OC Profile:
Name: Kilo Hince; age 14; daughter of Hades
"AAAH!" I landed head-first into the lake, my canoe flipping right over and bopping me on my right-most temple. "MMPH!" I kicked my legs like a frog, emerging from the water like a flopping, dying fish, taking in huge breaths of fresh air.
Hold up, fish can breathe underwater. Scratch that, like a flopping, dying... demigod.
"Sometimes I wonder why you aren't a daughter of Poseidon." I grumbled something under my breath as I looked up to see my older half-brother, Nico di Angelo. He was sitting crisscross-applesauce on a nearby flat rock, seeming to be amused by watching my drenched form fumble to catch hold of my canoe. I could just barely see the tips of his mouth twitch, meaning that my stunt had to be quite hilarious to watch if another child of Hades was entertained.
I finally managed to get a slippery hand on the end of my canoe, and after grabbing the paddle, I started to swim back to the shore. My sticky-wet long black hair continued to torment me on the way back by getting in my eyes, making me slam my forehead into the canoe a couple times. When I got back to land, I splayed out my body like a starfish, letting the soothing sand get between my fingers and toes and thanking Poseidon profusely for not drowning me on the spot, though that had been the least of my concerns. Though in technicality, it should have been at the top of my list of need-to-worry-about things, with capital letters and bolded red letters with extra curves and arial font.
"Maybe you shouldn't have gone canoeing before having a lesson," Nico wondered aloud, looking up at the sky and shielding his eyes from the sun. "You could have asked Percy for help, too. He's just over there." He pointed to where Percy and Annabeth were simply letting their feet in the water and just lounging on the lakeside.
"I didn't want to interrupt their lovey-dovey time." I shot him a bright smile while wiping my sopping-wet hair out of my face. "But I'll always be willing to mess with you and Will. That's not stopping anytime soon."
He scowled, taking a quick glance to Percy and Annabeth. "Do you hear that?"
"Hear what?"
Faintly, I started to hear screeching from the nearby forests, like a flock of birds was trying to make a symphony of squawks. Nico's eyes narrowed, standing up and taking a fighting stance. I echoed his movement and swiped up my dagger from the sand in a swift motion.
The shrilling sounds got louder until a large flock of birds with feathers of every color of the rainbow flew up into the sky, their wing flaps synchronized as they soared over the lake, seeming like a blanket of color had covered us.
"Huh... what's that about?" I questioned as I took in the scenery, letting my shoulders relax. When I looked over at Nico, his form was still rigid and alert.
"Keep listening," he told me urgently, his dark brown eyes narrowed at the forest.
After the birds' squawking faded, there was rustling through the trees and bushes that made me jump and nearly drop my dagger. I shifted my grip anxiously, taking slim steps to put on my leather sandals.
Out of nowhere, a flash of orange passed mere inches from Nico. He jumped back, shouting, his expression confused and stunned. My eyes took it in as a slender tiger. It bolted past me and continued running down the shore to Percy and Annabeth who scrambled for their weapons.
"WAIT! Wait, that's Pickles! PICKLES! Don't kill her!" Dionysus screamed at us, running faster than I'd ever seen him run. His Hawaiian shirt swayed in the wind as he leaped forward and grasped the tiger's tail. "STOP PICKLES!!!"
"Why in the world did he name a tiger 'Pickles'?" I queried, scratching my forehead where a bruise from the canoe was forming. I winced slightly when a shot of pain was sent up my spine. "Pickles?"
Nico made a disgusted face that looked like he had shoved a full lemon in his mouth. "Seriously?"
"DIONYSUS WHAT THE HECK?!" Annabeth yelled at him at the top of her lungs as Dionysus tugged on the tiger's tail, barely holding it back. "Keep your pets in line!"
"Pickles is not my pet!" Dionysus huffed, his breathing starting to get slightly ragged. "Hades wanted a pet."
"Excuse me, what?" I shouted at him as I jogged down to them, making sure to keep a distance from Pickles the tiger. "Why would Dad want a tiger?"
"Better question, why would he want a pet in general?" Nico rolled his eyes as he caught up behind me. I nodded in agreement, making my best what-are-you-up-to face at Dionysus. He shrugged, nearly losing his grip on the tiger's furry tail.
"Even better question, why Pickles?" Percy asked, patting the tiger's head and nearly losing his hand when the tiger snapped at his fingers.
Annabeth crossed her arms over her chest, mumbling something along the lines of, "Of course he asked the stupid question." She brushed a strand of her curly blonde hair around her ear.
Percy replied saying, "It's a good question, Annabeth. Pickles. That has absolutely nothing to do with a tiger."
"If you must know, I got the idea from a TV show. Something about mermaids. Very peculiar," Dionysus scowled, his forehead beaded with sweat. Pickles the tiger finally seemed to get exhausted and laid down on the ground like a dog, its ears twitching ever so slightly.
"No, no, repeat why our dad wants a tiger as a pet," I demanded, stamping my foot on the ground and causing a small puff of sand. "Seriously."
"Hades simply just said to get something ferocious. I think Pickles fits that category after freaking out two children of Hades and a child of Poseidon," Dionysus said, hesitantly letting go of Pickles' tail and wiping the sweat off his forehead with a relieved sigh. Pickles closed his- or her- sparkling amber eyes with almost a smile on its face, mischievous and tiny.
"That doesn't answer why Hades wants a pet!" Annabeth exploded, grabbing Dionysus by the collar of his Hawaiian shirt and bringing him face-to-face with her. I inched away from them slowly, fearing what would happen if she really, really angered Dionysus. Nico looked just as wary, and Percy just ran his fingers through his hair, making the strands spike up. Annabeth's features were sharp with irritation, eyebrows raised and eyes narrowed, lips thin and her arms firm.
"Note to self. Never make Annabeth agitated," I whispered to Nico, who nodded in return and added out of the side of his mouth, "Don't make any god agitated either."
"Why is she that angry?" I quizzed him once we were a good three to five meters away. Annabeth started bickering with Dionysus, though the only words I really heard were, "WHY-", "DON'T DISRUPT OTHERS-", and "IDIOT-".
"Who knows. Maybe she was about to propose to Percy." Nico gave a grim smile that still looked shaken from the incident.
In a swift movement, Annabeth unsheathed her dagger at her side, got a good grip of it, and threw it straight at Nico's face. "That's not it, Death Breath!"
Nico barely and very narrowly avoided it by side-stepping and ducking, nearly crashing into me. "Okay, okay." His face was paler than usual, and that was saying something. I personally had thought it couldn't get any lighter. Annabeth blew out a miffed breath as she turned back to lecturing a worn-out and sweaty Dionysus.
"Bad idea, bro," I told him in a half-reprimanding half-amused tone. Nico was bent down, hands on his knees and panting slightly. "No jokes around Miss Annabeth here."
"I wasn't joking," Nico replied with a smile that almost resembled a dog wanting attention. I patted his head in return, making him swat my hand away.
"Heard that, Death Breath. Say something like that again and I won't intentionally miss." Annabeth finally let go of Dionysus, who practically collapsed on the ground, heaving deep breaths. He tried to stand up, pushing with his arms and fell back onto the sand. Nico looked at her wounded, seeming to be surprised that she had intentionally missed.
"Annabelle, if I had my way, you would be hanging from a tree ready to be murdered by leopards," Dionysus threatened, though it looked very un-menacing based on the fact that he was bone-weary and barely able to sit up.
"How about you don't do that and I count that as my favor from our last bet?" Annabeth petted Pickles on the head, and to everyone's surprise, the tiger simply shifted its position, moving its head so that her hand caressed its head. I gaped at the sight as it nuzzled its nose against her palm.
"Looks like you've established dominance over Pickles," Percy teased, and the glare Annabeth gave in return said, do you want to get judo-flipped? Her stormy-gray eyes were twinkling with a bit of mischief, though.
"Wait, Mr. Dionysus, is Pickles a girl or a boy?" I asked, making the abrupt decision to not help him stand up.
Dionysus looked pleased that I had added the 'Mr.' in his title when he answered, "She's a girl."
"Ah... I'm going to get to my canoe lesson then." I smiled a smile that I was afraid looked too fake, but Dionysus didn't say anything about it, instead just flopping back into the sand.
"You mean you're going to go drown?" Nico asked as I started walking away without even looking over his shoulder.
"No, it means that if you make me too mad, I'll drag you into my canoe and drown you myself."
"Noted."
