I didn't understand. What's going on? Apollo hadn't explained yet and Will looked just as baffled as I was.
"Dad... where are you taking us?"
"To a room you've never been to before."
"What's in it?"
"You'll see."
It must've been the fifth time he said that and it was getting on my nerves. I wanted to know what was going on! What did my parents have to do with Will's mother? It made no sense....
Apollo led us deeper and deeper into the castle. We went down so many staircases I could count them and passed the dungeons. We kept going down. It was getting darker the farther we went so Will took out his phone and used the flashlight so we wouldn't trip on or run into something.
"Here." Apollo said, stopping. We arrived at a small wooden door that I don't think I'd ever been in, and by his expression, I didn't think Will had been in it either. I guess Apollo already told us that, so I shouldn't have been surprised.
He got out a key ring and opened the door with a bronze key. We stepped inside.
There was a large map on one side with red circles and X's scattered across the surface. Most of them were in Hadien but a few were in other kingdoms, too.
"Hadien and The Kingdom of the Sun have never got along well." Apollo started. "We've been constantly fighting practically since the beginning of time. (I'm realizing that this could be represented as the sun and moon... which is perfect for Hadien and The Kingdom of the Sun because Hadien is like the moon and The Sun Kingdom is the sun... okay keep reading now.) We are equal in power and never seem to be able to end the war between the kingdoms. But, your mother, Will, was trying to make peace with them. She was sailing across the sea to meet the When some of Hadien's ships took the entire ship taking her over captive."
I still didn't understand what this had to do with me.
"They didn't tell me it was them, but I know because of the letter. Actually, I didn't know for sure until Nico came and saw it. But when I first got the letter, I knew she had been kidnapped. I would do anything to get her back. Shortly after I received the letter, Hadien went into hiding. This only highered my suspicions of it being them. So I started this map you're looking at now. The circled places are those of which I think they could be and the X's mark places I checked and they weren't there."
I started to understand everything, like a puzzle that was quickly being put together.
"Now, the king and queen of Hadien had three children: Hazel, Bianca, and Nico."
Will's eyebrows shot up.
"And as you probably guessed, that was Nico di Angelo."
My heart started beating faster.
"I had to find the Hadien family, but I had to make it discreet. So I started bringing nekos here. Then I started searching the forest for the Hadien's. To my delight, I found them. But I only caught two of them. After I caught you and Bianca, I sent out a message to your father saying that I had you. I told him that he had to come to the castle with Naomi and we would trade. He never came."
He didn't want you... Will squeezed my hand.
"That one day that I brought Bianca out of the neko room? I didn't kill her. I was going to ask her what she knew about your parent's kingdom but she escaped. The guards killed her." His eyes started watering. "I never meant that... I just wanted to talk to her. I could only imagine what you thought I did to her and I felt guilty, but I couldn't do anything about it. I couldn't bring her back."
I clenched my fist. It's still his fault.
"And then one day Will ran away. Like I said, I had known Hera was going to try to take over this kingdom so I had to make myself look like I didn't care about it or anyone in it. Including you. But that was a mistake. You ran away and I had no idea where you were until Octavian told me you had ran into the forest and probably didn't have much food unless the neko you had with you caught you some. So I hurried down there and found you."
"I sentenced Nico to death but, of course, I wouldn't let that actually happen. If I had wanted him killed, I wouldn't have told you my plans and I would've killed him right away so you didn't have time to call it off. So Nico survived and I earned complete trust from Hera. So much trust that later, she told me to kill Nico. But instead I hid him in a cage and wouldn't let anyone find him. But well, I kind of got sick of her after a while and was able to get rid of her."
"Then I knew it would be my last chance to ask Nico about the symbol. So I did and his reaction... it told me I was right about Hadien. Nico, you're a prince and your father kidnapped my wife."
