Bucky was doing well. He was getting back memories more and more as the days passed on. Now that he wasn't being hunted down, people were respecting him more. In fact, SHIELD had invited him to a veteran's ball.

Steve was also attending, and he was bringing Natasha with him. Bucky also wanted to bring someone, but he didn't know who to bring.

"I see your trading dance partners." Bucky spoke as he sat with Nat.

"What do you mean Bucky?"

"When I was the Winter soldier, I know I trained you. I also remember dancing with you sometimes in the ballet."

Nat frowned shaking her head, "Bucky, that wasn't me. I was never a ballerina."

"But... Whoever I danced with looked like you."

Nat looked around then grabbed his hand. She led him to her living room that she shared with Wanda. She went to her room and brought out a file.

"You didn't dance with me."

He opened the files and saw a picture of a woman who was actually quite attractive. He continued to look while Nat explained.

"Her name is y/n l/n. While I was out on missions, she posed as me. She is able to make herself look like anyone she wants, but that picture is how she really looks. They made you dance with her because she seemed to calm you down. Things started to get bad when she realized what they were doing to you. She left, but managed to keep in contact with me every now and then. The thing is that she's still alive, and she hasn't aged either."

Bucky looked to Nat with wide curious eyes. "Where is she now?"

"Well she is closer than you probably think, but she's not associated with SHIELD. They don't know she exists. That's why I brought you here. She's like a sister, and if she found out I said anything to someone who might try to bring her here, she might kill me."

"She won't kill you if I find her will she?"

"If you're taking her to that ball she might, but I want you both to be happy." Nat handed him a piece of paper and smiled leaving him alone.

Bucky opened it, already heading for the compound's garage. He got on his motorcycle and headed for his destination. He didn't know why he was going to this lady's house. She probably wouldn't even remember him. He obviously didn't know her, but he was willing to find out.

Her house was in the woods, but it all looked so beautiful. There was a certain peace he felt, and he was becoming calm. He walked up to the door ringing the bell.

The door opened to reveal the very same lady. She looked exactly the same as her picture. Her eyes widened, and she gasped.

"James Barnes, oh wait Natasha told me you go by Bucky. I'm sorry. I can't believe you're here. Please, come in."

He walked in and was welcomed with the smell of vanilla and old books. A record player was playing music from the band he was listening to called Journey. He watched her turn off the record player, and she motioned him to the couch.

"Would you like some tea or something else to drink?"

"Tea would be nice." He nodded.

She soon came back with a hot cup of tea. "This tea..."

"Is your favorite? I know. I used to make it for you"

"After every performance and after missions."

She nodded sitting close to him. "I... I know you probably don't want to hear it, but I'm sorry for what they did to you. I'm... I'm sorry I wasn't brave enough."

"What do you mean?"

She frowned and looked down. "I could've saved you. I could've gotten you out of that organization. We... We could've ran away together, and I could've taken you to someone who could restore your memories. I'm so sorry Bucky. All those years, and I just abandoned you."

He noticed tears slipping down her face, and he suddenly felt sad. He held her hand with his metal hand, and he wiped away her tears. She looked up to him, and he softly smiled.

"You have nothing to be sorry about. It sounds like you didn't know until nothing could be done about it. I'm okay, and I'm here with you now. In fact, I was wondering if my dance partner would like to accompany me to a veteran's ball?" He smiled rubbing her cheek.

A smile instantly formed on her lips, "Really? I'd love to. I... I honestly haven't danced since I ran away."

Bucky smirked, "Well I'm here to bring you back doll, but... It is being held by SHIELD."

"I... I know. Natasha called and told me you were probably going to ask me." She blushed.

"Of course she did. Anyway, let's get you to the compound. Nat will probably be excited to see you."

She nodded and Bucky led her to the motorcycle. She was quiet the whole time, but she held onto him tightly. Bucky honestly loved the feeling of someone holding him. He hadn't had much contact with anyone probably since he danced with her so long ago.

When they got to the compound, Natasha took y/n's hand and probably went to go pick out dresses. Bucky went to his room so he could put on his uniform. He felt weird putting it on again, but he also felt like it helped him come back more. He slicked his hair back and put on his hat.

He went back to the living room where Steve was also waiting. He hugged his best friend, which he considered his brother, and sat down waiting for Natasha and y/n.

When he saw y/n, his heart began to beat rapidly. She looked stunning when he first saw her, and she looked just as stunning now in her dress.

"So this is what you look like in a uniform?" Y/n walked up to Bucky.

"This is what I look like in a uniform." Bucky chuckled.

Bucky linked y/n's arm with his as they all walked out to one of the cars. When the group made it, they all began to socialize with the other veterans.

Bucky pulled y/n onto the dance floor and began to lead her in a waltz. Eventually he lead her to the gardens. He held her hand as they walked around.

Then she stopped him. She turned around and looked to him. "Tonight has been so wonderful. I... I want to give you something. I've kept it for a very long time."

Bucky was shocked to see her take off his dog tags. She was about to hand it to him when he stopped her.

"No. I remember. I was starting to forget my name already. I was surprised that Hydra hadn't taken my tags in the first place. I figured I'd forget it soon, and I didn't want them to take my tags away. You had helped me so much that I gave them to you. You didn't want them at first, and I couldn't directly tell you what was happening. You could tell I was upset, so you took my tags and gave me one of the best hugs I'd ever had. Even though I eventually forgot my name, I always remembered seeing the tags around your neck. I didn't know what they were, but I knew they were important." He smiled squeezing your hand.

"I never took them off until tonight. I... I just thought they deserved to be with their rightful owner."

Bucky put both his hands over her own. "Please y/n, please keep them. They've been with you longer, and it would mean a lot to me if you kept them just like then."

She smiled and put the tags on once more. She kept them visible for anyone to see. She looked to him again, but this time was different. She kissed Bucky's cheek.

Before she could pull away, Bucky kissed her sweetly on the the lips. He pulled away and held her close. "I'm... I'm sorry. I know we don't know each other well, but I feel so warm with you. I don't know."

She cupped his cheek gently rubbing it while looking directly into his eyes.

"Bucky, I want you to take your time. I want you to have the freedom to choose what you want. I want you to have a happy life. No matter what you choose, I want you to know my heart will always belong to you." She closed her eyes still holding him close.

She was surprised when she felt his lips connect to her own. Once again, the kiss was short, but it was just as special. He pulled away and rested his forehead on her own.

"I don't want to force you into a relationship. Well I don't want to rush things, but I do want to be with you. I want to at least get to know you better. You're my dancing partner, and I want us to always be in each other's lives."

She just mumbled yes happy to be in his arms again. They remained like that for a long time just happy to be in each other's embrace.
