it out." I whisper. I knew exactly what happened. well maybe not exactly but I could tell it had to do with Troy and Gabriella. he was an idiot. first for not telling Y/N/N about them. I knew it would hurt Y/N/N but not as much as finding out like this. I loved her. but I wanted her happy, I thought that if she told him that he would realize that she was better than Gabriella but apparently that didn't happen. 

"they were singing. about the future and being together." she cries. I pull her closer. I need to tell her. 

"well then screw him. If he can't see how amazing of a person you are then he is a really big idiot. I mean you're talented, beautiful funny, cute, smart, beautiful." she giggles. 

"you said beautiful twice." she says. 

"well it's true." I take a deep breathe. "I love you." she stops breathing. the I can feel her smile into my chest. 

***Y/N POV***

"wait what?" you say. you can feel his heart pounding in his chest as if he just got done with an intense game. 

"I love you Y/N/N, I have since like 4th grade. and in a way i'm happy Troy is an idiot because otherwise i don't think i would have ever told you." he says. his arms were still wrapped around you. suddenly you had an image of you guys together in the future, wrapped up together watching the sun set. 

"I love you too."you say. both of you freeze this time. 

"wait what?" he says this time. 

"I don't know why i never realized it, but i do Chad Danforth I really truly do love you." you look up at him. he looks down at you. as he smiles a soft smile you realize he has only ever looked at you that way. your faces grew closer together. suddenly loud pounding at the door startles you. but chad pulls you close. your lips collide akwardly but you knew it was how it was supposed to be. 

***Back to the Present*** 

also how could I not have seen chad? He cared... he always put me first. Why didn't I see it before...how could he like her? Obviously she didn't really care. she already had plans to go to Stanford. How could he just not care about you anymore? Wrestling with your thoughts you ran into said boy. His face lit up at see you. 

"Hey, Y/N/N, how are you today?" He bows at the waist. 

"Fine, good luck with your game." you say curtly. he looks up confused. but hurt you just walk around him and continue on walking down the hallway. you heard fast footsteps, and you were going to turn and look at him but suddenly your stuff goes flying. 

"Opps, sorry Y/F/N." you automatically smile but suddenly Troy flies up and is in Chads face. 

"watch where you are going!" Chad stumbles backwards confused. you gather your stuff. and stand up quickly. 

"Back off Troy, It was my fault just as much as it was his." you say, your patience with him were running thin. he looks at you confused but you just grab Chad's hand and walk away, talking about the upcoming game. just happy to be with him. 

***Troy's POV***

 what happened to Y/N/N. she sounded so angry with me. which was rare or never happened. but what hurt the most for some unknown reason was how she casually grabbed Chad's hand. he held on just as tightly. they walked and he said something and she laughed. suddenly they are running and i'm left behind wondering what the hell just happened.  

"troy, didn't you hear me?" Gabby came up to me. 

"Uhh, no I have to go, sorry," I say and sprint off to where Chad and my Y/N/N ran off. I round the corner slowing down. but I come to a sudden stop. there in the hall was Chad and Y/N... kissing.. it was quick but I think it would have hurt less to have someone stab me in the heart. suddenly anger over takes me. we didn't keep secrets from each other! sure I have but she doesn't need to know... right? I walk quickly. 

"guys..." they jerk apart from their hug so quickly Y/N hits her head on the wall. 

"ow" she giggles

"you okay?" both chad and I ask. but his hand goes out and gently touches her head. 

"yeah" she stares at him. 

'Uh guys... right here?" Chad turns to me, Y/N/N refuses to turn. that hurt. 

"what do you want man?" Chad asks. he was still holding her hand. 

"Y/N/N... I thought we didn't keep secrets." my damn voice cracks. she opens her mouth but Chad starts talking. 

" Well then, explain you and Gabriella to her." my heart froze. so she did see us. I thought... "you though you could get away with lying to Y/N/N? didn't you?" at this she looks up at me. my mouth opens and closes. she just shakes her head. 

"I loved you... you know?" I stop... she what? " I never told you, i didn't want to hurt our friendship because i thought you would never like me like that. but I think in the long run it was always going to be you." 

"that doesn't explain you and Chad." I say stupidly. 

"I'm getting to that. I always changed my schedule and everything else for you. I wanted you. but you never ever realized that. the other day i saw you guys. that's when i realized that you would never see me like that. but that's when I also saw Chad. he's always been there for me. he always listened, even though it probably hurt. and that's when I realized along the way I had grown feelings for him. but they were blocked out about by my feelings for you. Once I stopped and saw him, I realized that I had been 'chasing' the wrong guy all along." she takes a deep breath "That doesn't mean I won't be here for you. cause I always will. but I can't trust you either. we always said no secrets. but apparently that only applied to me. this wasn't a secret... it literally just happened yesterday. when you came up to us, we were talking about how to tell you." 

"I... i'm such an idiot. I should have told you. everything." I say. but she just shakes her head. 

"we can't change what happened. but we can change how we act in the future. Good luck with your game today." she says. she steps up to me and wraps her arms around me. I hold her close. I knew that no matter what we would never be as close as we were before. and it was my fault. 

***Time skip to the end of the game***

3rd person POV

Troy ended up breaking it off with Gabriella before the game. he realized that part of what happened was because of what she had done. he also played his worst game. they lost by 1 point. 

Chad was so filled with happiness he ended up playing his best game ever. and whenever he looked at the cheerleaders all he saw was Y/N/N cheering him on. he didn't know how he knew it was just for him but he did. and that made him play harder. 

Gabriella was angry. She did love Troy. but her hatred for his best friend caused it to end. she tried to apologize but she could tell he had made up his mind. but she still watched him. proud even though they lost. 

Y/N was happy and sad. happy that she has found someone who truly saw her. She was proud of Chad for playing his best. but she was sad. She knew her friendship with troy would never be the same. you can't keep big secrets like this without consequences. but she wasn't lying when she said that she would be there for him. so while she cheered. she knew she was doing it for both of the guys she loved. hopefully they could eventually work it out and her friendship with Troy could be somewhat salvaged but she wasn't sure. so for now she just shook the thought off and cheered her hardest. because she knew she would always miss this.
