Jacob wasn't trying to outcast her. He'd simply wanted to protect her. That fact alone made her want to smile.

His response came as a reluctant mumble, "yeah." 

Nothing else was said and she proceeded to enjoy the way his thumb kept rubbing circles on the back of her skin in a comforting manner. Somehow, sitting with Jacob right then and there felt like a moment in time that Natalia wished could last forever. 

"Can I ask you something?" 

Natalia cocked her head at the wolf who had hunched low, his shoulders rounding over in a defensive manner. Her silence gave him the confirmation to go ahead. 

"Do you..." he swallowed a lump down his throat, "do you think I'm a monster?" 

And when his eyes met hers once more, Natalia spotted the flash of fear in his eyes, the way he kept biting down onto his bottom lip. 

She wanted nothing more than to hug him. 

Her heart skipped a beat at the thought, but she ignored it in favor of giving him an answer. 

"No," her other hand came to a rest atop his, which stilled at contact, "No, I'm not afraid of you." 

Jacob heaved a relieved sigh and his entire body relaxed. He stood up then and released his grip. Instantly, the space between her fingers felt a little too cold to her liking. 

"I gotta go," he murmured, leaning closer to her and searching her eyes for silent confirmation, which she gave with a nod, "shift starts soon." 

"Okay," she whispered as the wolf allowed his lips to drop to her forehead. He kissed her softly, briefly, an unspoken promise that he would be back and that this relationship meant something to him, "goodnight, Talia." 

And just like that, he was gone. 

It took her a few seconds to calm her heart. When it did, she lifted a finger to her forehead, pressing it there, to the space where his lips had been.
