Everything had been miserable for the young Rogers. She lost her family. She lost her father at an early age. Then her mother, and finally her brother.
Each time the funeral was small except for Steve's. There never was many family members to begin with. When Steve died, the major funeral was filmed on television. She didn't want it, but since he was a symbol for America, she didn't have much a choice. The army men folded a flag for her and gave her their sincerest apologies, but it didn't matter. She just wanted Steve back.
Y/n had arranged for a private funeral where a tombstone would be placed for Steve alongside their parents even though his body was never found. At the funeral, y/n met the lady Steve would write to her about. She could tell they both loved each other dearly, and it took them both a long time to move on.
Then one day Steve showed up. It didn't make sense. It was certain that he was gone. The strangest thing was that he wouldn't explain anything, and he didn't want too many people to know.
Everything had gotten better. At least it did for Steve and Peggy. It didn't seem much better for the younger Rogers. They noticed how often y/n's moods would change at the drop of a hat.
Eventually Steve and Peggy asked for y/n to be Peggy's maid of honor. She said she'd be glad to, but it didn't put a smile on her face.
Everyone watched Steve and Peggy's first dance as a married couple, and when they finished, Steve went to find his sister.
After a long search, he found her on the balcony looking out on the night sky. Steve placed a hand on her shoulder, and she turned to him. He knew she had to be upset about something, but he couldn't understand.
"I'm fine Steve. I'm just happy for you both."
"Well then could I ask you to dance with me?"
She slowly nodded taking his hand in hers as he lead her to the dance floor. She barely looked at him, and Steve grew more concerned.
"Y/n... Can I ask you something."
"I told you Steve, I'm fine. Please let's just celebrate your marriage."
He noticed she constantly looked at the necklace that hung on her neck. He wanted to ask what was strung to it, but he knew she probably wouldn't tell him.
The song ended, and she tried to smile. She placed a kiss on his cheek and ran into the crowd. Steve tried to follow her, but after he made it through the crowd it was like she vanished.
Steve finally remembered the little garden he saw when y/n, Peggy, and he looked at the venue. He found her sitting on a bench and now the necklace was in her hands. The little item that hung on it was a locket.
"Y/n..."
She turned around and stood up. She tried to run away, but Steve grabbed her arm. She was so shocked that she dropped the necklace.
Before she could grab it herself Steve had already picked up the necklace.
"Steve... Please... Give it back."
He looked to see her struggling to not let tears fall down her face.
"I don't like seeing you so upset y/n. I want the best for you. I wish you would talk to me, but... I respect your wishes."
He handed it back to her, and she put it back around her neck letting the locket be concealed by the cover of her dress.
"It's pretty. When did you get it?"
She didn't answer. She tried to walk away again.
"Please tell me y/n."
She stopped and turned back. She walked to him and began to take off the necklace.
"You want to know about why I'm so sad. You want to know about the necklace. Here. Open it. You'll get answers to both."
She placed the circular locket onto his palm. He looked from the small object back to his sister. She nodded, and he opened the locket. On one side was a picture of Bucky Barnes. The other side was engraved with Your James.
"You... You loved him didn't you?"
"Now you know why I'm feeling so blue, mad, and jealous."
"I don't understand."
"Steve... I... I love Bucky, but I never got to tell him. I think he loved me too, but now I'll never know."
"Y/n... I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked."
She sat back down and held her hands together. "Steve... Now that Bucky is gone.. I need to tell you something... Steve.... James didn't enlist. He was drafted."
"I told him to tell you he enlisted."
"What?"
"Steve. If you tried to enlist anymore times.... Steve you could have been arrested."
"I don't care. I would have done anything to make sure I was doing anything I could to help the effort."
"Steve the people you fighted for took my James away. I'm thankful for everyone who has fought for my freedom including Bucky, but I'm one of the ones who won't get to tell the man she loves thank you for your service even though I know it's not what you choose to do."
Steve didn't know what to say. His sister and best friend had lied to him, but right know he had to try to think of her.
"Steve. I'm sorry I didn't tell you, and I'm sorry I got Bucky to lie. I just I was upset. I feared I was going to lose Bucky. I didn't want to lose you too. I was selfish. Then you got what you wanted anyway, and I was alone. I was so alone, but I had hope that you both would come back."
She got up and moved to a fountain. "You both died. I had no one. I couldn't make myself find new friends. I had no one to go to. Then you came back. It was a miracle, but just like you want to give me answers you never gave me answers to your revival. Regardless, for months that denial hit me again. I thought that if you came back Bucky would come back."
"You got to be reunited with your love, and I didn't."
She felt the necklace being put back on. Then she felt Steve kiss her forehead. She was about to give him a hug, but she looked to see he was gone.
It had been several weeks, and y/n had felt so lonely. Steve hadn't written to her, but she didn't write him either. She kept herself busy at the little bookstore in town. It still didn't help her get over the fact that everything was so different.
After another day of work, y/n went back to her apartment to find Steve inside.
"We both sure know how to hide spare keys." He was going to hand her the key, but she insisted him to keep it.
"How was the moon?"
"What?"
"The honeymoon?"
"Oh, it was great. Look, I'm sorry about what happened at the reception. I'm sorry I didn't realize you loved Bucky."
"There's no need to apologise Stevie. I've appreciated all you and Peggy have done to try and make me feel better. I'm sorry that I've been so glum and probably even a bit rude."
Steve walked to her hugging her. "It's all right y/n. Look there's something I need to give you."
He let go of her and walked to the table where a grey and red suit was placed as well as a helmet.
"Steve... I don't understand."
"Will you just put it on?"
"Not until you tell me the meaning of it."
"I can't, not until you put it on."
Y/n normally trusted Steve, but this was ridiculous. She really wasn't going to put it on until she saw the sad look on Steve's face. She grumbled grabbing the outfit to go put it on in her room.
"Steve this thing itches, and it looks ridiculous. Where did you even find something like this?"
"The future."
Y/n laughed. The future. She was about to take off the helmet when Steve hugged her.
"You'll see soon. I love you."
She was about to go closer to him when everything went bright. As fast as everything went bright, it was just as quick to go dark.
Then she saw she was standing on a platform near a lake. She took off the helmet and looked around. Then she noticed someone sitting on a bench.
She walked over completely confused.
"Excuse me? Where am I?"
The person who turned around shocked her. Was this some crazy dream?
"James?"
"It's so good to you again doll."
Bucky had to catch the confused girl who managed to fall. Her life really was about to change.
