Sam was on the phone. "No, Dad was in California last we heard from him. We just thought... he comes to you for 'munitions... maybe you've seen him in the last few weeks. Just, call us if you hear anything."

"'kay."

"Thanks."

"You bet."

Sam looked to his brother and friend and Dean shook his head. "No, same as the last time I looked. Nothing Adeline or I can make out... I love the guy, but I swear, he writes like friggin' Yoda."

"You know, maybe we should call the Feds," Sam suggested. "File a missing person's."

Adeline stared at Sam. "We've talked about this. Your dad would be angry if we put the Feds on his tail."

"I don't care anymore." A phone rang and Dean crossed the room. "After all the happened back in Kansas, I mean... he should've been there, Dean, Adeline. You said so yourself. You tried to call him and... nothing."

"I know!" Dean cried, rummaging through his duffel. "Where the hell is my cell phone?"

"You know, he could be dead for all we know."

"Don't say that! He's not dead! He's -- he's..."

"He's what? He's hiding? He's busy?"

Dean found his phone and flicked it open.

"Huh," Dean noted quietly. "I don't believe it."

"What?" Sam and Adeline asked.

"It's, uh... It's a text message. It's coordinates."

Dean began typing on his laptop.

"You think Dad was texting us?" Sam questioned.

"He's given us coordinates before," Dean reasoned.

"The man can barely work a toaster, Dean."

"Sam, it's good news! It means he's okay, or alive at least."

Adeline, patting Eva's back, quickly changed the subject. "Well, was there a number on the caller ID?"

Dean glanced at her. "Nah, it said 'unknown'."

"Where do the coordinates point?"

"That's the interesting part. Rockford, Illinois."

Sam frowned. "Okay, and that's interesting how?"

"I checked the local Rockford paper. Take a look at this." He showed them the article. "This cop, Walter Kelly, comes home from his shift, shoots his wife, then puts the gun in his mouth, blows his brains out. And earlier that night, Kelly and his partner responded to a call at the Roosevelt Asylum."

"Okay, I'm not following. Not sure if Adeline is. What does this have to do with us?"

"Dad earmarked the same asylum in the journal. Let's see..." He found the page. "Here. Seven unconfirmed sightings, two deaths -- till last week at least. I think this is where he wants us to go."

Sam snorted. "This is a job... Dad wants us to work a job."

Adeline shrugged. "Well, maybe we'll meet up with him? Maybe he's there?"

"Maybe he's not? I mean, he could be sending us there, by ourselves, to hunt this thing."

"Who cares!" Dean yelled. "If he wants us there, it's good enough for me and Saoirse!"

"This doesn't strike you two as weird? The texting? The coordinates?"

"Sam! Dad's tellin' us to go somewhere, we're goin'."

Sam made a bitchface and sighed. Adeline sighed, annoyed with all of Dean's yelling.

They made their way to Illinois and to a bar.

INT. BAR

Cop one sat at the bar.

"You're Daniel Gunderson," Dean said. "You're a cop, right?"

"Yeah," Gunderson replied.

"Huh. I'm uh, Nigel Tufnel, The Chicago Tribune. Mind if I ask you a couple of questions, about your partner?"

"Yeah, I do. I'm just tryin' to have a beer here."

"That's okay, I swear it won't take that long. I just want to get the story in your words."

"A week ago, my partner was sitting in that chair. Now he's dead. You gonna ambush me here?"

"Sorry. But I need to know what happened."

Sam pushed Dean aside roughly.

"Hey buddy, why don't you leave the poor guy alone!" Sam told his brother. "The man's an officer! Why don't'cha show a little respect!"

Dean paused, staring, then walked off.

"You two didn't havta do that," Gunderson told them.

"Yeah, course we did," Sam answered. "That guy's a serious jerk. Let us buy you a beer, huh?" He looked at the barman. "Three?"

"Thanks."

---

Dean looked at Sam who left the bar. "Shoved me kinda hard in there, buddy boy, Seri."

"We had to sell it, didn't we?" Sam replied. "It's method acting."

"Huh?"

"Never mind."

"What'd you two find out from Gunderson?"

"So, Walter Kelly was a good cop. Head of his class, even-keeled, he had a bright future ahead of him."

"What about at home?"

"He and his wife had a few fights, like everybody, but he was mostly smooth sailing," Adeline answered. "They were even talking about having kids."

Dean thought for a moment. "All right, so either Kelly had some deep-seated crazy waiting to bust out, or something else did it to him."

"Right," Sam and Adeline agreed.

"What'd Gunderson tell you two about the asylum?"

"A lot."

They made their way to the asylum and jumped over the tall chain linked fence, Adeline being helped over,  and entered.

Sam pointed to a sign over one door. "So apparently the cops chased the kids here... into the south wing."

"South wing, huh?" Dean repeated. "Wait a second." He flipped through John's journal. "1972. Three kids broke into the south wing, only one survived. Way he tells it, one of his friends went nuts and started lighting up the place."

"So whatever's going on, the south wing is the heart of it."

"But if the kids are spelunking the asylum, why aren't there a ton more deaths?"

Sam looked around and noted the broken chain. "Looks like the doors are usually chained. Could've been chained up for years."

Adeline nodded. "Yeah, to keep people out. Or to keep something in. Eva shouldn't be here. But I don't see another option. I don't want to bring her and I don't want to leave her."

"I get it. It's a tough choice."

They looked at each other and Sam slowly pushed the door open.

As they walked down the hallway, Dean said, "Let me know if you see any dead people, Haley Joel."

"Dude, enough," Sam warned.

"I'm serious. You gotta be careful, all right? Ghosts are attracted to that whole ESP thing you got going on."

"I told you, it's not ESP! I just have strange vibes sometimes. Weird dreams."

"Yeah, whatever. Don't ask, don't tell."

"You get any reading on the thing?"

"Nope. Of course, it doesn't mean no one's home."

"Spirits can't appear during certain hours of the day."

"Yeah, the freaks come out at night."

In a deadpan tone, Dean asked, "Hey Sam, who do you think is the hotter psychic: Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Love Hewitt, or you?"

Sam pushed Dean who laughed and Adeline smiled briefly.

They made their way to another room and looked around.

Dean whistled. "Man. Electro-shock. Lobotomies. They did some twisted stuff to these people. Kinda like my man Jack in Cuckoo's Nest." He made crazy eyes and grinned at Sam and Adeline.

Sam ignored him, Adeline rolled her eyes, and Dean's smile dropped as they looked around more.

"So. Whaddya two think?" Dean asked. "Ghosts possessing people?"

"Maybe," Sam replied. "Or maybe it's more like Amityville, or the Smurl hunting."

"Spirits driving them insane," Adeline noted. "Kinda like Jack in the Shining." Her expression turned sad. "Kyle loved that movie."

"Dean," Sam called as his brother looked at him. "When are we going to talk about it?"

"Talk about what?" Dean asked.

"About the fact that Dad's not here."

"Oh. I see. How 'bout... never."

"I'm being serious, man. He sent us here. We'll pick up the search later."

"It doesn't matter what he wants."

"See. That attitude? Right there? That is why I always get the extra cookie."

"Dad could be in trouble, we should be looking for him. We deserve some answers, Dean. I mean, this is our family we're talking about."

"I understand that, Sam, but he's given us an order."

"So what, we gotta always follow Dad's orders?"

"Of course we do."

Sam gave Dean a frustrated face. Dean stared at him, then turned away, ending the conversation.

Dean poked around and picked up a sign. "'Sanford Ellicott'... You two know what we gotta do. We gotta find out more about the south wing. See if something happened here."

Dean walked away, leaving the sign with Sam and Adeline.

Sam stared at the sign with a bitchface and turned to Adeline. "You wanna-"

Adeline shook her head. "Please, no."

Sam nodded, understanding what she wasn't saying.

---

In the waiting room, Sam sat on the couch, flicking through a magazine. A man came to the open door. The sign on the door read 'Dr. James Ellicott, Clinical Psychiatry'.

"Sam Winchester?" Dr. Ellicott called.

"That's me," Sam confirmed.

"Come on in."

They moved to the inner room and Sam smiled. "Thanks again for seeing me last minute." He looked around the room. "Dr... Ellicott. Ellicott, that name. Wasn't there a... a Dr. Sandford Ellicott? Yeah, he was a chief psychiatrist somewhere."

"My father was a chief of staff at the old Roosevelt Asylum. How did you know?"

"Ah. Well, I'm sorta... a local history buff. Hey, wasn't there, an incident or something? In the hospital, I guess. In the south wing, right?"

"We're on your dollar, Sam. We're here to talk about you."

"Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah. Sure."

"So. How's things?"

"Ah, things are good, Doctor."

"Good. Whatcha been doing?"

"Ahh, same old. I just been on a... on a road trip with my brother and a family friend's wife and her daughter."

"Was that fun?"

Sam paused for a long moment. "Loads. Umm. You know, we... ahh... we... met... a lot of... interesting people. Did a lot of... ah... interesting things... ahhh. You know? What was it exactly that happened in the south wing? I forget..."

"Look, if you're a local history buff, you know all about the Roosevelt riot."

"The riot. Well, no. I know. I'm just curious."

"Sam. Let's cut the bull, shall we. You're avoiding the subject."

"What subject?"

"You. Now I'll make you a deal. I'll tell you all about the Roosevelt riot, if you tell me something honest about yourself. Like, uh, this brother, girl and family friend's wife you're road tripping with. How do you feel about them?"

Sam's eyes widened.

Dean and Adeline were leaning against the door. Dean was looking bored and Adeline was swaying a smiling Eva.

Sam walked past and Dean and Adeline caught up and matched his pace.

"Dude!" Dean called. "You were in there forever. What the hell were you talking about?"

"Just the hospital, you know," Sam replied.

"And..." Adeline pressed.

"And the south wing? It's where they housed the really hard cases. The psychotics, the criminally insane."

"Sounds cozy," Dean muttered.

"Yeah. And one night in '64, they rioted. Attacked staff. Attacked each other."

"So the patients took over the asylum?"

"Apparently."

"Any deaths?" Adeline asked.

"Some patients, some staff. I guess it was pretty gory. Some of the bodies were never even recovered, including our chief of staff, Ellicott."

"Whaddya mean, never recovered?" Dean questioned.

"Cops scoured every inch of the place but I guess the patients must've... stuffed the bodies somewhere hidden."

"That's grim."

"Yeah. So, they transferred all the remaining patients and closed the hospital down."

"So, to sum it up, we've got a bunch of violent deaths and a bunch of unrecovered bodies."

"And a bunch of angry spirits."

"Good times," Adeline commented. "Let's check out the hospital tonight. Eva should be okay, but I'll have her monitor on me. And hopefully I can leave if need be."

That night, they made their way back to the hospital. Sam pushed open the door, Dean and Adeline beside him.

Sam was holding a video camera and a flashlight. Dean had an EMF meter. Adeline was holding a flashlight and another EMF meter.

"Getting readings?" Sam asked his brother and friend.

Dean nodded. "Yeah, big time."

"This place is orbing like crazy."

Adeline glanced around as Dean said, "Definitely multiple spirits out and about."

"And if these uncovered bodies are causing the haunting..."

"We gotta find 'em and burn 'em. Just be careful though. The only thing that makes me more nervous than a pissed off spirit... is the pissed off spirit of a psychotic killer."

They walked through the halls.

Sam, Dean and Adeline kept looking and the boys moved into separate rooms. Adeline remained with Dean. After a minute, Sam saw an old woman through the video lens; white-haired, one eye bloody and hanging out, moving toward him.

"Dean? Adeline?" Sam called. "Dean! Adeline!" They ran into the room, rummaging through their bags. "Shotgun!"

"Sam, get down!" Dean shouted. "Seri, get back!

Sam threw himself on the ground and Saoirse stepped back. Dean shot the woman and she disintegrated. They looked around, gasping.

"That was weird," Sam said.

"Yeah," Dean agreed. "You're telling me." He started moving out of the room and his brother and friend followed.

"No, Dean, I mean it was weird that she didn't attack me."

"Looked pretty aggro from where Seri and I were standing."

"She didn't hurt me. She didn't even try. So if she didn't wanna hurt me, then what did she want?"

A noise came from a room they were passing. Dean immediately raised his shotgun and Sam and Adeline flicked on their flashlights and shined them into the room. They approached a metal bed covered in a ragged sheet on its side. They saw the top of a blonde head behind it and braced themselves. Sam reached out and tipped the bed over. The girl was crouched facing the corner. She spun around, terrified and gasping.

"It's all right, we're not going to hurt you," Dean told her. "It's okay. What's your name?"

"Katherine," the girl replied. "Kat."

"Okay. I'm Dean, this is Sam, and this is Adeline."

"What are you doing here?" Sam asked.

"Um. My boyfriend, Gavin."

"Is he here?" Adeline questioned.

"Somewhere. He thought it would be fun, try and see some ghosts. I thought t was all just... you know. Pretend. I've seen things. I heard Gavin scream and..."

"All right," Dean said. "Kat? Come on. Sam and Adeline are gonna get you out of here and then we're gonna and your boyfriend."

"No! No. I'm not going to leave without Gavin. I'm coming with you."

"It's no joke around here, okay. It's dangerous."

"That's why I gotta find him."

The trio exchanged a look and Sam shrugged.

"All right, I guess we're gonna split up then," Dean decided. "Let's go."

Sam left and wandered around. "Gavin... Gavin?"

Kat, Adeline and Dean walked as Kat called, "Gavin... Gavin?"

Dean glanced at Kat. "I got a question for ya. You've seen lots of horror movies, yeah?"

"I guess so."

"Do us a favor. Next time you see one? Pay attention. When someone says a place is haunted, don't go in!"

Kat looked him and nodded.

---

Sam found Gavin on the ground and crouched to shake him. Gavin woke and freaked out. "Hey, Gavin. It's okay, I'm here to help."

"Who are you?" Gavin asked.

"My name is Sam. Uh, we found your girlfriend."

"Kat?" Gavin stood. "Is she all right?"

"Yeah. She's worried about you. Are you okay?"

"I was running. I think I fell."

"You were running from what?"

"There was... there was this girl. Her face. It was all messed up."

"Okay listen, did this girl... did she try and hurt you?"

"What? No, she... uh..."

"She what?"

"She... kissed me."

"Uh... um... but... but she didn't hurt you, physically?"

"Dude! She kissed me. I'm scarred for life!"

"Well, trust me, it could have been worse. Now do you remember anything else?"

"She uh... actually, she tried to whisper something in my ear."

"What?"

"I don't know. I ran like hell."

---

In another hallway, Dean was leading the way. His flashlight began to fade.

Dean shook the flashlight. "You son of a bitch." He reached into his pocket. "It's all right, I got a lighter."

Kat turned to look behind them. "Ow. You're hurting my arm."

Dean frowned. "What are you talking about?"

They turned to look at each other and realized they were too far apart to be touching and looked down. A disembodied hand was clutching Kat's arm.

Kat grabbed Adeline's arm and they were dragged into a room, the metal door slamming behind them. Dean raced to it and struggled to pull it open. Kat and Adeline banged on it from the inside, but it didn't budge.

Dean continued struggling with the door.

"Lemme out!" Kat yelled. "Please!"

"Dean!" Adeline cried.

"Kat! Adeline!" Dean called. "Hang on!"

Dean smashed at the door with a metal pipe and tried to jimmy it open.

Inside, Kat and Adeline slowly backed up, looking at the door. Someone stood behind them, breathing heavily. When the girls spun around, no one was there. Dean continued banging on the door. The girls turned and saw the ghost. He was tall, heavyset, had long dark oily hair, and his face was a bloody mess. Kat screamed as they backed up to the door and backed into him again. Kat let out another scream.

Sam ran down the hall, followed by Gavin. "What's going on?"

"They're inside with one of them. Sam, they've got her. Eva's already lost her dad. If she loses her mom..."

"Help me!" Kat and Adeline screamed.

"Kat!" Gavin yelled.

Kat slid against the door as the ghost approached. "Get us outta here!"

"Kat, Adeline, it's not going to hurt you," Sam said. "Listen to me. You've both got to face it. You've got to calm down."

Dean turned to Sam, astonished. "They've gotta what?!"

"We have to what?!" Kat and Adeline shouted.

"These spirits, they're not trying to hurt us, they're trying to communicate. You two gotta face it. You two gotta listen to it."

"You face it!" Kat retorted.

"No! It's the only way to get out of there."

"No!"

"Look at it, come on. You can do it."

Kat and Adeline took in a deep breath, and turned to face the ghost. He leaned in, close to their faces.

"Kat?" Gavin called.

"Adeline?" Dean said, glancing to Sam. "Man, I hope you're right about this."

"Yeah, me too," Sam agreed.

They waited outside the door in tense silence. The lock clicked and the door slowly opened. Kat and Adeline were standing in the doorway.

"Oh, Kat," Gavin said.

Dean hugged Adeline, and despite the awkwardness, or she didn't pull away. Sam went inside to check out the room. He came back out, shaking his head at Dean.

"137," Kat and Adeline stated.

"Sorry?"

"It whispered in our ear," Kat told them. "137."

Adeline and the boys said in sync, "Room number."

The trio crouched against the wall so they wouldn't be overheard.

"All right," Sam said. "So if these spirits aren't trying to hurt anyone..."

"Then what are they trying to do?" Dean finished.

"Maybe that's what they've been trying to tell us..."

"I guess we'll find out," Adeline said.

"All right."

Dean looked back at the teens. "So, now, are you guys ready to leave this place?"

"That's an understatement," Kat replied.

"Okay." He turned to Sam and Adeline. "You two get them outta here. I'm going to find room 137."

Adeline shook her head.
