Christine Saunders is ready for her next big story. She has to cover the Japanese occupation of China's then capital, Nanking, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. She needs resources, so she leaves Chicago and travels to China to dig up the facts. Christine finds artifacts, pictures, and information. But she also finds a link to a girl's story - someone she has never and will never meet. Hua Xing is just a little girl in China. She doesn't know why she's so poor, or why she always has an ache of hunger. She doesn't know what's happening to her country. Why are the Japanese invading? Hua struggles to make sense of Japanese-occupied Nanking, and little does she know, she's fighting to survive. As these two stories intertwine, it paints a picture of grief, cruelty, and hardship people endured during times of turmoil. And most importantly, it depicts hope and human kindness that always glimmers in the darkest of hours.…
