This was it. Bucky was being sent off to war early in the morning. He honestly was trying everything he could to distract himself from thinking about what might happen when he would get on that bus. He thought the world's fair was the best idea for that.
He walked around with his friend Steve as he looked at all the exhibits. He also brought his sister and cousin to walk around with them, but the girls had long since walked away.
"Bucky, your scratching your uniform again." Steve broke the silence.
The young soldier looked down realizing Steve was right. He slowly placed his hands in his pockets and began to take deep breaths as they walked closer to a stage with a vibrant red car. A man walked out and began to talk about a future where cars might actually fly. Bucky was fully absorbed in the show until the car crashed.
He turned to talk to Steve only to realize he was gone. He grumbled realizing Steve must've went to try and enlist. Bucky was about to go to find him when he noticed a light in the distance. His curiosity got the better of him, and he began to follow the light.
He now found himself in a alleyway. It was empty except for one lone object at the very end.
"What is a Police Public Call Box, and what is it doing in an alleyway?"
Bucky took his time as he walked closer to the box. He walked the sides of the box and stood still at the door. He read the words on the door and almost considered picking up the phone in the small compartment. Then he put his hand on the handle. He barely pushed the door and it opened.
His jaw dropped to the floor when he walked in. How could all this technology fit in one small box? It was as if he truly stepped into the future. He walked further in hearing music he'd never heard. It was calm in a sense, but the unfamiliarity added to the ambiance of the box. He also heard two voices one male and one female. The male voice had an accent, while the female voice sounded American.
"Doctor, are you ready to look around the fair?"
"Of course I am. You chose a New York free of Daleks, Cybermen, and... Well it doesn't matter. Now come on."
The two turned around and for the first time, noticed the soldier standing there. The girl was the first to walk to him. She smiled extending her hand.
"Hello. I'm y/n."
"Y/n, I thought you locked the door." The man walked to her and looked just a bit aggravated.
"I did. You know the TARDIS. Opens the door to those who need it." The girl spoke looking at him almost like a lost puppy. "Even if I didn't lock the door, he's not alien. He most likely would've attacked already."
"Not always the case precious star. Anyway, I can't stay mad with you." They both then turned their gaze to the the man before them. "Hello. I'm the Doctor."
"Bucky. What is this place?" He soon found himself learning more and more about this TARDIS. Of course now that he new about other worlds, different timelines, and aliens, he had to promise to never tell anyone about this. He didn't plan on it anyway. Everyone probably would've thought he was crazy if he spoke word of an alien that looked like a man with two hearts at the age of 900.
He had particularly become fond of y/n. Especially since he had discovered that she was from the future at least the future compared to the present he was in now. She was unique. He'd never seen a dame like her, and even though he had never met her, she almost seemed familiar.
"Doctor... Do you think perhaps we could reschedule the fair and show Bucky the future or some of our favorite planets?" She smiled walking closer to the time lord who was really only called by "The Doctor."
"I don't know y/n. We... We talked about this. If we go to the future... It could be altered once he gets there on his own. If we take him anywhere, it may still alter his future and many more people here."
Bucky became uncomfortable as they talked. He didn't realize it until he heard the sound of the material of his uniform being scratched. Once more, he placed his hands in his pockets taking deep breaths.
He closed his eyes momentarily as he counted in his head. He stopped when he felt a hand wrap around his. He saw her just looking at him. Her face slightly laced with concern just enough to tell him she was there for him.
"I'm okay... I think." He finally whispered.
She gently led him back to the doctor, who had turned to face away from the two. Y/n tapped his shoulder and he turned around. He must've been sad himself, for he quickly had to put on a smile.
"I suppose our trip to the fair has been cancelled."
"No. I think we should go here with Bucky." She spoke returning her gaze to Bucky.
The doctor nodded. "Well I suppose you should get dressed up then."
She nodded as she let go of Bucky's hand. She went deeper into the TARDIS, and Bucky kept his gaze there.
"You like her don't you?" The Doctor spoke after some odd minutes of silence.
"She's different."
"Of course she is different. She's from the future, but I assume you'd like her regardless."
Bucky raised up his hands and backed up. "She's with you, I'm sorry."
The Doctor laughed as he turned to look in the direction she went, "No. She's more like a daughter to me. She's important. She's all I have." He mumbled the last part so Bucky couldn't hear.
Before either could discuss or speak another word, y/n had stepped out. She looked like she had always lived in the forties. Bucky couldn't help but admire her. She smiled so brightly when she saw him again, and she walked to him while linking her arm in the Doctor's.
"Precious star, go ahead and walk on with Bucky. I'll be behind you okay." He cupped her cheeks placing a kiss on her forehead watching as she walked to Bucky.
He opened the door for her as they walked back outside. He felt a little more at ease now that her arm was linked in his own, and he began to enjoy the fair once more. He showed her his favorite exhibits, and he was the one who did most of the talking. He was just so absorbed in science, technology, and the future.
"I wish you could tell me about the future, but I'm guessing that'll mess things up?" Bucky looked to her as a small frown appeared on his face.
"I'm sorry Bucky. I want to. I really do, but I just can't. Even if my bowtie Doctor wasn't here, I'd still probably not tell. It's just to keep everyone safe." She also momentarily frowned before squeezing his arm.
They walked around in silence after the exchange of words. Neither really knew what to say, but they enjoyed the company the other brought. Bucky often wanted to ask about her life and all that she'd done, but he was scared it would somehow alter the future as well.
"Bucky, do you mind taking us to eat?" Y/n finally spoke, and Bucky was glad to finally hear her voice.
He nodded giving her a bright smile as he led her to his favorite diner on the corner of the street closest to his favorite park.
"Bucky. Glad to see you here. While you were gone, I finally get to help the war effort."
"Steve... Really?"
"Really. Anyway. I'm going home. I've got to pack for training. Enjoy your date."
The man named Steve walked up to her extending his hand, "Nice to meet you. I'm Steve."
He was surprised when she shook his hand in return. "Nice to meet you too. I'm y/n."
Steve nodded as he walked out the door, and after they could no longer see him, Bucky led her to one of the booths. They had gotten some fries and ice cream, and he was surprised to see her dunk her fries in the ice cream. He also tried, and he wished he would've thought to do that years ago. The combination of the two foods was so good, that he thanked her for showing him.
"Thanks for the food Bucky, but you should've let me pay some amount." Y/n spoke as she linked her arm in his once more.
"No problem, and I wanted to pay for it doll."
He smiled when he saw a deep shade of red tint her cheeks. He wanted to tease her about it, but he changed his mind. He found himself leading her back to the convention. He was trying to do anything he could to extend what sliver of time he had left. Everything seemed a blur, but he managed to focus on y/n. She seemed to stop time itself like it was only her and him. He didn't understand why he felt so strongly about her, and it broke his heart to be leaving this woman that he felt like he'd known for years.
"Y/n... It's time to go."
Already time was running out. Bucky watched the Doctor walk up to the pair of them. He seemed to have some urgency in his eyes, and he extended his hand to y/n.
She somberly looked to him then back to the Doctor. She let go of his hand slowly walking to the Doctor. Then she turned back around and ran to Bucky. She wrapped her arms around his neck and placed a kiss on his cheek.
"I'll never forget you Bucky Barnes."
He watched as the two walked back into the TARDIS. He thought about trying to go back with them, but the TARDIS had already disappeared.
Bucky couldn't believe she was gone, and he didn't even really know her. She really did fascinate him though. He began to walk to his apartment putting his hands back in his pockets. For some time, he forgot that he'd be shipped of to war in the morning.
Then get froze. There was something that he didn't realize until just now.
"I never told her my last name."
