The following morning, Maya felt like she was carrying the weight of her sleepless night on her shoulders. She debated telling Aiden about what had happened, but she wasnโt sure how to explain it without sounding crazy.
When she met him at their favorite coffee shop before class, Aiden greeted her with a warm smile that immediately made her feel lighter.
โYou look tired,โ he said, pulling out a chair for her.
โI didnโt sleep much,โ Maya admitted, avoiding his eyes as she stirred her coffee.
Aiden leaned closer. โSomethingโs bothering you, isnโt it? You can tell me.โ
She hesitated, then sighed. โItโs that door. Last night, I...โ She trailed off, unsure how to put it into words.
Aiden frowned. โYou went back there, didnโt you?โ
Maya nodded. โThereโs something behind it, Aiden. I can feel it. I saw something moving, and... I heard a voice.โ
Aidenโs expression darkened. He reached across the table, taking her hand. โMaya, listen to me. I know itโs hard, but you need to let this go. Sometimes, things are better left alone.โ
His tone was serious, almost pleading. Maya stared at him, confused.
โDo you know something about the door?โ she asked.
Aiden froze, his grip on her hand tightening for a moment before he let go. โNo,โ he said quickly. Too quickly.
Mayaโs chest tightened. โAiden, if you know something, you have to tell me.โ
โI donโt,โ he insisted, his eyes darting away. โJust... promise me youโll stay away from it, okay?โ
Maya nodded reluctantly, but her curiosity burned brighter than ever.
---
That evening, Maya couldnโt stop thinking about Aidenโs reaction. He was hiding something; she was sure of it.
Determined to get answers, she decided to visit Dante. If anyone would take her seriously, it was him.
Danteโs apartment was cozy and cluttered, filled with sketchbooks, art supplies, and little trinkets heโd collected over the years. He opened the door, surprised to see her.
โMaya? Everything okay?โ
She nodded, stepping inside. โI need to talk to you about the door.โ
Danteโs expression grew serious. He gestured for her to sit, pulling up a chair beside her. โWhat happened?โ
She told him everythingโthe hum, the shadows, the voice. By the time she finished, Dante was frowning, his brows knitted together in thought.
โI knew there was something wrong with that door,โ he said finally. โI donโt know whatโs behind it, but... Iโve seen things, too.โ
Mayaโs heart skipped a beat. โWhat kind of things?โ
โShadows,โ Dante said. โLate at night, when I come back from the studio. They move in ways they shouldnโt, like theyโre alive. And the hum... Iโve heard it, too.โ
Maya shivered. โWhy havenโt you told anyone?โ
Dante looked at her, his eyes troubled. โBecause I didnโt think anyone would believe me. But now that youโve seen it too...โ
---
They decided to investigate together, but cautiously. That night, armed with a flashlight and a heavy sense of unease, they made their way to the door.
The hallway was eerily silent, the flickering lights casting long, distorted shadows. The hum was louder than ever, vibrating through their feet as they approached the door.
Dante crouched down, his flashlight illuminating the crack. โThereโs definitely something moving in there,โ he whispered.
Maya leaned closer, her heart pounding. This time, the shadow was clearerโa writhing, amorphous shape that seemed to pulse with malevolence.
Dante pulled back suddenly, his face pale. โWe shouldnโt be here.โ
Before Maya could respond, a low growl echoed from the crack, sending chills down her spine.
The door rattled, and the hum grew deafening. Maya grabbed Danteโs arm, pulling him back. โLetโs go,โ she said, her voice trembling.
They ran back to Danteโs apartment, slamming the door shut behind them.
---
โWhat is that thing?โ Maya asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Dante shook his head. โI donโt know. But whatever it is, itโs not just a random door. Thereโs something... unnatural about it.โ
Maya nodded, her mind racing. โWe need to figure this out. Maybe there are records about the building, or someone who knows its history.โ
Dante hesitated. โWhat if weโre better off not knowing?โ
Maya met his gaze, her determination unwavering. โI canโt just ignore this, Dante. Not when itโs right there, in front of us.โ
He sighed, nodding reluctantly. โAlright. But we have to be careful. Whateverโs behind that door... itโs dangerous.โ
Maya couldnโt argue with that. She had felt it in her bonesโthe door wasnโt just a mystery. It was a warning.
