She placed it next to her and then stared at him. She waited to see disgust in his face, or even a slight move of anything. He only looked her up and down.
“A real face,” he said. “Were you expecting me to run away in disgust?”
“I am unwanted back home. It would seem fitting I would be anywhere else.”
He put his hand on her thigh. “Would you like to come somewhere with me?”
She felt the heat spread over her skin from his touch as he looked into her guarded eyes with that same look she’d seen back on the street. She nodded. He told her to meet him below, to hide with her camouflage, and join him on the street just outside the building. The street was empty as she climbed into his vehicle; a large black thing. Silently, he drove her out of the confines of the city. From the window she watched as the city grew small, the forestry bleeding green and black until all that remained was the headlights spreading a bulbous glare against the thinning road. She’d find herself watching Jack; his gaze fixed to the road with his hands gripped to the steering device. Every so often he would look at her and smile. She was unsure what to do, and so she would clumsily look back and then down, and then away as she wondered where they were going.
