Why I Call Me Green

Why I Call Me Green

20 1 1

'Why I Call Me Green' is one of the first poems I ever wrote when I was around 12 or 13 years old in high school. I got the foundation of its inspiration as I was daydreaming out the living room window which I was sat by, whilst looking out at our back garden. I remember beginning to write about my dad, who has always taken care of the gardening in our home. So in summary, 'Why I Call Me Green' is about the graceful way in which my dad has raised me, similar to the way he raises his beloved plants - the way he taught me about my faith and reminding me to constantly be focusing, working and remaining patient towards what I want. So it's a thank you note to him in poem form for all that he has taught me to grow and be the independent girl I now am.…

My doll (poem)

My doll (poem)

My Doll aims to address some of the messages that are often being put out to girls my age in today's society!⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ To summarise, it is about the conformity and sacrifices that celebrity, and even just everyday females feel the need to make in order to be their own doll. Rather than simply saying don't have cosmetic surgery or change your hair colour, it's more specifically about the way we put ourselves out to be in order to please people. In this poem, a young girl has a nightmare about being pressured by a 'doll maker' (also society), to help her become almost perfect. She starts to think it's sinful of her to not be this way that everyone is, rather than it being the opposite case. As the ending nears, it's clear that the girl can not conform to fit the doll maker, who she even watches struggling with its own medicine at one point, so she allows her mother to 'wake her up' from her own nightmare. This is a slightly positive ending, but the girl is scarred by her visions. Essentially, I do think there are a lot of great leaders and role models out there for young girls today and even older ones, who embrace themselves and be rid of hatred towards the way they want to be. I'm glad to say I have many role models like this in my life, that let me embrace the way I was made. However, this poem is a sort of reminder, so that we don't forget what we learn and continue to be our own doll, whoever that may be, not in possession of anyone who can edit us or change the way we appear to be❤️…
