Name: Aya Nara

Age: 18

Species: Substitute Soul Reaper/Nephilim

Height: 5'4"

Life Story: Aya never knew her parents. She has been an orphan all her life. When she went with Ichigo to save Rukia, she bonded with Kenpachi, who is like a father figure to her now. That's also where she met her close friends. She spends most of her time in the Soul Society, since she doesn't have very many friends in the World of the Living. Her father was an angel and fell victim to human needs during his stay on Earth. Aya isn't pure, so she can't fly and doesn't have wings, but she can control fire with a thought. Aya grew up in Karakura Town after her mother died giving birth to her, moving from foster home to the next. Almost all of her experiences were bad, the last one nearly ending with a rape. Ichigo, her best friend since they were ten, let her come live with him for a while after finding out. She now lives with Kisuke Urahara.

Personality: Aya is very determined. She never backs down from anything that she sets her mind to, and very protective over her friends because she has no living family. Aya sometimes blacks out when getting very angry and goes into rages. She's quick witted and always comes up with a good retort to anything, kind of like Uryuu, and is able to get them out of situations. She would lay her life on the line to save one of her friends.

Strengths: Confident, smart, friendly, gets along very well with her Zanpakuto.

Weaknesses: Refuses to let anyone help her most of the time, when men who are bigger and stronger than her come near, she freezes up in fear, which has gotten her hurt before.

Zanpakuto: Higure

Bankai: 'Let the darkness come, Higure!' It takes the form of a giant skeleton man, with the head of a demon bat and red eyes, while all the spirits of her enemies that he has captures and tortured visible in his frame. They're like tendrils of smoke, moving in and out of his body. Activating her zanpakuto summons the shadows, cloaking her and foes in a black veil that cannot be penetrated. It also summons demons in the form of smoke that can tear her foes into pieces.

Extra: Higure is in the form of a wraith like figure. He is a skeletal being, almost like a ghost, and wears a cloak like the reapers. He can control darkness and emotions such as anger, hate, and jealousy. Higure has a very close bond to Aya, and make people suffer then they hurt her, with or without her permission. Aya finds it ironic that her Zanpakuto spirit is a demon, since she is part angel. Higure is also close to Shuuhei's Zanpakuto, Kazeshinse.

Occupation/Job: She helps Urahara around the shop.

Looks: She has the body of a dancer, very curvy and a nice feminine figure. Her breasts are a bit on the large side, though not like Rangiku's. She has blue eyes and red-black hair, layered and reaching mid-back. Each layer is alerted between red and black, the top and bangs black, which is swept over the right eye.

Outfits: She is almost always wearing a tank top, shorts or cargo pants with converse. They are all either black or red most of the time, but she loves to wear blue too. Her Soul Reaper uniform is like Shuuhei's, and wears Higure on her back.

"Skeleton!" Yachiru's voice rang though the Eleventh Division. "Skeleton!"

"You need her for something, Yachiru?" The Lieutenant whirled around, smiling widely up at her Captain. The said girl was at his side, cocking her head.

"What is it, Yachiru?" she asked.

"Pineapple Head is looking for you!"

The girl's cheeks heated up. "What for?"

"I think you're going back to Karakura Town to visit Ichi!"

There as a group of them waiting at the gate to the World of the Living, Toushiro, Rangiku, Renji, Ikkaku, and Yumichika in total. "Aya!" Rangiku's voice sang, waving down the girl.

"What's going on?"

"We're heading to Karakura Town," Toshiro answered. "The Arrancar attacks have been growing, and we've been ordered as backup for Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends."

The gate opened just outside Urahara's Shop, the front door sliding open the minute they stepped out. "Aya, my darling!" Kisuke exclaimed in a flamboyant way, scooping up the girl. With fatherly affection he twirled the teen around, hugging her tightly.

"Boss! Put me down!"

"Ichigo has been so mean to me since you left, coming around and beating me up!" he continued to whine and complain, the Soul Reapers' watching in confusion and embarrassment at the grown man's display. Aya was growing redder by the second, trying to pull herself away from her boss, blushing at the awkward situation and in irritation. People were watching for crying out loud!

Renji strode up to the two, grabbing the girl by the back of the uniform and kicking the perverted old man away. "Oi, Urahara! Can't you tell she's embarrassed by you?"

"Renji, you moocher, you're so mean!" Kisuke complained, holding his bleeding nose.

"I'm not a moocher!" he yelled in annoyance, forgetting he was still holding up Aya.

"Er, Renji? Can you please put me down, cuz I would like to be touching the ground." Now it was the Lieutenant's turn to blush, putting the girl on her feet again, and looking off to the side.

"Are you three done?" Toshiro asked in irritation. "We have a job to do. Urahara, our gigais?"

"In the back. I kept them in good condition while you were away."

Both Tenth Division members disappeared into town in search of Orihime, claiming they would stay at her apartment for the time being. Meanwhile, Ikkaku and Yumichika went off on their own, saying they would be fine with or without a place to stay. After changing out of the uniform and into a tank top and cargo pants, Aya sat in the dining room with Ururu and Tessai.

"Oh great, the moocher is back," came Jinta's voice just outside the rice paper door. It was followed by a thunk and a yelp of surprise, the door opening and revealing an annoyed Renji.

"I take it you've found Jinta," Tessai merely stated.

"Little brat," the man grumbled, sitting down next to Aya and taking a sip of the placed out tea. "So is there anything you've learned about the recent Arrancar attacks?"

"They are very interested in humans with spiritual pressure. That much is certain when they attacked Karakura in the park a few days ago. Best to be careful now yourselves. You'll be they're next target if another wave comes."

"I think that's what we're hoping for," Aya spoke. "We want to find out as much as possible, so drawing them out is our goal."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The air was thick with pressure, making those who were sensitive to the feeling have difficulty breathing from the crushing force. Soul Reaper and Arrancar pressure fought against one another, growing in power as the minutes ticked by, the multiple battles taking place all over Karakura Town. Those who knew Bankai were forced to activate it, trying to keep up and match the power of their opponents. The Arrancars just threw them around like rag dolls, inflicting a lot of damage on them and the surrounding areas. Two of the enemy managed to be killed within the hour, lessening the difficulty to move about, but those still engaged did not let up, maxing their power.

"Bankai!"

The explosion of smoke obscured Aya's vision, the wind whipping about. Jinta stood by her side, watching the fight between Renji and the Arrancar, Yylfordt. The Lieutenant gritted his teeth, throwing forward his zanpakuto, the head of Hihio Zabimaru clashing with the enemy. However, the Arrancar halted and threw away the attack with ease. Yylfordt was in front of him now, zanpakuto coming down. It scrapped across metal, sparks flying from the harsh contact.

He was forced away, the startled Renji feeling his chest and finding no wounds. "Aya! What are you doing?" the man yelled, finding the girl in front of him.

"Saving your ass!" she answered.

"Is that it?" Yylfordt yelled. "That's the limit of your Bankai? A weakling such as you can pass as a Vice-Captain? And you hide behind a girl? Pathetic! You must be well acquainted with the bottom of the Gotei 13! Now let's finish this once and for all!"

Aya's eyes widened, watching as Ururu came up from behind the Arrancar. She attacked with such speed and force the enemy was thrown through the air. "What the hell?" Renji exclaimed, surprised by her sudden power.

"Who the hell are you?" Yylfordt snarled, his left eye having been brutally wounded from the kick. The child's hand wrapped around his neck tightly, slowly crushing it in her grasp.

"You are a danger to us," she whispered. "Danger are enemies. Enemies must be exterminated."

"Ururu!" Aya yelled.

"What's with this kid?" Renji asked.

"It's all this pressure from the Arrancars! It must be messing with her body!"

"You've seen this before?"

"Only once when there was a swarm of Hollows, but still it's nothing to be messed with!"

"You little bitch!" the man roared, attacking. The child dodged with ease, jumping back at a distance while he regained his breath. "I'll kill her... I'll kill her! Skewer her! Del Toro!" The pressure was massive, a smoke cloud covering his form.

The teen's eyes locked on something within, the black mass moving. "Ururu!" Aya yelled, lunging forward.

"Aya, no-!"

"Let the darkness come, Higure!" A giant skeleton man appeared, encasing the child's body, while Aya stood in front. A large bone protruded from the cover, smashing into the blade and pushing her back against Higure's hands.

"Aya!"

"I'm alright-!" Her throat tightened, watching as a monstrous form in the shape of a bull emerged from the white mass, eyes narrowed.

"What's with that look on your face?" Yylfordt questioned. "This is how we Arrancar release our zanpakutos!"

"Aya move!" her zanpakuto ordered, the other horn coming in from the side. The reaction was slow, but the girl managed to block the attack. She was thrown through the air, trying to catch herself and stand upright.

"No-!"

Everything seemed to stop. Shakily, Aya looked down, breath quivering. A horn had run her straight through the stomach, blood spewing from the mouth and wound. "Weak," Yylfordt stated, ripping himself out and allowing her body to drop head first towards the ground.

"AYA!" Renji and Higure roared.

The Lieutenant rushed in, scooping her up and landing on the rooftop to Urahara's Shop. "Jinta!" he yelled over to the kid. "Get her inside and grab Urahara and Tessai! Hurry!"

Yylfordt laughed sadistically above. "You're trying to save that weakling? Give it up! Those who cannot adapt and freeze up at the sight of their enemy are useless! The weak die and the strong prevail! That's how it always is and will be! She will die!"

Renji's zanpakuto locked with the man's bone armor. "Shut up! She's not weak!"

That only made him laugh more. "And I will make sure her soul goes to Hueco Mundo, where I will rip it apart once more-!"

Higure roared, eyes flaring, as demons in black smoke emitted from the sword's body moving through the sky. The zanpakuto went on a rampage.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The night was quiet, darkness entering every home. The hospital in the Soul Society was at rest from another long and stressful day, that evening having been particularly busy with a new patient. Eyes fluttered open, everything felt weird, body numb from the shoulders down. Focusing on the surroundings, Aya discovered she was in a hospital room. Her mind was groggy from the medicine pumping through her system thanks to the IVs hooked into an arm. Something was slumped over the edge of the bed, its form just visible thanks to the moonlight streaming through the window. She would recognize the hairstyle anywhere, surprised that they would even stay after hours. Weakly reaching up a hand, it stroked the top of his head softly.

A twinge of pain came from below the sheets, Aya's body tensing and pulling away. Reaching for the top of the covers, she pulled it up gently. The whole mid-section of her body was wrapped up tight, hiding the wounds below, but she remembered exactly what happened. This one was going to take a while to heal properly.

"You're alright."

Dropping the sheet, Aya glanced over, spotting her zanpakuto standing at the bedside. "Higure..." she whispered in relief. "What happened?"

"We slaughtered the Arrancar. I've locked his tortured soul into the darkest part of my body where the demons will feast slowly on him."

"You really went overboard."

"He threatened your soul. No one does that to my partner." Aya smiled lightly. Higure's red eyes turned on the sleeping man. "He was really worried about you and worked beside me."

"You never allow that..."

"He's different." The zanpakuto looked back at her. "He cares about you."

Though pale from blood loss, she could feel her cheeks heat. "Higure, I'm not sure..."

"I believe he's worthy of a chance."

"Coming from you that means a lot."

"What are you afraid of?"

"You know what." They were left thinking back to the many foster homes that had something to offer her and then she was greatly disappointed in the end. Growing close to someone was difficult.

"If he were to hurt you in any way I could easily add him to my collection. I think after the display in the World of the Living that was all he needed to see and know not to do anything to you." His skeleton hand reached forward, bone moving some stray strands of hair from her face. "I'll leave to let you sleep. Please release me into my other form."

"Higure disperse," Aya whispered, his form shimmering before disappearing in a wisp of smoke. The girl looked back over at the passed out Lieutenant, watching him carefully before moving her hand to grip the top of his own. It felt nice, holding his rough, strong hand in hers. Cracking a smile, Aya squeezed his hand before falling asleep once more.

Renji groaned, a crick in his neck and back from the odd position he had fallen asleep in. Looking up at Aya he found her still sleeping peacefully, and the girl's hand gripping his own. He was startled, wondering if she had accidentally done it in her sleep, but it was a nice feeling. The door to the room slipped open, drawing his attention. "Good morning, Lieutenant Abarai," Unohana greeted.

"Good morning, Captain," he answered, standing up.

"You're going to land yourself in a hospital bed if you don't take care of yourself properly. You've sustained your own wounds as well from that fight."

"I'll be fine."

The woman nodded, turning towards the patient in bed. "Oh, good morning, Aya."

The man's eyes widened, whirling around to find the teen's eyes cracked open, watching the two. "Morning," she croaked in a tired voice.

"A-Aya? How long have you been awake?"

"Since the Captain came in and last night for a little bit."

"Isane and I would like to check over your wounds. Renji, if you wouldn't mind, why don't you go get some breakfast?"

After grabbing something to calm his starving stomach, he sat back in the hospital hallway outside the door to Aya's room. Inside, both women cut away the bandages carefully, running their hands over the skin and mending the broken flesh. "Tessai did an amazing job at closing the serious wound so we could transport you here," Unohana relayed. "But it's still fresh so you'll have to be careful."

"Of course," she answered, trying to ignore the pain. "Where's Kenpachi?"

"The Captain was in such a rage that we had to sedate him."

Her eyes widened. "Seriously?"

"He was interfering with the other members who were trying to help you because he wanted answers. I had no choice."

"Has he woken up?"

"The Captain gave him enough to sedate an elephant," Isane answered nervously. "He won't be waking up for a while."

"Remind me to never make you angry, Captain," Aya said. The woman smiled in response.

When they were done with the examination and had wrapped the girl back up the two walked out. Neither were surprised to see Renji outside waiting. "You may go in and see her, but if you don't start getting some proper sleep I will make visits off limit."

"Yes, Captain," he answered with a bow before retreating back inside.

Aya was lying comfortably in bed, eyes moving over to look at the redhead. "Renji? Why are you still sticking around?"

"How are you doing?" he asked, avoiding the question.

"Okay, I guess. I mean, I basically have a hole running through me."

"Tessai and Orihime worked together to mend your organs so you didn't go into cardiac arrest. Though it was close... you almost lost your life."

"Have you seen Kenpachi?"

He chuckled, nodding his head. "It's been a while since I've been that terrified of him. And that zanpakuto of yours... I'm surprised I wasn't swallowed up like that Arrancar."

"Higure wouldn't have done that. He's very protective over me."

"That much was obvious. He nearly ripped the enemy in half. That reminds me... why didn't Higure disappear when you..."

"He has a will of his own. The only way for Higure to return to being a zanpakuto is if I release him from demon form. It can come in handy." He shifted between his feet, a conflicted expression on his face. "What else is bothering you?"

"Huh?"

"You look troubled. What's wrong?"

"Are you sure the medicine isn't playing with your mind?"

"I'm pretty sure, Renji," she giggled, trying not to move too much. Her brow twitched at the uncomfortable feeling in her gut, pushing it away.

"Are you alright?" he asked quickly, moving to her side.

"Fine. Just sucks that I can barely express my emotions without hurting myself."

"Do you need me to get the Captain?"

"Renji, I promise I'm fine, stop worrying. Just-"

His lips swiftly covered hers in a gentle kiss, careful of her wounds and taking her all in. The action left both breathless, the Lieutenant pulling away slowly. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "But this was the only... I wanted to do that a lot sooner, but the moment always seemed to slip away." He sighed heavily. "Don't do that ever again. That stunt... let's just say I nearly lost it." His large hand
